Upgrading HDD: Suggestions?

Figured this would be a good place to get some input.

I'm running dangerously low on HDD space. I need mooooore!

Right now I have 120GB but only about 3GB left and that is rapidly shrinking.

So I've decided that I want to upgrade to a 500GB or even a 1TB if it's cheap and reliable enough.

So....

I'm figuring I'll probably go the external HDD route, but I haven't set my mind on that yet.

But I want to make sure I don't get a drive that is known for suddenly crapping out on people one day or anything.

So...

What would be your recommendations for a new external 500GB+ HDD? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Personally i would get another internal Harddrive 500gb or 1Tb which ever, and use it as a slave in my computer, move all the crap you have (picture music videos ect) off the old one and put them on the new one. and just use the old one for software.

I find it better to keep things inside the pc instead of going the shoddy USB route because if the external becomes unstable your going to lose all your stuff. least with internal they last a long long time

Can't go wrong with Seagate, particularly their Barracuda series.

HDs are so cheap now....
Frankly...it doesnt even matter...except..if you want them to be reliable..I suggest either mirroring them or at least, having one copy the data to the other

i have a western digital 500gb EHD. i've never had any problems with them and they are pretty fairly priced right now

That's a great deal on an SATA drive. Seagate is very reliable (to the point that I refuse to buy anything else, anymore) and Newegg is a reputable dealer. Just be sure that what you really need is a drive with an SATA connection rather than an ATA connection.

Nice, but make sure your motherboard has SATA connections on it, or you will be wasting your cash

When upgrading to a huge drive...I always suggest having two drives of the same size.
Lets say you get a 1.5TB drive for your desktop.

Get one for a USB drive also, so you can backup the desktop to the USB drive with no problems of fitting because your USB drive is smaller....just my 2 cents

It does. I checked the front of my computer where it shows that the current HDD is an SATA already.

Good advice, though I'm not sure I can afford that just yet. But definitely good advice to consider.

What's the difference between an SATA connection and an ATA connection? Price and speed maybe?

SATA is a more efficient and faster connection type than ATA. Don't know that it's all that more expensive anymore, though.

Yeah...I have IDE on most my machines (cause they are old) but my NAS is SATA

My main hard drive is IDE (which i really should change) and my slave is on SATA. Also have one with Vista on a SATA but its sitting on my shelve
