Animation Voltron: Legendary Defender

Different kind of uproar. Quite a few identified her as trans, or at the very least non-binary.

So, basically people complaining about not getting something they assumed, wished, wanted, etc. rather than what was in plain sight or not part of the story the writers wanted to tell.

I can understand some people being upset over what happened with Shiro and Adam, since the producers and Dreamworks/Netflix were promoting and touting the hell out of the representation, only to do that. Even worse when the show seems to be pairing off Lance and Allura (which was REALLY sudden on her behalf) and Keith and Acxa (have they even talked more than once?). Not enough to harass the cast and crew, though.

I really appreciated Netflix actually putting out 13 episodes instead of the usual 6 or 7. It would've been a weird break considering the Earth storyline in the second half of the "season". I can't believe it's almost ending by the end of the year.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the robot at the end was [BLACKOUT]Haggar's doing. Kolivan did say that the Blade of Marmora found Lotor's Altean base empty, and we know Haggar knew about it by spying on the paladins through "Kuron." It's clear at this point they're setting her up as the endgame villain.[/BLACKOUT]

It's fitting, really. She started this entire mess when she researched Quintessence as Honerva. Now, it ends with her.

Yeah, I assume it was her doing. But, was expecting to see her. Had to go read what happened to her last season.

I don't see how there could be any uproar about Pidge being a girl. It's been pretty clear that she's one. If there was any issue, I'm sure it would've been around the time they revealed it and that was a while ago.

Well I recall in the flashbacks of season 1 at home she looked very feminine. She was dressing as a boy as a disguise because she didn't want people to know she was the daughter of those astronauts. Now maybe she identifies as binary now, dunno. But it wasn't like an established thing. She even said in the first season, "Well I can't man up because I'm a girl but I'm with you."

I don't know. Seemed like it was pretty clear to me that she was pulling a "Mulan" on Galaxy Garrison. And it's clear who she may or may not be attracted to isn't a concern for any part of the story they've told so far. But, I don't follow everything the producers say of the show like some fans. So, maybe those fans are going off of that or like I said before, they just wanted something in this show and the writers didn't go that route.

Really Lance is the only one who's shown major attraction to anyone, mostly for comedy. There was Allura and Lotor briefly. And I guess Hunk has Shay maybe.

Also, I thought it was funny how Pidge and Matt pretty much have now exchanged looks of short hair and glasses versus long hair and no glasses.

Yes I also thought it was a Mulan thing, but her sexuality has never come up in the show.

...How is his hair like Anderson Cooper...?

It's gray.

LOL at this line from the article:

Vulture spoke with the show’s executive producers, Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery, about their decision to reveal Shiro’s sexuality (and the fact that he was gay all along)…

As opposed to what? Him "becoming" gay when his spirit merged with the black lion? :hehe:

What made me laugh was them pretty much saying that the execs were just seeing it as an action toon for 6-11 year old kids that could sell toys and the writers not really being that big on the romance anyway. But, that stuff can be easily assumed based on the concept of the show and just watching it.

Using my incredible Sherlock Holmes-like deductive skills I've come to the conclusion you haven't watched the last couple of seasons.
Not yet.

I kind of tuned out after the Lothor alliance.

I really liked this season. They managed to make it packed and boy was it ever packed. They essentially shoe horned in a whole new set of supporting characters and repurposed a bunch of other background and supporting characters into new roles. The action was on point and there were some episodes and moments that got under the hood of the team, though not nearly as in depth as it should have been in my view.

I agree with some about the deus machina over drive in the last episode. It came off just a bit more disjointed than it needed to be at the finale. I also think that yeah, they should have done something other than that Family Feud comedy episode. An episode of say, Hunk's family living on Earth dealing with the ramifications of the season's arc or putting more meat on the bones of some of the "reveals". Similar to LEGEND OF KORRA I think they did something one over due but just like KORRA in execution it just felt really abrupt though I can see the other side of the argument that by having it dropped in as casually as any other aspect of a character that was kind of the point.

The last moment does seem to indicate Hagar is the final villain to vanquish and I am still hyped for the next season.

I have to say this reboot has kinda always done its own thing and it isn't always predictable. It plays with the expectations from the set up of the original Voltron and throws the audience a lot of curves. For sure there are some things that you can see where it is going just from it being a kids fantasy cartoon. It's only gonna go so far and be so complex. That's frustrating sometimes for myself. Many times it feels like the show has an emergency brake that keeps it from reaching the level of a LAST AIR BENDER or KORRA. It's close though.

Really enjoyed the latest season, episodes 7/8 reminded me a lot of the 1st season of Robotech, especially with the introduction of the new pilots, and earth using Alien technology to upgrade their defenses.

Plenty of people were pissed off about the Power Rangers movie having a gay character who just had 1 sentence that alluded to them being gay.

It has become overly popular these past few years for movies/tv shows to reveal that X character is gay only for it to be something that is alluded to in a blink and you'll miss it moment. Not to mention that they reveal Shiro is gay and then kill off his supposed fiance/boyfriend? For no reason? While all the other straight characters/romances survive? Yeah people will be pissed.

No one threw JK Rowling under the bus for it.

In the media, all I saw were constant headlines praising Power Rangers for doing what Voltron is being accused of.

Social media is a much bigger thing now then when JK revealed anything about Dumbledore and a franchise that had finished before any revelations came out but there were still plenty of people that were pissed at her as well.

And you werent talking specifically about the media in your comment, it isnt as if Voltron is getting blasted in the media either. Its all about fan reaction. And Power Rangers flopped at the box office since barely anyone saw it so do you think it would get that much attention? Fans called out Beauty and the Beast for the same thing. The100 got massive backlash from fans over killing off a gay character.

I don't recall anyone being angry at her at all for "queerbaiting."

All I remember with Beauty and the Beast is fans defending the film alluding to character being gay and how ultra conservatives were being hyper-sensitive about it.

Totally agreed. I think we should be honest about our criticisms and the things we like. The show queerbaited audiences into thinking Shiro’s romantic relationship with a man would be important but all we got was one subtextual scene and one dead gay man. I do give the show credit for giving a queer amputee Japanese man an integral role in this series. The show doesn’t exist in a vacuum and while I think Shiro is rad, it ended up reinforcing really crappy trends. Just consider all the positive attention (that translates into views and $$$) the show got from its announcement at Comic Con and what it actually delivered.

The animation continues to be incredible and this story was very tense and addictive, at the expense of some character development.

I am mad at her for queerbaiting and have read critiques for forever about this (and of course they continue to be relevant now that Fantastic Beasts is a mess).
