Universal Monsters

I struggle to comprehend that they thought they could turn Universal Monsters into their own version of the MCU in this way. But that's Hollywood for you.

I know that the older Universal horror films crossed over, but it didn't work or operate like the MCU which is based on Marvel comics and crossovers that existed in an established shared universe where you have the forces of good battling the forces of evil.

You don't have to tell me this as I was saying it myself from the moment the first trailer landed. Tonally it looked all wrong to me, and not what I had hoped for.

The funny thing is that even though they cut Dracula Untold loose, The Mummy looks the exact same as it. From strategy (more action with dabs of horror) to visually (both look as generic as each other), it all just screamed laziness to me.

It's as if they just ignored everything that caused DU to fail and thought they could get away with doing the exact same thing with The Mummy.....just as long as they said "hey, DU doesn't count."

So, I'm guessing this thing is dead on arrival.
Universal's pumped too much money into this now to stop after one bomb. They'll likely move ahead with at least two more productions before making any serious plan alterations.

Agreed and Bill Condon for Bride is too good to pass up. What I'd do(no idea if the studio would) is kick Kurtzman to the curb. I have no fathomable idea why they invested such a massive enterprise on this guy's shoulders. The amount of talent and money they put behind this whole Dark Universe thing, and they give it to the guy who tried set up something similar in ASM2, and ended disastrously. Get someone else to "Kevin Fiege" this Dark Universe.

From what, I can tell, Kurtzman has been a part this film long before they made him director.
as a co writer and a producer.

I really wish someone had the sense to look at Penny Dreadful, take the basic schematics of it and try to figure out how to adjust it to have a wider appeal.

Instantly you would have something that was very much it's own beast and which couldn't have been accused of ripping off any other shared universe.

That would have been a very solid foundation to build upon.

Why did you have to remind me there isn't going to be more Penny Dreadful? God I miss Eva Green.

Penny Dreadful wasn't my favorite show, but it had great production values and it was solidly executed. But most of all, it was a dark show full of dread and suspense. There was action and even some humor at times, but it largely a show about thrill and chills. It wasn't about turning the monsters into popcorn adventure fare.

At the same time, I'm not sure how you take that type of material and make it more massively appealing without compromising it at the same time. I think you simply have to figure out a way to reduce the budget and keep it like basically R-rated.

It would be pretty funny if they just axed this thing and in a couple years the only thing anyone remembers from it is the Tom Cruise Scream Meme.

You are correct sir, but few really remember or saw People Like Us.

Yeah I know. I even mentioned it a couple pages back in either this or the Mummy thread. No one cares about the movie, but just thought it should be noted that he had directed before

Why do people keep thinking this?
Remember how much money WB put into a GL franchise?
Remember how much money SONY put into there Amazing Spider-Verse?

If anything if they already put a lot of money in this, they're more likely to pull back instead of just throwing more money at this.

If the plane is going down you don't keep diving, you try and pull up.

As I said I think what will happen is:
-Budgets will be cut in subsequent releases
-Depending on how bad the box office is, they might keep making the movies, but they'll dead the Dark Universe

Is Tom Cruise suppose to be the star through all these movies?

so soon this picture will have as much meaning

That first photo, I am not even sure that they are all in the same room.
Tom Cruise and Russel Crowe are not the same height.

Well his feet are hidden by the strategically placed chair Javier is sitting in.
I think there is a milk crate in the shadows!

Lmao. That bottom picture, damn.

Gambit: dead
Fantastic Four: dead
X-Men Apocalypse: critical and commerical dissapointment ( I personally loved the movie, though)
Wolverine: Hugh Jackman's retired

That pic might as well just be Ryan Reynolds standing by himself.

Just got back from "The Mummy". The Dark Universe is in real trouble.

That sums up Fox's plans for the X-verse going forward.
ohhhh . but there's the tv series and next to dea dpool being linked to new mutant's and X-force which will eventually be the same thing. who knows there. but that was an interesting and well placed burn.

I wonder just how much of their old monster catalog Universal is planning on pulling from. Are we gonna see The Old Dark House or This Island Earth again? What about the Black Cat.
