I'm not for the un-masking, but obviously it's a split vote, so a lot of people like it.

But keep in mind, Peter is probably going to become an outlaw, a la Bruce Banner, and that has been done before:

Hulk anyone, Ben Reilly anyone.

I mean yes Spider-Man stories would be similar to early Web of Spider-Man, where he is traveling the country and even other countries, and saving the day, or one person, but yeah Peter Parker/Spider-Man can be put in any situation/theme and work it out.

It's just JMS, JoeQ decided to make him Bruce Banner/Hulk for awhile.

It will be fun for a year or two and then will get really boring, really quick,

and they will try to put the mask back on, so to speak, and they will have to come up with a really far fetched ret-con, and I thought ALL SIDES were tired of that already.

I mean, we all do agree on that, right? Retcon is a cop-out? HOw do you see Peter Parker as highway outlaw playing out 2 years down the road?

How come everyone only seems to care what JJJ and his enemies will do?

Everyone now knows who Spider-man is. He's going to answer all thier questions. The world he lives in will finally hear his story.

How will the general public react to Peter Parker?

I think they will fall in love with him. I mean we did.

Him and MJ are going to be hounded by reporters and paparazzi. There will be non stop interviews and movie, book and tv offers.

And what about MJ? How will this effect her carrer?

I'm in the boat that niether MJ nor May will be hurt. They are going to get personal bodyguards just like the families of other celebrities.

I think it will be Peter getting ambushed in his street clothes. Middle of the day just walking down the street spider-sense goes off,dog pile on Peter.:spidey:

I can't wait.

Ya know, the more I think about it, I kinda like this:

ironman425x100copy3rx.jpg

I mean, I like the idea of change and to see where this is going, but then I think again that it's taking something away that was a "spidey classic."

A year from now we'll all be saying how shocking the next big idea at marvel is and be saying how we miss civil war

Parker revealed all and Jameson dropped to the ground like a stone. Fainted (maybe heart attack but I doubt it). A fitting initial reaction.

But what about long term? Hell, what about when these two meet face-to-face?

My mind jumps all over the place trying to picture this. I keep imagining like two or three pages of both characters, alone together, unable to speak. Just tons of facial expressions ranging many emotions and frustration trying say what needs to be said, but no words could really fit. Once one of these guys picks out something to say a new emotion would swoop in and the entire tone of the "conversation" would shift.

What could Jameson be thinking:
1.) I've been lied to. My worst enemy came in and scammed me. Took a paycheck from me to give pictures of himself -- what a scam -- and I took it. Made him famous, is what I did. He stood there in my office countless times as I ranted on what I had planned for Spider-Man in the editorial pages and he was/is Spider-Man. Like a spy. A spy I brought into my home and took money from me.
2.) How could you? I took you under my wing and you were this scumbag all along? I went to your wedding for God’s sake, hell you went to mine too! I brought you up in this second family of mine and…how could you?
3.) No way. It’s not him. I won’t hear it any other way, it’s just. Not. Him. Goodie-goodie little Parker? Criminal mastermind? Nah, Peter’s pulled this stunt before. Sure it’s on a bigger scale, but c’mon! It’s Peter Parker!
4.) You see this is why the masks have to come off! This is why! Journalists exist to keep people informed and that is a necessity in society. People need to know what’s going on in the world around them. We, as journalists, work to keep masks, both literal and figuratively, off schmucks and find their true intentions. And Peter Parker -- this wolf in sheep’s clothing -- is a perfect example. I treated this boy as not only a loyal employee, but also as a friend. Some around the office would even say: like a son. And because of masks he was able to walk around and pretend to be something he is not, a good human being, during the day and at night being the criminal he truly is.

And the famous vintage J.J. reaction:

5.) I knew it the whole time! Keep you friends close and your enemies, yadda, yadda, yadda -- that whole shtick. I’m telling you I knew! Real journalists always know. I was just testing these clowns in my bullpen, that‘s all. I’m telling you I knew!

And that’s just Jameson. What about Parker?:
1.) I’m so, so, so, sorry. I can’t believe I lied to the old guy for this long. Sure we had our problems, but…he doesn’t deserve to be hurt and embarrassed like this.
2.) Hey, did you hear the one about the employee who was actually a “masked menace” to New York? It’s a real zinger.
3.) Well, Jonah, you wanted to know. For years you were biting on my web heels to find out the secret of yours truly. Kind of sucks to know now, huh?
4.) Who’d you think it was? Your son? HA!

