But I really don't see these hot new writers hopping on board for Ultimate Marvel.

Hickman is taggling on Ultimate Thor, and who knows what else they got in store? Patiance is virtue.

Why work on Ultimate Iron Man, Ultimate Thor, and Ultimate X-Men when Fraction is working with the real versions of those characters?

Creative freedom. Frank Cho for example loves Ultimate Captain America for being a Badass Soldier, so he & Loeb worked out in New Ultimates to get a shot of Steve using some rifles and whatnot.

As for Spider-Man, what Marvel needs to do is if they're going to release a $3.99 book, they should release it only once a month, not two or three times a month and milk its readers dry of cash. A book that comes out twice or more a month needs to be at $2.99 because most people just cannot afford to keep up otherwise.

I think the same could be said to Ultimate Marvel. All the titles are 3.99 now and some are trade waiting for stuff. Millar's Avengers works perfectly for Trade format since hes having different artists for every 6 issue. Sadly ofcourse Pachero got sick, so Avengers 1 had alot of delays, but we're geting some bimonthly Ult Avengers now thanks to Leinil & Dillon. :)
From what I've read of Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man and Ultimate Comics: X, you definitely need to know that events from the previous Ultimate line happened.

Ultimatum is perfectly explained for what it was and what it did. The stories pick out from that where Parker is now dating Gwen, and then thruouth the story we meet Iceman, Human Torch and whatnot whatnot. Really you can count on Bendis' that he made the series very new friendly. All the villains so far have been brand new in Spider-Man aswell. Ultimate X also pretty much tells what happened in Ultimatum, and pretty much starts out by telling that Mutants need to register or theyre hunted down and murdered.
But the sales numbers are going down as well. Ultimate Comics: Avengers started at 99K and it is now below 50K with the most recent issue.

Like i said. June was a really tough month, but even still you can't be trying to tell me a brand needs refreshing for being on top 1-50 every month. Yeah you can always tell me about how Ultimates used to be the hottest selling thing, but these things happen. It's like Batman. What happens when Morrison leaves? How will it effect the sales? Do we need to rebrand Batman & Robin once the sales start dropping and people start to read Batman Inc?

Obviously not everyone is going to like the Ultimate brand. Just look around here, right?

But people are complaining about getting two issues of Ultimate Avengers a month right now? Really? It's not like it's some morally-unjust move on Marvel's part. They're not selling us one page at a time for $3.99 across the majority of the month.

Of course it's business-driven. They lost sales while Pacheco was delayed, at a time where Leinil had already finished art duties, and since everything's in the bag, why not release it faster and recoup the loss during the sales year?

All that equals on our end, though, is more reading and faster story. Sounds like a win-win to me. I don't see why a reader of the series would complain about that, one, and people who aren't readers of the series really have no point complaining about it, I'd think.

Alot of people here just dislike Ultimate Marvel for... You know, i don't even know. It's likely because it's a popular, succesful, well written elseworld that just happened to have 1 major bad event, mediocore X-Men run, and an insulting Ultimates run. That doesn't mean Ultimate Marvel sucks, it's been OVER ayear since Ultimatum, and Ultimate Marvel is great. Yeah 3.99 price and Loeb might have scared some readers, but those who are sticking are enjoying the ride alot.

But yeah Bastard, you'll see alot of immature Ultimate Marvel hate here, just be lucky that Corpulent isn't in this thread! He'd cry and whine so much, i'd give us cancer! :awesome: :p

The problem with Ultimate Marvel is that it isn't marketed like it used to be. 5 years ago, the Ultimate books were THE books to read, but then Marvel got its act together in the 616 universe and paid more attention to the 616 rather than the Ultimate. Now with all the publicity that the 616 universe is getting from Civil War, Death of captain america, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign etc. etc., Marvel just isn't putting alot of effort towards the Ult. universe anymore and is pretty much letting Millar and Bendis do what they want with it.

Unfortunately as soon as Ultimate Spiderman starts to drop below average sales levels, the Ult line will probably canceled. But that probably wont be for a few years.

I'm a fan of Ultimate Marvel, but I wouldn't call it great.

