Three cheers for retcons!

He really needs to stay dead too, his would be a most unwelcome return. I like that Catwoman can be a killer if you push her hard enough (and he did) and the best thing about Black Mask was his humour towards the end, but even that was just an element of the Joker inserted into what was alreay a weak mash-up of Two-Face and Penguin. His gimmick was all about masks. OOoooh. Like Batman wears a mask, we all wear masks, we're all so fake! Oh and his face is a skull! :wow:

It's like a fanfiction nightmare.

I him much better when it was a real mask he wore. At least that way it was left open so he could switch the type of mask depending on his mood or crime. But no they never went that way did they.

He was always a bit of a "poser" until right before WAR GAMES. Always. He tried to make himself worse than he was, to make himself more than he was, and he paid for it in the end.

Interesting interpretation of the character. I never thought of it that way before, but looking back, it certainly works.

"Leslie, Murderer" is symptomatic for modern comics. Those "writers" think that giving characters "flaws" makes them "realistic" and "relatable".

"The character's actions make sense! He is just so complex!"

Something that bothered me was that he became such a generic crimeboss near the end. Prior, he had been spiralling deeper and deeper into the Arkham-nutbag zone, especially in No Man's land, where his fixation with masks actually became religious. But, suddenly he pops back up and he's just... a meaner version of the Kingpin. Maybe I missed something, but it seemed odd.

Yeah that was one thing that made him a little distinctive and they should have ramped it up even. All the cult overtones. His hechman had scarred faces, he had spooky headquarters, the way he spoke. They could have made him living in a compound, sending out guys do do his deeds. Batman foils a robbery, ties up the guys and its all fairly routine; it's when he pulls of their balaclavas he becomes concerned, because they're all scarred and it means Sionis is up to something. The Black Mask would be a terror that's more remote and elusive.