Or if this whole reveal backfires and Parker’s friends and family get attacked:

5.) You happy? You got what you wanted. My identity is out in the world. You won. Congrats to you. And now the person who you’ve know for the past decade is going to be the biggest target for every bad guy on the block. Every last one. Remember my Aunt May? Nice old lady. Baked you cookies and wheat cakes every Christmas and on your birthday without so much as a thank you? Yeah, that one. Uh, just saved her from getting attacked on the subway by Shocker and Hydro Man. She’s still shaking you know. Oh, and my wife M.J. You met her, right? You went to our wedding and all that, you ate fifty cocktail weenies and got sick and yelled at the cook -- good times. Anyway, she was just assaulted while doing he Broadway show by so mob guy I don’t think I’ve ever even heard of. Had to take her to the hospital where, guess what, she was attacked again by Rhino. Rhino. They guy that couldn’t find his own horn on top of his head is even smart enough to go after Mary Jane to get to me. And -- this was embarrassing -- on the way there he bumped into Tombstone, Boomerang, and like a dozen or so more guys that had the EXACT same idea. Can you believe it? “Great minds,” and all that.
But enough about my day. This is really YOUR day, isn’t it? It’s all about you, big guy. You finally got your way and now my identity’s out there. Kudos to you.

And that’s just Parker and Jameson. Could you imagine what the rest of the Bugle is going through? They’re suppose to be the top journalists around and they had the biggest story in New York under their nose for at least a decade! They must be laughing stocks in the media! Not as bad as the Daily Planet would feel if Clark came out, ‘cause of the whole glasses thing, but pretty damn close.

For Parker to come out and be under the Bugle’s nose for so long, it would have to be like the USA Today finding out Osama was writing their word jumbles this entire time. Or if the National Enquirer’s basement was a regular meeting place for a Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg/Paris Hilton/Angela Joile/cast of Ocean’s Twelve orgy.

They’re either laughing stocks or being seen as scam artists who probably knew the whole time and that’s why they got such great photos. Like Jameson secretly sponsored Spidey or something. And Jameson’s rag goes from being the top newspaper for being such a strong force in the registration act, to being a joke you couldn’t give away.

*whew* My rant is done for now. Thoughts?

I like it.It's a big step forward and a big change.

I am cautiously optomistic.

My heart sank when I first saw it "they can't do that! holy ****!"

But then again, if we fanboys demand that our star character never changes, never evolves, never breaks with tradition then that character loses something. If he loses the possibility of something big and momentus like revealing his identity to the whole fricken world, then each issue becomes isolated from every other. That just creates a weak character and a weak comic.

Peter graduated high school, graduated college, got married, Aunt May found out his identity, it's all part of his growth and evolution as a character. While difficult to imagine for us now, having a public identity is just one more aspect of the character's growth. Assuming they don't do a ridiculous retcon (please no) then I think this will be an intersting change in the long run - even if it's difficult to accept now.

^I saw that exact same response in another thread

Overall, I can say I feel the same way. But there are some moments where you have to think, "There is no way he would do that!" Nonetheless, the unmasking will bring interesting stories and that's coming from a guy who isn't completely against the unmasking, but definitely is very uneasy about it.

So in order for Spidey to grow he needs to give up his secret identity? How about having a kid or training someone to take over his work? That's seems a lot more like real life growth.

As for all the don't worry it'll get retconned responses. How does that make it better, that makes it a million times worse because it's another Marvel miniseries supposedly in continuity that doesn't matter.

"Outing" heroes can work if done well, Daredevil was outed and at great personal pain and sacrifice is trying to keep his secret. Iron Man is the other end of the spectrum Civil War Frontline is what the 3rd or 4th time Iron Man revealed himself in the past five years, everyone just seems to forget, so he has to remind them once every year or two?

Sorry all but this is not splitting the internet in half if you like the unmasking you are a minority period end of discussion just check the lopsided poll....:down

Yeah, but Peter wasn't pressured by JJJ to reveal his ID, so why lay a guilt trip like that on a guy that was completely uninvolved in his decision.

No unmasking bashing, you have your own thread for it.

It's guys like you who allow Spidey to be ruined.

Anybody who relishes anything 'Clone Saga' should be b*tch slapped.

I didn't know people were going to be this ridiculous about it.

HAHA! Seriously, man.

