Calling Tim Story!
Please Upgrade Susan's Force-field Display!
There are three superheroines that have long reigned in my heart as personal faves for decades: Storm (of the X-Men), Wonder Woman and Invisible Woman. Of the three, I feel that the power displays of Invisible Woman are probably the most visually impressive. Why? Because one ever knows exactly what Susan's going to do next with her abilities. The creative range of her powers is nearly limitless.
Susan's brain cells produce psionic force that she can shape into relatively simple forms - such as rectangle planes, globes, cylinders, cones and domes. Also, she can mentally project protective fields that are highly resistant to concussive forces. And by projecting columns of psionic force beneath her, she can travel through the air. Technically speaking, she is undoubtedly the most powerful of the Fantastic Four, and a serious force to reckon with.
That said, one of the things that drew me to the Invisible Woman was the elegant look of her power displays. Since they are psionically-generated, the comics always portrayed beams of energy firing from her forehead. Often, this was depicted as a barrage of "bubbles"....
Or "force shards"....
...and of course, her trademark "slide"...
And these are the most primitive of shapes the Invisible Woman is capable of creating with her mind as both offensive and defensive weapons.
As the production works on the SFX for FF2, I'd like to see Mrs. Richards' power displays to be upgraded to something a little more elegant and interesting. To be bluntly honest, I've never cared for the first film's take on her forcefields. I realize they wanted to make it look more "organic" but in the end I felt it looked like...well, flying snot. For example, when Reed is examining her at the lab, she loses control and fires off a force field at him. The field had no form to it. It just looked like snot swirling through the air. Ugh.
For this sequel, it'd be great to see a departure from this Jello-Gelatin look in favor of something harder and glass-like. I realize that we may not get her "Invisible Slide" this go-round (as it would compete too much with the Silver Surfer's debut) but surely there are other things the production could do to make her force-field displays look...more interesting.
Finally, I really, REALLY think it's important to show the fields generating from Jessica's forehead instead of her whole body. This would reinforce the fact to the audience that her character's energies are mentally borne, not physically.
Does anyone else agree with this observation?
