Universal Monsters

The Bride's poster is so cool. Simple and pre-Photoshopped.

For all it's camp I really liked Branagh's Frankenstein. I read that Coppola was originally intended to direct though. That would have been a crazy film.

I guess the earliest the creature from the lagoon will come out is 2020. That's a long wait.

They really should go full on horror route with these from now on (assuming The Mummy does at least decently enough worldwide for the universe to continue).

And hiring a screenwriter who has little to no directing experience to kickstart this is always a good idea. :o

If a "team-up" movie ever happens, it will be so far into the future they could risk losing some of their stars. After the Mummy's performance who knows if Cruise will want to come back. Not to mention coordinating schedules will be a nightmare if there are delays.

This is why you don't hire a bunch of high-level actors for your shared universe. You get green people who are willing to put up with convoluted schedules and back-to-back movies. And also don't cost as much.

They should do all the monsters female. Cash in on the shared universe craze AND the Wonder Woman hype.

The film looks like it could pull a Pacific Rim and be saved by the overseas grosses.

They probably won't do a direct sequel but it actually might make financial sense to have Cruise featured in other films like they do with RDJ at Marvel.

In case you are being serious, we've had Boutella and it's apparently been confirmed a Bride of Frankenstein movie is in the works, so there doesn't seem to be lacking on that department, but I don't see the point of making every single monster in the universe female. Kinda reeks of pandering, imo. The reason Wonder Woman worked really well as a film wasn't solely because it had a female lead. (I wouldn't be opposed to seeing a female Dracula this time around though)

That and, haven't Depp and Javier Bardem been confirmed to play the Invisible Man and the Frankenstein monster respectively, or am I misremembering something?

125M budget means it needs to make around 270M to make it's money back. And movie already grossed 293M worldwide. So it's safe to say movie is already profitable at this point.

The Mummy will probably end up being Universal's Incredible Hulk. TIH only made like $264 million worldwide if I'm not mistaken. The Mummy has done better than that. The Dark Universe isn't in danger yet, but they do need to sit down and really make The Bride a hit domestic AND overseas. I honestly think Bride will be a tougher sell overseas so they have to get that domestic box office locked down.

Variety had the total costs at $290 ($190 production, $100 marketing). http://variety.com/2017/film/news/the-mummy-meltdown-tom-cruise-1202465742/

And since the studio's take is about 50% of domestic BO and 40% or less of foreign grosses, the film has only earned about $124M in total. It's highly doubtful the film will ever be profitable.

if that's true. I dont see how studio ever thought it would be profitable in first place. By this, movie needed to make 600M just to make it even.

The irony might be despite everybody blaming Cruise for the films failure he's probably the only star Universal has signed up who can guarantee BO money.

I can imagine the next Dark Universe film being more critically accepted but making less money than the Mummy.

They were likely thinking Cruise and the prospect of another connected universe would bring out the fans. Universal should have put Jason Blum in charge and kept these all low budget, but they were chasing summer tentpole dollars. Ah well.

Deadline estimates it is looking like a $95M loss for The Mummy.

I still think it's too early to call this a complete Box office failure.

Pacific Rim was likewise written off at this time frame and it finished with 411 million also on a budget of 190 million. As per that article they seem to believe the Mummy will finish with 375 million ww.

It they found PR's tally enough to warrant a sequel, they probably can at least spin-it that the Mummy broke even.

Bride is happening no matter what. They aren't pulling the plug.

I'm hoping Jekyll and Prodigium are relegated to end of movie or post credits stuff for the time being. Bride certainly doesn't need them.

The only way I could see them being involved is if they made Dr. Frankenstein an actual member of Prodigium and based the film around all that. That would save us the bore of Russel Crowe having to introduce another character to Prodigium.

I was semi-serious. Casting all females as monsters would come off gimmicky.

I do believe those two actors have been confirmed. They were in the photo announcing Darkness Universe a few weeks back.

Yeah, I found out about that pic earlier today.

Next one they intent on going forward with is Bride, right?

Just saw this. I definately get the criticisms but nevertheless found it to be fun, if a little 'seen it all before' familiar. Cruise is as energetic, funny and likeable as always but Russell Crowe - my word, you do one helluva Ray Winstone impersonation, sir. :oldrazz:
