Why the hell do some people prance around acting like the Mayans were all knowing? Being able to predict a solar eclipse is totally different from predicting the end of the world.

All kinds of things, they're completely different groups of people. To give a big generalization though, Mayans were smarter, and Aztecs more militant and violent.

Best analogy I can think of is Greeks and Romans. Superficially similar, and share many things, but the closer you look the more different they are.

Many were, and the Spanish did a number on their culture, but as a people their ultimate fate was intermixing with the European settlers, and breeding into and being lost in the colonial society. Most Mexicans today have at least some Mayan or Aztec ancestry.

I personally think they were just calculating as far ahead as they could at the time. With their level of sophistication today they could probably calculate to 2400 or something.
