Two-Face: Year One

I don't care what that guy says, the Long Halloween is better then 95% of all other comics i've ever read, and Ive read hundreds of trades.

"The Long Halloween" was the comic that converted me from Marvel to DC, and got me back into reading comics. I'll always have a place for it among my all-time faves.

Mark, looking forward to a good Harvey 2 parter. It's been a long time since we had a solid Two-Face book since Gotham Central.

And will you do this one thing for me...

Kick Dan in the nuts for not hiring Norm Breyfogle and / or reprinting his and Grant's wonderfull stories?

Please mods don't ban me because of this, it's all in good fun. :oldrazz:

I hate how trendy it's become to crap on "The Long Halloween". But I've noticed that a lot in the comics, that when a story gets too "mainstream" and popular with the unwashed masses, a lot of elitists will start looking down their nose at it and picking holes in it. It's pretty much one step away from the uber-elitists who just utterly reject Batman, Spider-Man, Superman et. al because of their popularity, and will endlessly proclaim the superiority of their obscure favourites.

That said, I agree with the guy's praise of "Eye of the Beholder". Just a stunning, underrated story. And while there's elements I don't like ([BLACKOUT]Harvey being a killer before becoming Two-Face[/BLACKOUT]) the characterisation of Dent is handled excellently.

I think much of it is because the more people talk about Long Halloween and the more hype it gets, especially surrounding TDK, then the people who weren't so impressed feel more inclined to speak up. Going mainstream simply means it discussed more often and the opinions are gonna come out. I was never very impressed with Long Halloween but I don't make a big deal about it unless the convo's already happening. It's not so much a matter of sniping as it is pointing out to new readers that TLH is not exactly the gold standard of Batman comics, as many new readers seem to think it is, which is an easy cocnculsion to come to I think especially on initial appearances.

You'd actually be surprised how much the current Miller-hate has led to people crapping on "Year One" and "The Dark Knight Returns" as well.

I don't care what anyone says about Miller. Year One is as flawless a Batman comic as you can ask for and the impact DKR had on the medium--especially Batman comics--is unprecendented. For better or worse, Miller changed Batman forever and DKR is a marvel of comic storytelling.

IMO, grim and gritty has gone too far (especially with Morrison's stuff), but I wouldn't sacrifice the current state of comics for the existence of DKR. I love it that much. <3 Miller XOXO

Word I love those two stories like they were my own children especially Y1 and that's about as popular outside of the comic fanbase as you'd get with modern Batman comics. I've had problems with TLH since it first came out back when I was still in high school. I just don't think it's all that great at all I don't think it's horrendous either but it just doesn't resonate with me in no way like other Batman stories have.

Don't get me wrong. TLH had an excellent premise and plot, but the execution was all wrong, especially dialogue wise. I know, it's a matter of opinion and it shouldn't affect me at all, but I just don't see how TLH can be defined as the greatest Batman story of all time, which is how it's constantly being praised.

I'm glad you feel that way. If you love it that much, no one's opinion should change your thoughts about the book.

Get out of my head, pls. kthxbi.

Back to Two-Face Year One please.

I really can't wait for this. Two-Face is my favorite Batman villain ever and I don't care if it's an origin rehash (though I think this will definitely be a unique twist to that), I'll be getting it.

Mark Sable said he originally wanted to use Rachel Dawes, I wonder if an analogue didn't end up in the story instead. It might be interesting to see where she would have fit in

you mean you didn't like the long halloween. as i said in my last quote i thought it was good, but specifically i liked how it had this mystery story and showed batman as the detective which is really what dc comics are all about. i mean doesn't dc stand for detective comics? i didn't mean to go off my posts topic there. anyways all im saying is that this story was pretty good imo and im a little surprised that someone doesn't like it.
Nope I didn't like it. I think there is more to being a detective than sitting in the batcave a saying "Who is Holiday?". The Two-Face/Dent part of it was ok but I think the mystery was a joke. I know most of the people on here love it but I don't. Very lazy storytelling on Loeb's part.

AHAHAHAHA.

I loved it. After meeting Mark Sable and chatting a bit with him in person and online, I knew Two-Face would be in good hands and he surely did not disappoint. Everything was well-written and I loved seeing the nods to the Long Halloween. This book surely does not step over the feet of Loeb and Sale's great story but develops more on it as it shows stuff happening behind the scenes and fleshing out some characters such as Varnon.

I also loved that Sable touched on the friendship between Bruce and Harvey as I always loved that about the animated series, but the comics never seem to show that the two were pretty close friends. It was usually Batman and Harvey being friends but more as working together rather than on a personal friend type level. Just something I always liked, although I do like the aspect friendship of Batman and Harvey. But anywho, this book has certainly made me, a big Two-Face fan, rather happy.

I just downloaded this and I'm definitely gonna buy it, books like this and their artists need to be supported. I found this very engaging from beginning to end. I like the characters and the way Sable does scene shifts and moves the story quickly ahead. He's has done a great job of juggling elements from Year One, Long Halloween and a nice amount of Gotham Central which is a cool surprise right there; even though Sable did mention Greg Rucka when he came onto the board I didn't expect to see Sawyer, Bullock and Cohen (!!! what a badarse ha ha). This is almost like a Year One of the Gotham MCU as well. And it's a great companion to TDK, I would probably recommend this to new comic readers who liked the movie.

To be fair I don't the think the lead-up to the scaring, and the event itself, is portrayed as potently as in TLH. But then again that is THE best part of a highly over-rated book imo, so Two-Face:YO doesn't lose too many points for failing to match that aspect.

I also wish Sable hadn't tried to retcon Two-Face's execution of Maroni. It should have been easy enough to re-tell or build the story around the way it happened in TLH, because the version in YO is not going to stick, and it's not nearly as memorable or descriptive.

Bring on next issue, I'm really looking forward to see how he does Two-Face and the campaign against Mort should be amusing

.

Yup great book, loved the nods it gave to TLH and Year One. Can't wait for the second book.

I thought this was going to be terrible but I picked up anyway and I enjoyed it. It wan't a complete copy off of TLH which was cool and introduces a few new characters. 7/10
