The Official Dark Avengers Thread

"What If Cap Lived and Fought Against the Skrulls??!!"

:whatever:

This is a good night to be me. Another Marvel writer affirming what I've said before, this time about Dark Reign:

Bendis said:
Dark Reign is not another event I'm writing. It's like the Initiative label that a lot of books had after Civil War, which announced it was about this part of the Marvel Universe. That's what Dark Reign is going to be. So I want to make that very clear.

I'd be okay with Marvel doing a sort of legacy thing with Captain America and Iron Man.

In fact, I'm enjoying Bucky as Captain America way more than I thought I would. So much to the point I don't even care if Steve doesn't come back.

http://www.toplessrobot.com/2008/09/mark_millar_returns_to_the_ultimates.php

Confession time: the only superhero comics I have actually bought in the last five years are Mark Millar's two Ultimates series. I think they're swell, and when he left, so did I. Comic Book Resources has some good news for me, at least, by reporting that Millar is returning to the Ultimate Marvel universe with a new Avengers-centric plan that sounds mighty swell as well. Millar will be writing a new series called Ultimate Avengers (now that the Ultimates have separated from Nick Fury and SHIELD), which will be monthly, but really be two 6-issue series a year, each focusing on one massive super-brawl.
Millar revealed the first act of "Ultimate Avengers" features all of the Ultimates, all of the Fantastic Four and some of the Ultimate X-Men. "And there's a small appearance by Ultimate Spider-Man," Millar revealed. "The first [arc] is a huge one. It's got everybody. And Kang is the villain. And Red Skull is in there, as well. It's great getting to apply the same hand as I did in putting the Ultimates together.
...
The second "Ultimate Avengers" storyline delves into material from the first volume of "The Ultimates," in which Hawkeye and Black Widow were seen working for a black ops team called Ultimates Black. "We've got Nick Fury assembling a dirty tricks team really and we see there is a dark side to Ultimate universe," Millar explained. "You've got a team comprised of The Punisher, War Machine and an African-American Hulk character that I have created. And it's also tied into the origin of Hawkeye. We have seen the origin of Thor and Captain America and so on in 'The Ultimates' but we never really saw where Hawkeye came from. It's quite a shocking setup I've been building up to through the first two books of 'The Utimates.'"
Those are the two most revealing paragraphs from the lengthy article over at CBR, which is worth reading if you want more general Millar info, although Millar does also say the second Ultimate avengers will also feature Ultimate Ghost Rider, Blade and Punisher. It's also worth noting that Ultimate Hawkeye was a stone-cold mother****ing killer and totally awesome, so I'm pretty tingly to get to learn more about him.
I know some folks have their issues with Millar and his writing (or at least his personality), but I have to admit I absolutely love his original Ultimates comics. Looks like I'll have a few more comics to buy this decade after all.

Sounds awesome! :D Anything will be better than the mess Jeph Loeb had made of Vol 3.

How the heck will the FF fit in all this? Splintered? A unit? I'm curious. Of course Thing and Thor are always a hoot together and POWERFUL. Torch and Spidey are screaming to be a team.

:ff: :ff: :ff:

ultimate avengers is sounding better and better.

An african american Hulk.....will he at least be green? Or will "Bruce Banner" be black? If so, with the temper some bruthas I know, he'll be in Hulk form more than he will be in human form.

Bruce banner already exists in the Ultimate MU so I doubt that they'll just suddenly blacken him. It'll be a new character.

Well I kind of figured that when he said it would be a character he created, hence my quotations around Bruce Banner. Thanks anyway, it means you are thinking, I like that.

Mike Deodato put this in a blog...

Pretty funny stuff!

I don't. :o

That's entirely possible and even likely, too. In one of the recent MA issues it showed Sentry's wife get attacked and the Void (it was basically a blacked-out version of the Sentry) came and saved her and said that he would help since the Sentry couldn't.

After Secret Invasion I think Iron Man should fire Sentry like when Weatherman fired Union from Stormwatch years ago.

- Ultimate X-Men will be canceled with issue #100, Ultimate Fantastic Four will be canceled with issue #60

- Marvel is moving forward with The Ultimates 4 with Jeph Loeb and Frank Cho. It will be picking up from the events of The Ultimates 3.

- Ultimate Spider-Man is continuing with Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen still at the helm.

- Mark Millar has finished the scripts for Ultimate Avengers #7-9. However he's not done with issues #1-6. There will be a new Black Widow and the first Hulk.

I've actually read him in an interview saying he always writes issues end to beginning, so writing an arc that way wouldn't actually be that big a leap.

Yeah.

It explains a few of the things that piss me off about his comics writing, though I honestly can't blame him as I can also really see where the strengths of it would be. It's probably great for steamrolling writer's block.

Yeah, and for confusing oneself, resulting in s***ty comics. I guess it explains a few things about his writing for me, too.

Expanding on that a bit, one of the things I've always found with pretty much any kind of writing is you start with one really clear core of an idea but then have to spend your time hashing out all the **** that needs to be there to make that idea work. The thing of this is that if you come up with your idea, then sit down and start hammering out all the **** that takes place from whatever starting point you have up until wherever your actual idea takes place, you can get so bogged down in all the **** leading up to it that you lose track of what you were doing to begin with and end up with something completely different from what you meant to do. The backwards approach is just laying down that key initial flash of whatever you wanted to see happen, then working back from there so everything you put down is in service of making that thing happen.

The problem with this approach is either a. your original idea doesn't actually work and you'd be better served by going to the start and working out something that does, or b. the idea itself could work but you're hammering **** in behind it that doesn't support it at all. But I can't honestly say that it's a worse risk than starting out strong but veering off into meandering ******** that ends up nowhere or, or just dawdles along so much that nobody gives a **** anymore by the time it gets there.

The hammering out of details from the beginning to the point that it changes your core idea can actually be positive if it makes the core idea grow and change organically into something better. There are plenty of stories like that from TV shows or movies or novels, where a writer freely admits that they had planned one thing all along, only to find that in making it work within the narrative structure, they realized there was a much better way to do it. Hell, TV in particular is littered with characters who were initially meant to be killed off after one or two appearances but proved to be so interesting that the showrunners decided to keep them around. I mean, look at how much Steve Urkel enriched Family Matters. ;)

Or you could actually click on the link, which says that Millar held off on starting with the first arc because he wanted to see where Loeb was going with Ultimatum first.

Sorry to burst your *****ing bubble.
