Are they any good?

I've just finished reading Ultimates 1 & 2 and overall I thought they were outstanding. Sure it had a little of the Mark Millar "everything to the extreme" cheese that he's known for, but it overall it was an excellent story that seemed to be rather rooted in reality for the majority of the read.

It seems that most people agree with me (based on what I've read online) about Ultimates 1 & 2. However, based on what I've seen written about Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum it seems that they are nearly universally hated.

I am interested in picking up U3 and Ultimatum, but not if they are pure garbage. So do any of you recommend either of these two? Or should I wait for Millar's return with "Ultimate Avengers"?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Well... Ultimates 3 is really bad. And this is coming from a fan who always tries to look for the positive and bash as little as often. I'm also a huge fan of Loeb's earlier work, and I just don't know what he thought he was doing with Ultimates 3, it was ridiculously awful. Especially the dialogue.

Now, Ultimatum is only in it's second issue but so far it seems to be going the same direction as Ultimates 3. With even more horrible shocker moments and surprise deaths. However so much death and devastation has happened within Ultimatum, that I feel (and hope) that it's got to have a point of some kind. They have to be going somewhere with all the characters that have been killed off. If they don't then it'll have just been another sensationalistic, world-shaker story designed to boost sales and or thin out the population.

In conclusion, Ultimates 3 sucked don't waste your time. Ultimatum you may want to wait for the end to hear if it worked out, then maybe read it. But overall you should probably just wait for Millar to return. (And I don't even like him that much. Use to prefer Loeb over him big time but not so much anymore.)

Ultimates 3 just completely ruined the Ultimates and I loved the first two volumes. There were just a bunch of changes without any explanation to them.

Ultimatum and Ultimates 3 wouldnt be nearly as bad if Loeb had simply kept everybody in character. Loeb took Millar's characters and completely changed them around for no rhyme or reason. Hawkeye for example was one of the coolest characters in Ultimates 1&2, in Ultimates 3 Loeb ignored all of his character progress and turned him into a psychopathic ass. Thats just one example. Don't waste your time bro, hopefully Millar can redeem Loeb through Ultimate Avengers.

Ultimates 3 is hilarious. Like a 14 year old read Millar's Ultimates and some Frank Miller stuff and decided "Wow, this is how it should be done!" completely missing their points. Lovely moments like CanniBlob and "I guess this makes me the mother****er" seriously make me think a child have wrote it trying to be like the cool guys. I for one always hated Loeb (before it was cool) but If you've enjoyed other writers destroy themselves (see All star Batman and Robin, the finest read there is) download or borrow it for the spectacle. Also MAD is a pretty good artist, but a total mismatch for the title. His stuff jumps from the paper though.

Yeah, if you liked Ultimates 1 and 2 you'll HATE Ultimates 3.

That was pretty conclusive, lol. I guess I'll just wait for the trades of Ultimate Avengers. I really did enjoy Ultimates 1 & 2 though.

Yeah, Millar and Hitch kicked ass on that. I look forward to his Ultimate Avengers stuff as well.

Yeah Ultimates 3 Has been rather lack luster. Art is nice, but the writing isn't worth the paper it is on. Ultimatum is along those same lines. The Ultimate Avengers though, that should be good.

I just finished the trades for 1 and I'm going to move on to 2 next. I read the first issue of 3 at a friends house and it was total garbage.

Ultimates 3 has IMO great art..I like Joe Mad and this influenced my not being as Irate at some of the stuff others had a problem with.

Thing is I totally agree that U3 basically ****s on what the ultimate universe had been ..its basically 616 lite in U3, rather inexplicably.

Ultimatum is shaping up to be a real stinker. Loeb doesnt have Joe mad's art to fall back on with me so I've really noticed what people were complaining about.

Overrall the work seems rushed , out of continuity and lame.

You'll really like 2. I just finished it. Thor has a terrific character arc that helps explain some of the seemingly annoying aspects of his character in Ultimates 1. Ultimates 1 & 2 flow nicely together. It's a shame that apparently 3 falls apart.

Yeah Ultimates 1 & @ are great. But I wouldn't continue onto 3 though. It really isn't worth reading. Unless you like good art, then 3 deserves a flip through.

Sorry if this is an old thread bui just read ultimate 1 and 2, in the end of 2 when the ultimates decide to work on their oun it seemed like they were going to become The Avengers and drop their Ultimates name, is that even used for Ultimates 3?
