Warner Bros. has plans to adapt Tite Kubo's manga series Bleach into a live-action feature, Variety reports. Peter Segal, who most recently directed Get Smart, will produce and potentially direct while Dan Mazeau (Wrath of the Titans) is attached to draft the screenplay.

First published as a serial in "Weekly Shōmen Jump," Bleach tells the story of a young man, Ichigo Kurosaki, who has the power to see ghosts. His life is forever changed after a run-in with a woman named Rukia Kuchiki, who tracks evil spirits called Hollows. She transfers her powers to Ichigo and he takes up the mantle of Soul Reaper, strandind her in the mortal world.

That's nice for Bleach fans. The first movie I may enjoy but then it'll probably start getting on my nerves after that. I really wish these adaptions would do what they should do and fix issues with the original material, making an overall superior film.

HAH!

Yeah right. Like that will happen.

Get Trank ASAP!

Kidding...kind of.

WB + Bleach + Any anime for that matter = disaster

"Okay guys so Akira is a disaster, so let's pick a less popular anime to destroy"

Lol, Bleach should somewhat be easier I think. Hell of a lot more characters though. I think they might just stick with Rukia and Ichigo for the movie.

Please let this crash and burn before it gets any further.

I don't think Americans would buy into this concept of the material for a big Hollywood movie.

Also the other issue is that is RIPD also essentially not just an American/Hollywood version of what Bleach basically is?

I love Bleach, I love Warner Brothers, but this idea is just ridiculous!

like all anime adaptions trust me the next updates will be

"Bleach has been put on hold for Budget Reasons"

Dear Hollywood, if you're gonna adapt an anime it should be GANTZ.

keanu as itachigo or bust!

movie is going to be greatness, on par with dragonball z.

LOL, 50 year old Keanu as Ichigo.

I have a hard time believing Hollywood versions of Bleach and Death Note will ever see the light of day.

For one thing, Bleach is so high concept, the budget to do a lot of it would be freaking astronomical unless they cut huge portions of it out.

Plus how do you translate the whole Shinigami aspect and all the things that are very culturally Japanese about it? To me the Shinigami characters and their designs are some of the coolest parts. How do you do that for an American audience who aren't into things like samurai and what not?

Plus the manga is massive and has a cast of about a million characters. That's just not something you can do easily for a 2 hour film. The manga is able to take advantage of the format and delve into all the supporting characters. Everyone's got these huge fleshed out backstories.

^death note will be easier and they already have shane black set to direct and write

Shane Black's doing Iron Man 3 now so I mean, there's no way we see a movie like Death note until like 2014 at the earliest.

I bet you Death Note also doesn't get done either. Wouldn't be the first time a project changes hands.

I completly agree.....as a huge fan I'm not too sure how I feel about this.....I cannot see hollywood just letting this stay in Japan...or Karakura town for that matter and the soul society staying in the fuedal japan style which is the best part of the soul society and what makes it so great...not to mention every name in this show is Japanese except for Sado aka Chad lol

Though I do think Keanu could play a decent Captian Kyōraku

Well just for comparison, I think Kamen Rider Dragon Knight actually did a good adaptation/re-versioning of the Japanese version of Kamen Rider Ryuki. It was kept fairly faithful. They did their own scenes and takes on the plot though. But the characters had new American names, some of which were similar, and what not but the plots and everything else were the same. However, that show wasn't a big hit over here either but I love Kamen Rider.

Now I assume basically almost if not all the characters would have be renamed or changed into American type characters. But then still how do you design or present Shinigami or Soul Reapers, Soul Society, etc?

yeah but you know how it goes

Ichigo Kurosaki? but he has blonde hair he must be white!! his new name shall be Ian

Yea I would hate to think they would change the shinigami to be like Cowboys or something stupid like that

I really want to know how WB plans to approach this...will they try to remain faithful like Harry Potter or Do there own spin on it like Nolans batman trilogy.

I also have Zero Faith In Peter Segal

well he did say he respects the material
"I've always been a huge fan of 'Bleach' and have great respect for its creator Kubo Sensei and the truly original and amazing world he has created in this manga," said Segal, whose "Get Smart" pic grossed more than $230 million worldwide for WB in 2008.
hope he stays true to his word

well he was good to the material from a story standpoint he just sucks

^yeah he adapted the right episodes and the film visually looked right he just sucks lol

why he made TLA less than 2 hours is beyond me lol