And I think it's hard to say that Marvel isn't behind it like it used to be, or isn't behind it at all. It's still Bendis and Millar masterminding a lot of it, only now Loeb's attached as well. Has Marvel gotten its act together regarding mainstream continuity? Yes, apparently so. Does that mean Marvel doesn't care about its Ultimate brand? I don't see how you can make that jump in reasoning, but hey, more power to you.

Rather, the Ultimate brand has simply lost its novelty. When it launched, it was the new thing. They promised new stories instead of rehashing old stories. They promised a modern take on characters. They delivered that. As time goes by, though, that novelty fades away. It's the same with anything else, unless they can keep spinning things a new way and keep people excited. That's where the Ultimate brand failed. Maybe that's a lack of effort on Marvel's part, and maybe that's just a matter of bad judgment and premises gone awry. One would be hard-pressed to prove either, short of a quote from Quesada himself.

I read New Ultimates and I think it's pretty piss-poor. We'll see how it goes when Loeb leaves the book. I also read Ultimate Avengers, and even if it's not high-art, it's certainly not bad, and it has the benefit of being fun to read. And that's that.

Hickman is taggling on Ultimate Thor, and who knows what else they got in store? Patiance is virtue.

Creative freedom. Frank Cho for example loves Ultimate Captain America for being a Badass Soldier, so he & Loeb worked out in New Ultimates to get a shot of Steve using some rifles and whatnot.
But there really isn't creative freedom anymore when you have 10 years of stories that you have to factor in. With Ultimate Comics: Thor, Hickman is going to have to make sure that his Ultimate Thor doesn't contradict the Ultimate Thor already presented.

Also, Ultimate Cap sucks. He just flat out sucks.

I agree, I think that the $3.99 price point and trade waiting is hurting the Ultimate line. Trade waiting is why I think that Ultimate Marvel would do better as a series of twice or thrice a year OGNs. I remember reading Ultimate Spider-Man in trade.

Ultimatum is perfectly explained for what it was and what it did. The stories pick out from that where Parker is now dating Gwen, and then thruouth the story we meet Iceman, Human Torch and whatnot whatnot. So overall, you still need to know that previous stuff did occur.

I think that Batman & Robin and a lot of the Batbooks are going to get canceled once Batman Inc. is done. In order for an effective rebranding once Morrison leaves, Batman needs to have fewer Batman books.

But for the time being, I think that Batman & Robin under Peter Tomasi is safe as long as it stars Dick Grayson as Batman. Batman: Dark Knight will be starring Bruce Wayne and it looks like Bruce will also be taking over Batman and Detective Comics as well.

Do you really think that there are going to be multiple Batmen once the Batman, Inc. concept is done with. Now it makes somewhat sense for there to be so many Batman books because there will be more than one Batman. But when you only have one Batman again, you can't have six Batman books.

Wait and see really.

It's a prequel, he's only forced to have Thor have the Ultimates costume, thats about it. Thor isn't going to be a hippie or anything.
Also, Ultimate Cap sucks. He just flat out sucks.

Nah. Steve Rogers in mainstream Marvel is flatout boring political scout. Millar gave him a badass edge and made him a true soldier. It's like what Brubaker did by making Bucky a Captain America. Making a real badass soldier into the true Captain America. Not some granpa who doesn't dare to give a good spanking. :p

Nope. These story arcs are perfectly free of that, the only thing you did need to know was explained in #1. This is like trying to claim Batman fans need to read Final Crisis before RoBW, While ROBW perfectly explains what happened.

Also did anyone read Ultimate Mystery #1? It was all dialogue driven, but it was Bendis' being hilarious as hell. :D Great stuff. :)

Anyone else hoping Ultimate Comics Avengers 2 doesn't end so deux ex machina as the last one?

Millar is like the kid who waits til the last second to write a term paper. For the most part, the whole thing is great until the conclusion where he blows it, leaving a lot to be desired and explained while also being extrememly rushed.

If he just started the conclusion of his stories in the second to last issue, he'd have plenty of time to end the arcs properly.

What was wrong with the ending of Ultimate Avengers 1?

Apparently I don't remember it.

[blackout]Red Skull is kicking the Avengers collective asses. Cap crashes a jet onto Red Skull. The End.[/blackout]

^That pretty much sums it up.

