Tom Hooper to direct movie of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats'

That definitely looks better JMC.

Tbh I dont know why they didnt just use practical costumes anyway?

The Jason Derulo one is truly terrifying.

I...im...what? Im slightly turned on by the female "cats" and idris elba cat...but mostly i find the stuff weird and somewhat disturbing.
What the hell is going on...i question a lot of things about myself and the world right now.XD XD

small fur like prosthetics are insane expensive. its different compared to planet of the apes 2001 where the have long hair and only skin around mouth. here with short fur over the whole face its very complicacated. the cgi looks more fake but its still cheaper. plus the bodies are stylized.

You could do some type of combination of both.

Yeah, see, the jmc version looks a LOT more like a cat. Nice job!

And yes, the problem is that they didn't change the human faces enough. There's some very subtle shading under the noses but they're still human shaped noses. And taking the human ears off just makes them look more weird. The cat ears are too small (OK, "nonexistent" wasn't the right word) and thus they don't balance out the face. Look at my cat avatar, the ears are pretty large in relation to the face.

They could have at least used the CGI to put that vertical line between the bottoms of the noses and the mouth like cats have. And flattened the noses and made the eyes larger. The aliens in Avatar looked far more like cats than the ones in this movie, they should have done something like that.

I wonder if they will delay the film and try to fix this mess?

There’s no fixing this.
It's already etched itself into internet folklore. :funny:
I’m curious what it means for the film though. It might be one of those dumpster fires that people go see for fun or “ironically” and ends up doing decent numbers. Or it might forever just be a meme

Not gonna lie, I had no idea Cats was being made into a movie, would have had no interest if I did, and yet there's some demented part of me that now feels I have too see just how awkward this movie is, lol.

I'm tellin' ya folks, go to YouTube and check out the clips from the 1998 filmed version of the stage show to see what the designs should have looked more like. It wouldn't have been that hard for them to go more in that direction.

Yeah this isn’t Sonic where it’s just one character. There’s no delaying this to fix the CGI.

It's been legit bugging me why this has looked awful.I don't think it's because the CGI is bad, it's that the characters look too human. If they had added cat prosthetics on their faces to be more catlike I don't think it would look nearly as creepy. I whipped up this concept and I think it looks way more acceptable.

Right. I mean, at the very least give them cat noses or something. Where it stands, this looks like some weird Cirque du Soleil version of Where the Wild Things Are.

Yeah I don't get why they havehuman nose and mouth and the whiskers are missing... Its a terrible design, really.

Its a shame as i want more high profiled musical being adapted into a movie ala Mamma Mia!/Hairspray/Les Miserables... but people are already reacting badly to it just because the cats design are hideous. I hope Universal is taking notes for Wicked.

I always thought that adapting Cats (essentially an anthology rather than a structured narrative) into a Hollywood movie was a bizarre choice... But the look of these abominations has truly tipped the scales from bizarre to horrifying.

That would have been fierce!

oh i didn't notice that they have whiskers.

Yeah I only watched the trailer because of the insane reaction and how much people were freaking out about it :hehe:

I mean watching it again the CG looks bettter on some than others, like the Taylor Swift cat and....shudder....the Rebel Wilson cat. I think they may still do slight tweaking if Hooper doesn't have some "don't **** with my current vision" thing going.

Did no one during filming say hey wait a minute this is all aittle too weird and creepy
Maybe we should not do this?

I find myself deeply conflicted on this. CATS is probably, like, my 2nd favorite musical (behind Phantom) since I was a kid... yes, I know the 'plot' is paper thin, but I've always loved the music and the choreography. I mean, the cast they got for this is frickin' insane...Idris, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson (enough that I'm willing to completely look over Taylor Swift being involved... sorry (but not really sorry), not a fan of her).

Part of me is curious to see how (if?) they've been able to flesh out the plot - looks like location isn't restricted to the junk yard like it is in the musical. It looks like Victoria has been given more of a role (seems like she's attending her first Jellicle Ball and so she becomes the eyes we see through?) Wonder if they'll merge her a bit with Jemima (who does bits of Memory in the stage production)

But the look of it... yeah... it's just so.............. bizarre.

I'll probably see it... whether I see it in the theater or wait for home release..... not sure at this point
