Guardians of the Galaxy This one needs her own thread - Pom Klementieff IS Mantis

Ok, fine, I guess I'll have to take my insectoid women fetish somewhere else. :o

I just hope they do a better job with her than they did with Gamora, which was probably the worst looking member of the team. Painted actors pretending to be aliens stopped being impressive quite some time ago.

On that subject I do hope they go bit more elaborate with the alien designs this time around, there was entirely too much painted humanoids in the first.

As for Mantis I would like insectoid eyes, although freaky, would definitely make her stand out.

I don't mind the painted humanoids because that's pretty much how they look in other media (the characters they used at least) and it gave it the retro space opera vibe they were clearly paying homage to.

I'm sure there will be some new visual treats in the sequel though.

I don't want it too complex. I prefer a simple paint job to something as busy as Mystique in the X-Men movies. But I prefer Mantis to have her human skin colour anyway, but just give her the antennae on her head. No bug eyes though. She'll stand out plenty in her grass skirt and gravity-defying bra.

I'm pretty sure there's no way they'll give her that costume, lol.

I know right? Having recently rewatched the movie I can say the problem stood out to me even more. I'm not asking for some ridiculously intricated make-up but come on.
On the other hand I also understand that there's only so much budget you can spend on make up so as long as they improve Gamora I'll be fine.

And yas to the creepy bug eyes for Mantis. There's nothing inherently "mantis-esque" about a pair of simple antennas.

Her classic bra can give her the preying mantis pincers.

I don't want creepy bug eyes. I always thought before that Mantis was sexy. I don't want someone who was sexy to now have the reputation of being repulsive.

Here's a pic of a girl sticking out her tongue at you for having the crazy idea her eyes are repulsive. :o

That's horrifying.

No bug eyes, please.

You know, green works really well actually. I've made my decision, she should have green bug eyes. Gunn, get on it.

Nice how the costume has the skirt look like Mantis's early appearances, and it looks like they found a way to look more alien and not overlap color palletes with Gamora.

From EW:

The answer is a brand-new character named Mantis, an acquaintance of the Guardians played by actress Pom Klementieff (Spike Lee’s Oldboy). “She has never really experienced social interaction,” says executive producer Jonathan Schwartz. “Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.”

Yeah, I'm glad she's not green but is, instead, closer to her original appearances.

I like how they went with a completely original costume, but still managed to incorporate the fringes into it. Maybe it's still too early to say this, but I think this new look could very well end up being my favorite one of hers.

Do I spot sexy black sclera? :woot:
Not sure they are completely black, but they certainly aren't regular human eyes either. But anyway, what matters here is that we were right. :o

Yeah. I'm glad she's not green. That would've been too much with Gamora. They look like they've compromised though and given her green hair. I wish her antennae were coming out of the top of her head instead of her forehead so that she could've retained her classic bangs.

They could've ditched the boots though to make her look more like her original appearance, and I do wish they gave her that pincer bra.

Speaking of bras, why is Starlord wearing one?

Starlord is wearing a jetpack. I like the way they're making Mantis look close to original look. Big thumbs up.

Not a fan of the eyes but love it otherwise. Like that they went with a more conservative take on her classic suit.

Love her eyes and happy she isn't green... I kind of wish they would have tweaked Gamora's look/color more.

Concept art isn't large enough to see, but she will also be sporting some small facial prosthetics, 3 under each eye, to give her a bit more of an insectoid look, in addition to the antennas that are visible. The antennas will be CG so will probably be able to move and be used for different expressions, during the b-roll footage Klementieff wasn't wearing any on her head IIRC.

From what we can see in this art, Mantis looks good. I'm also glad they're sticking close to her original look instead of her green-skinned look. Green skin would have made it hard to distinguish her from Gamora. I like what I'm seeing so far.

Mantis looks great, had a feeling they wouldn't make her green due to Gamora, but overall she looks awesome.