"I'm dropping all Marvel titles now!!"

Ha.

And after it's died down some I've seen the "I'm dropping all Marvel titles!...Um, well, except Nextwave and Spider-Girl! BUT I'M DROPPING ALL MARVEL TITLES!!"

But I love that this has happened.

I've been waiting for them to unmask Spider-Man for like 13 years now. First of all, how regular everyday people in New York haven't figured out by now who Spider-Man really is has baffled me over the years.

Peter Parker takes pictures of Spider-Man....he's the same height, weight, and build as Spider-Man. But NO ONE NOTICES THIS?!?!

Hey, I'm all for the secret identity and it's helped make some entertaining stories for Spider-Man.

But he's had the mask and the secret identity thing has been around for 44 FREAKIN' YEARS NOW!!! Don't you think, temporarily at least, that maybe the guy can unmask and, we the fans, can get to see what Spidey's life is like when he takes the mask off.

Yes, I'd like this to be temporary and I would like to see the proverbial cat placed back into the bag...but for now we're going to be getting some exciting, interesting, and kick ass Spider-Man stories.

I'd rather have this going on then "OMG, Doctor Octopus is building a nuclear weapon! I must stop him!" "Oh no! Electro has drained the city of it's power, I have to stop him!"

At least we're getting something interesting and their actually having it make sense, as opposed to just having him randomly take off his mask. They did it, actually, in a nice respectful way to Spider-Man and Peter Parker.

I mean, they could have had Peter originally join the revolution side of things and then be hunted down by the heroes who support it and be unmasked THAT WAY!

But I'm in support of this and look forward to the intense stories that we're going to be getting.

What I don't understand though is the anger and animosity that some fans are showing.

Quesada and JMS are talking about a Lee/Ditko-esque Spider-Man. Jeph Loeb is coming to write an ongoing Spider-Man title. Now, is an unmasked Spider-Man a Lee/Ditko-esque Spider-Man? And do you really think that Jeph Loeb is going to write Spider-Man unmasked? In an Iron Man like costume? With a dead MJ or Aunt May?

For Spider-Man fans who have been demanding things to go back to how they've always been...they're really being unappreciative of what they're being handed here. A chance to take things back to what they want...

But I have to say, it is rather entertaining watching grown men freak out like little kids on a message board. :O

Ok, fine, whatever.
I left Marvel for what they did to Gwen.
Did me saving $1000.oo to $2000.oo a year on marvel, and them losing that much each year stop them from writing "The Other?"
NO.

No matter what we fans do or don't do, say or don't say, Marvel will do whatever they want, whenever they want.

It's their character, they can do whatever the hell they want to do with him.
It's make believe, not real.
most of you people have yet to realize this.

Some fans may not like some stories, some fans do.
Who cares. I don't really anymore, if I find something interesting, I'll give it a chance, if not I won't bother.
I'm only reading Civil War cause it sounds interesting.
I'm not so ga-ga over every little thing that happens or doesnt happen anymore, I grew up, you should too.

P.s.
I LOVE THE BEN REILLY SAGA.
so what if i do, how does me liking the Ben Reilly saga, impact you in any way? You fanboys made sure he was killed off, and your still B****ing about him.

He's accused him of being in league with every villain on the planet just about. Said he was Electro, said he was working with the likes of Venom, Goblin, Kingpin, etc. It's not that hard to imagine.

But JJ has been pressuring this agenda for years. I like to think Jameson has a little hand in this registration thing. The New Warrior thing was the final straw, sure. JJ was one of, if not THE, first guy in the MU to be anti-vigilante. He's like the godfather of this movement when you look back at the early days really.

And if Peter had his family attacked it's safe to say he'd be a bit on the emotional side. If he ran into JJ after that it would only be human for Peter to rip into him verbally. Especially if Jameson said something out of line, which...well it's JJ.

anyways, as for my thoughts, i think you brought up some really great points i never really thought of how betrayed JJJ could feel by the whole thing.

I've changed sides. I was a mask on supporter, but I think I've figured out what their gonna do to fix this and I really like it.

I hated the Clone Saga, made me lose interest in comics for a while.

But I think this unmasking thing could be really good if done right. So far it looks like they are doing it right.

Actually, that has always been my stance, but thanks for being a prick about it. In those two cases, my love for the writers overrides the crap that is Marvel.

You're really being quite an elitist jerk, kiddo. I can't wait until something goes against what you like so I can return the favor.