It's probably the big build up (and delays) between Captain America vs. Red Skull. Tho i just simply loved the dialogue. Noone else can write as amazing Captain America as Millar, Steve just giving few words to his own son was just pitch perfect, but what really nailed the issue was the twist with Nick Fury. I wonder will Millar get allowed to have Obama stand in awe for Fury, now that Fury is an outright villain or will Marvel show some balls?

Ultimate Avengers 2 #6 preview coming this week!

I really hope we can see some more Tyrone Cash. :) Also Ultimate Avengers 3 #1 comes out August 11th! With Steve Dillon as the artist. :) Here's October Solicitations aswell:

[blackout]Red Skull is kicking the Avengers collective asses. Cap crashes a jet onto Red Skull. The End.[/blackout]

^That pretty much sums it up.
There's nothing actually wrong with that, though, speaking of narrative.

It may not be subtle or gentle, but I will remind you all that this is Millar writing it, and we all know that going in.

No, it's the fact that
Skull is literally WRECKING the avengers, who were pretty powerful to boot, and then Cap shows up - and Skull's "daddy issues" cause him to, all of a sudden, stop fighting so Cap can take the opportunity to beat him. That's sloppy to me, especially because of the way Cap killed Skull. You don't just stop fighting when a friggin' plane is coming toward you.

Still tryin to figure that out. It feels like I just dropped off the planet for a little while. :word:

Hicman Interview on Ultimate Thor

Nothing much new but how it's new reader friendly material, covers Ragnarok and Balder, Loki and Thor's younger days. Conclusion is about Thor's rebirth as a man (Ultimates 1).

Ah, fudgit, I'll stick it in a spoiler tag.
I would agree that this were a problem with the narrative, except that Millar had been setting that up through the portions of the issues concening themselves with Red Skull. He all but had Nick Fury spell out (actually, he may have actually spelled it out, come to think of it, but this is just me making an English pun, I suppose) that the only reason Red Skull was doing what he was doing was because his father was Captain America. Teenage-angst-rebellion was the entire premise of Utimate Red Skull. In other words, it was quite set up that per the inevitable moment when Cap made it back on the scene, his angsty and rebelling son would be sucker-punched, especially after having thought he'd one-upped daddy. It's pretty cliche, actually, but the truth about cliches is they're usually narratively-sound and work.

It's there in the narrative. You don't have to like it, but it doesn't make it incorrect, wrong, or a deus ex machina. People should not throw that term around when it isn't actually the case.

I know what the term deux ex machina means, and I did not use it improperly. It could be used for two reasons, really, in this arc.

One, Cap goes rogue and is off the grid until it's time to come find Red Skull so he hijacks the teleporter plane that was (I'm almost sure) just introduced. That's something out of the ordinary coming to the hero's aid exactly when he needs it.

Two: Red Skull did have daddy issues, and I get that - I'm fine with it, as well. But when a plane is coming toward you, there's no way a you'd just stand there - especially with a cosmic cube that does whatever you want. Not to mention the fact that skull had his defenses up prior to Cap's arrival (due to the cube's infinite power), because of his fight with the avengers. He just suddenly drops his guard at the sound of his dad's voice so that a huge fighter jet can stab him dead in the chest with a small spike at the front mere inches wide.

Of course, I could be criticized for being dissapointed with that idea because it's too fantastic, and this is comics we are talking about. But my main problem was that Millar builds up this epic encounter, and ends it as soon as it begins with a plane in his chest. I would've preferred if Cap and Skull fought, like the cover of the issue implied (though covers are never reliable and I NEVER go by them, anyway). And, personally, I feel if Millar had given himself some more space to work with, he could've done a duel that lasted at least two pages, with Cap still winning with a sucker punch.

My whole point, which I feel we've stayed from, is that Millar's ending seemed rushed and wrapped up so fast it was an after thought so that he could end this story and move onto the next. It's not the first time he's done this - I'll cite civil war's ending where he contradicts the whole premise with the conclusion.

I like Millar, and he's one of my favorite writers - but I still stick to my opinion that he wraps up his stories (sometimes) too fast, and in a dissapointing fashion.
