Okay. But again, what is that building toward? I just don't see any goal/end-game for this shared universe.
That said, I think it'll be a moot point. I think The Mummy is going to underperform (if not outright bomb), effectively killing the Universal Monsters shared universe.
Yeah I kinda agree here.
MonsterVerse builds towards Godzilla vs Kong
MCU built towards Avengers
DCEU built toward JL
This (what are we calling this universe? Kong and Godzilla already have MonsterVerse coined) builds towards what? What is the event? Hyde vs Dracula vs The Mummy vs The Bride of Frankenstein vs The Invisible Man vs The Creature from Black Lagoon? Are they gonna go the lame route and have some of the monsters be good and some of them be bad and have them fight?*
I think they kinda missed some gold opportunities/made some bad decisions with making this shared universe.
1. Van Helsing shouldve been the Nick Fury/connective tissue not Dr. Jekyll like I hear they're doing
2. They should've made this more horror-esque. I dont mean straight up R rated horror films, but not generic looking films like Dracula Untold and The Mummy. We already have 2 superhero shared universes, about to have 3 with X-Men if you count that and we have a kaiju universe. A darker, sub $100 mill budget, more sinister action series featuring all these classic monsters would be a lot cooler than what it looks like we're getting now
3. They should've made these movies period pieces. I just think these classic monsters work in a period setting rather than modern times
4. Should've gotten real talent to kick this off. Alex Kurtzman has directed 1 movie that flopped at the box office, didn't make a huge critical impact, and was forgettable. Why is he directing the movie that is supposed to start this universe
5. As Matt said, what are they building toward? What will be the plot of this crossover that inevitably will happen? It just seems like a shared universe just to have it. You're wasting money on all these major stars and to me it just seems like theyre flopping in the wind.
Now I think The Mummy 2017 looks decent but I dont imagine it being that successful to keep on with this franchise. I could be wrong, but I dont see a long bright future for this universe
*EDIT: I forgot Wolfman. So itll be Wolfman vs Hyde vs Dracula vs The Mummy vs The Bride of Frankenstein vs The Invisible Man vs The Creature from Black Lagoon
Am I missing anyone?
