The other day my 6-year-old son (which means he was 2 when the movie came out) asked me what happened to the scene w/the getaway helicopter. So I had to explain not only that it was cut, but why.

You could have just told him it was only a preview and not supposed to be in the movie.

I try not to lie to him. Besides, he's old enough to look for trailers on a DVD.

Most likely, just shortly before 3 comes out. Not that that has a whole lot to do w/this thread.

It wouldn't really have been a lie though. Wasn't that scene not supposed to be in the movie? It was simply made for the trailer, you would have merely been omiting some information, not lying.

As far as I know it was meant to be used. The close-up of him w/the buildings reflected in his eyes was in the movie, so why wouldn't they have used the events leading up to it?

I think it was meant to be in the fil along with the first few thugs he stopped. remember the scene when the camera goes straight through his costume design drawing?

there!

I've never read or heard confirmation from Sam Raimi or the producers that the scene was supposed to be in the actual film. It doesn't seem to fit in the film, not the content, but the style of the robbery and web catch. It seems to be shot differently. It has such a different look and feeel that the actual film.

Also, why put that entire sequence in the film? If we already saw it, and know the surprise of the giant web, why show it again. They rarely if ever show an entire sequence in a trailer. It seems to me that it was made just for the trailer. They put the shot of Spider-Man from that trailer in the film simply because it was a short shot and it looked great. Ironically, even that shot looks somehow different from the rest of the film.

I'd like to see direct confirmation from someone involved in the film.

Raimi has said it time and time again in interviews that it wouldn't be in the film. It was strictly teaser material.

Be that as it may, my kid can look for bonus materials on a DVD, & I'm sure had 9/11 not happened, it would've been on there.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. The scene was never going to be in the movie. Sam Raimi himself said it was shot specifically for the teaser trailer.

it wouldn't have worked in the movie, it didn't have the same feel/approach.

It'll be interesting to see how kids who weren't born yet by Sep 11 (or were too young to know any different) view the significance of the day.

For the rest of us, the world changed from that day onwards, but for them, maybe it just annoys them that they can't get to see the first Spidey trailer!

Somebody famous once said (and Google doesn't help me find who): What adults view as change, children perceive as the norm.

I don't understand why this is 'messed up'.

So...what....you expected to have your son censored from the past events of the country that he lives in? He has a right to know, you know. Even if you want to protect him from certain depressing situations. You did the right thing. Don't feel bad.

I just hate that these types of issues come up at such an early age.

Odd to see this thread. We visited NYC recently and saw ground zero...upon returning home my daughter, who was 7 when the WTC trailer was first released, asked me about the "old video i had that showed Spidey's web strung up between the towers"...i tossed that video out when i upgraded all my stuff to dvd, so we down loaded it over at YouTube, and watched it together....

Chris is correct in that it's messed up that we are raising children in such an unstable world...

The world is great...it's some of the people that isn't.

Perhaps when the inevitable Deluxe Spider-Man Trilogy DVD set comes out someday Sony will finally include all this old stuff like the WTC trailer, the Alex Ross Spidey costume and the mechanical webshooter test footage.
