The Place Beyond The Pines

TPBTP is the first A film for me this year, I'm positive more will come (The Way Way Back, The Spectacular Now, The Kings Of Summer, Nebraska, and Inside Ilewyn Davis) but overall my palette has been not too bad but nothing outstanding so far.

Elysium
Oblivion

MOS/Elysium/Oblivion are all really good but all have a few missed chances; mainly to do with editing/plot/story from keeping them from being ace films.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part II

Furious 6
John Dies At The End
Evil Dead

Furious 6/JDATE/ED are really neat in their own way but not outstanding in any way beyond for niche reasons.

Star Trek Into Darkness
Iron Man III

Still good but also have more issues than the above films, not outright 6/10 yet but they're all low 7s. And, mostly rank lower than they should because they should have been better considering their franchise/production team/etc.

Don't not like any of these, but they're all merely serviceable. 42, is probably better than what I rank it but having no allegiance to MLB it doesn't hit at home too much... also, Warm Bodies is a neat zombie/teen movie for change.

I'm generally apprehensive about making a list this early, as there's still at least three movies I'm looking forward to seeing (the worlds end, Thor, and luc bessons the family) that I will most likely put on the list as well. 42 was on my list at some point, pretty standard as far as sports biopics go but the way they handled Jackie robinsons struggle got intense as hell and the performances were all fantastic. Especially the guy playing Robinson (the scene where he breaks down in hallway and destroys his his bat was chilling). Plus Alan tudyk is always awesome to watch lol.

^I'm pretty sure once I see Elysium this weekend, I will love it also. Been hearing a lot of great things about it. I can't wait. So, I would need to bump off one of the film from my list after this weekend.

I agree completely.

The script was pretty wholly standard. But the performances, the direction, how the script was brought to life was very high quality.

Here was my problem with STID;

By itself, it was great. Definitely.

But it ultimately reused several character arcs and general tropes from the first film, I couldn't help but feel like I was just watching an improved version of 2009 movie, and that hurt my enjoyment level quite a bit.

Plus, while I'm not a big Trekkie, I have to say that the one thing that made TOS truly special was that it always very philosophical. Every episode had some moral or quasi-sociopolitical point to make, and that was awesome. That's what science fiction is all about; offering basic wisdom through fantastic story elements.

Personally, I've found both of the new Star Trek movies to be totally devoid of even an attempt that offering wisdom to its viewers. Instead both films quite quickly and wholly degrade into nothing more than a juxtaposition of action scenes and obvious infatuation over the character of James T. Kirk.

I actually thought there was a fair bit of subtext in STID. Maybe it was just my reading of it, having seen it twice while in theaters. Maybe nothing specifically philosophical, but i enjoyed the analysis of morality and revenge, and I also interpreted a lot of the middle section of the film as a commentary on America's reaction to 9/11. Could just be me though.

No, I mean there's always subtext present. Especially when it comes to character arcs, the new Star Trek movies are loaded with undertones.

But like you yourself said, it's not at all the type of philosophical expression that was present in the various TV series.

I suppose, I'm not an avid Trekkie, my only exposure has been the first couple of movies with the original cast and the Abrams films. The only film I specifically remember being particularly thought provoking was the first with veger.

Oh no, the films have never been very heavy on the philosophical statements.

You gotta watch the series. TOS and TNG both did it very well.

TOS is cool now because it's so old, it's now hit it's sweet spot in terms of retro camp. But that might just be me being hipster-ish.
