Warner Bros to Adapt Live Action Bleach

As long as they get Christina Hendricks for Rangiku, they can do whatever the **** they want.

Don't know why Hollywood is intent on white washing distinctly Japanese anime like Akira and Bleach when they can just adapt Fullmetal Alchemist which actually has protagonist who are white (Edward and Alphonse Elric). Idiots.

I mean come on now! If they don't do this the way Universal is making 47 Ronin (filming both in Japanese and English) than this will become a complete bastardization.

Better yet WB why not do it like your Rurouni Kenshin film coming out this year which is financed by WB while letting Japanese talent work on it. Hire Takashi Miike and a great cast and you've got yourself a great Bleach film.

Please don't try Americanizing this. It'll end up being a bigger failure than your half baked patronizing Akira concept.

plenty of anime have white leads

Berserk
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop

why not go with those instead

That's what I'm saying. It makes no sense.

These goons keep going for the most Japanese stories and try Americanizing them to the point of failure.

I mean Code Geass would be perfect. It has mechs and an interesting plot involving future Europe heavily and the main character is named Lelouch Lamperouge who is the prince of Britannia.

Seriously there is a good deal of manga with actual white protagonists. Sigh.

You know why Bleach was snapped up? Because of its current popularity. It was well known years back by those otaku types and in Japan, but it's become mainstream as of late with all the merch in stores and what not.

I just realized what a dream this series is for American studios just because of Rangiku. Plant humongous breasts on the screen and you've already got every male with a pulse there. Also Yoruichi. I'm surprised they didn't get Bay to direct this.

Also after watching Sherlock Stephen Moffat should have written Death Note. I hope they never option FMA after this news.

Yeah that's why the anime is getting cancelled and the manga has been going down in popularity for the past couple of years.

They bought it just when it was going down from its peak. It was part of the "Big 3" but it hasn't been up there in the JUMP ratings for a while now.

Plus with who they have hired (the guy who directed ****ing Nutty Professor II? Really!?) none of the American fans will even bother. Another DB:E type of situation.

Man, BLEACH is just the wrong way to go. Like Craig stated above me, the manga has been losing alot of it's popularity for awhile now in Japan and America. In fact, hasn't Adult Swim been rumored to have cancelled the series on several occasions?

BLEACH was great up until a certain point. It's just gotten redundant and dull nowadays.

I still love reading Bleach myself but yeah you're right about everything you wrote.

Because that's still covering the Aizen/Espada arc and one weekly ranking isn't indicative of the rankings as a whole.

This graph from JUMP rankings in Japan is way more accurate:

Bleach is the orange line:

Bleach Producer Jason Hoffs is the Head of Production for VIZ Productions. He has been working in the film industry for over two decades. He recently participated in an interview with Deb Aoki to discuss how the live-action project came together. A process that began all the way back in 2008. He also used this opportunity as a way to alleviate concerns that many fans of Bleach have about the Hollywood version.

Q: Now that Warner Brothers has acquired the rights to produce Bleach, what does that entail? What I mean is, what happens now? I know there's a lot of steps involved to make a big project like this come to fruition, but any idea when fans might expect to see this Bleach feature film? I understand that it's probably not possible for you to give us a firm release date at this early stage of the game, but can you give us some idea where things stand now?

Jason Hoffs: Our screenwriter, Dan Mazeau, will begin writing the film shortly, with the input of our director and the producing team. We hope to have a first screenplay later this year. We of course communicate with Kubo-sensei and the Shueisha team at key stages in the process.
Q: Was Bleach a project that VIZ Productions pitched to movie studios, or was it a situation where the producers approached VIZ Productions to get the rights? There was mention in the press release that a few folks involved with this project are big fans of Bleach.

Jason Hoffs: VIZ Productions teamed up with Masi Oka early in the process. Masi is a huge fan of Bleach, and a true otaku.

Early on, we had many discussions with Shueisha and Kubo-sensei about the creative direction of the film. Masi had worked with Pete Segal and his partner Michael Ewing on Get Smart, and Masi brought Bleach to Pete. The writer, Dan Mazeau had been on everybody's radar, so when he committed we were all thrilled. Once the team was assembled, we approached Warner Brothers.
Q: There's always some anxiety from fans when Japanese manga is adapted by Hollywood, that it will be... well, changed a lot from the original stories/characters/premise. Would you like to address this issue/concern from fans?

Jason Hoffs: Every creator, and every fan, has a picture of the property or a relationship with the property that is formed with the original medium. Creators and fans of manga are not alone in that regard. Any adaptation requires a change of format and of style.

In the case of manga, so much has to be condensed to squeeze the story into a feature film format. So even in the best of circumstances, it's a big challenge. Fans have been disappointed with recent manga and anime-based features. We have to learn from these examples, and keep working to do better.

We build a relationship between the creator, his/her team in Japan and the Hollywood creative team to create a basic common vision from the beginning of the process. There is an essence or quality in the original material that makes it attractive as a feature film, and the team tries to preserve and translate this essence into the film version.

Our greatest goal, and certainly the goal of the creator, is that the film should delight the fans. At the same time, the intention of the film version is to introduce a larger global audience to the property. It will always be a challenge to balance fidelity to the original work, while supporting the creativity and originality of the filmmakers in bringing their vision to the film.

Yeah Shueisha also sold the rights for Dragonball over to Fox and we know how that turned out.

That does nothing to alleviate my fears. Especially knowing that Pete Segals pathetic ass is still working on it.

Bleach's sales ranking in Japan dropped from 5th to 8th over last year while selling a million less copies. So a decline in that region is definite. Never knew One Piece was that much popular over everything else. It's seems laughable to have Naruto and Bleach grouped in as the Big Three with them.

Naruto is the blue line so it's definitely still popular. I mean the 6:00 block on TV Tokyo is removing Bleach and putting in the Rock Lee spin off instead for goodness sake.

With that said One Piece is so beastly that the graph doesn't even include them. It literally broke itself from the chart. The most consistently successful Shonen since Dragonball.

Screenwriter Talks Bleach

On Bleach:

“I love ‘Bleach!’ ‘Bleach’ is awesome,” laughed Mazeau. “It’s been a long process getting to write the script. Getting the rights from the Japanese company that owned them was a complicated process. But early on we set down with Tite Kubo the creator and the publisher of the series, and we had a long meeting, making sure we’re respectful to the property. Nobody wants to, well… Let’s just say that if you enjoyed [the live-action] ‘Dragonball Z’ movie, that’s great, but I thought it was a noble effort that ultimately didn’t succeed. That’s what we’re trying to avoid. We want to make sure this movie lives up to what the manga is.”

“I’m currently working on ‘Bleach’ and the idea is to set it in Japan and really be respectful to the source material,”
he added. “It’s an amazing story. I’ve been shorthanding it as an ‘action-adventure Sixth Sense,’ but obviously on a bigger canvas than that. So I’m incredibly excited about that. It’s a good one.”
