To be honest... I was actually disappointed with Year one's ending!

Really I didnt. I mean, Batman wasnt even there (in costume), it was a brillent scene/panel with the dive, dont get me wrong i just dont think it worked well as the end of the novel, However I loved the Begins like finish with the Joker hint. Anyways I know alot of people wont agree with me on this, i was just wondering if anyone else agreed.

BTW for the record, I like Year One, this isnt a thread for bashing it, just discussing the ending.

i felt the same. like there were a few pages missing from the end of my tpb. it's cool when you look back on it tho, not so much problem the more you read it.

and it just goes to show YearOne is a story more about Gordon than Batman

It isn't more about Gordon.Stop the madness.:o

I agree too. Year One is awesome but the ending is weird. It shows Gordon waiting for Batman and it just ends like that. I was kinda 'huh? The end?' when I finished reading it. I was expecting Batman to show up

I have no problem with it. Although I will say, BB probably improved on it by having Batman present.

Well it left me wanting him to do year 2. Which he never did.

And no, ASBR doesn't count.

It was a perfect ending. It shouldn't have left you wanting more, because the story was over. As the story was about Batman's beginnings in Gotham, the perfect ending is anticipating his arrival for what is presumably the next story. He is present in that scene, even if he isn't physically there, because all of a sudden you get the feeling "Ah, this is something familiar. This is the beginning of another Batman comic. Of every damn story, every time he swings down onto that rooftop."

So that's why I like it. It reminds me, also, of Ricardo Montalban talking about his role in the Wrath of Khan. "I was disappointed because I didn't have as many lines as I would have liked. But then I realized, that when I wasn't on the screen, everybody was talking about me!". A character doesn't have to be physically in a scene to have an impact. That scene was about Batman: he was on his way, things were going to be just fine. I don't know how else to put it, the ending was perfect.

I'll admit, on an action standpoint, it's not really the most exciting, but the point of it was to show Gordon gain trust in Batman, and showing the first steps toward knocking the corrupt system of Gotham off.

Excellent analysis.Agree with you 110%.

On another note, I chatted with David Mazzuchelli at the NYCC a few weeks back - it's a shame he doesn't do any comission work.I totally understand why though.

I would love to see him do a Joker/Batman cover for Batman Year Two. Just a cover would be enough.

Im talking more about the dive to save Gordans baby as Bruce, that disappointed me, not the rooftop scene. But talk as you may.

Really? At the end of "Begins", did you expect the Joker to show up?
