Fantasy Warner Bros to reboot Willy Wonka

Yeah, it’s definitely missing any Roald Dahl-ness for sure.

Basically the tone seems more Paddington than actual Willy Wonka.
Now now, there's plenty of room for child abuse in this story even if it's not coming from Wonka himself. :o

I guess when Wonka was a teenager he was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and had no concept of cynicism, meanness, or hatred yet.

Maybe he will acquire his sense of sadism and meanness in the sequel.

Surprised by the high praise because I didn't like the trailer at all. But nice to hear it seems to be received well.

Not sure if I'll enjoy it but maybe i'll actually check it out in theaters now

I had such a great time with Wonka. Timothée has a sweet singing voice, I'm really surprised the marketing didn't lead with the musical aspect, this thing has a ton of brand-new songs and a couple of classics brought from the 1971 film, all well-realized. I'm not a huge musical person in the slightest, but the music sequences were so good and the songs were nice, if not anything extra special, that for once I was actually happy when the characters started singing. Beyond the singing, Timmy is fantastic in the film, oozing likability and real modern leading man qualities. Paul King brings the same mix of comedy, sentimentality, and sweetness from the Paddington films and it always hits the spot. It's whimsical and exciting in a beautifully rich live-action cartoon way, which once again raises the question of why the live-action Disney adaptations are so ghastly when those films are so much more expensive than Wonka is. I made the occasion extra special by investing in some pricey (but very much worth it) artisan chocolate confections, which I highly recommend if you're watching this. Chocolate, bring chocolate!
All things considered, if you buy a pack of fancier chocolate from the grocery store like Lindt or Ferrero Rocher it's still probably cheaper than a pack of M&Ms at movie theater prices.

Been to see this tonight and loved it, was lucky enough to take my young son who's a similar age as to what I would have been, when I watched the original film which he's also a fan of, from watching that and reading the book together.

It's just a really, really nice family film. More songs in it than I expected, but that wasn't a problem, and just enough nostalgia without going overboard. It's not packed full of humour, and doesn't need to be, but still some good laughs in at and more than a few occasions when I was hapilly sat there just smiling.

Nice to hear this is doing well. I thought the trailers were awful but it might just be the trailers.

I didn't like this film :whoops: Maybe it's because I hold the original in such high regard, it's one of my favourite films ever. Timmy looked like he didn't know what direction to go with the role -- so he went with WeIrD and QUiRky. The cinematography felt like a TV movie too.

I did find the moments with Key really funny. And the idea of a Chocolate Cartel is hilarious. But man, Gene Wilder's performance had so much more dimension to it.

Thanks for that. You’re swaying me to prioritise this one (still after Godzilla)

Heard nothing but rave review from anyone who has seen it. Probably gonna check this out in theaters now

Movie was pretty good

But it also resulted in the girl I was seeing deciding that she wanted to be platonic

0/10
Them the brakes. Sorry to hear that

Reminds me when I had 3 separate male friends take women to see 500 Days of Summer back in 09 and right after the movie they all got broken up with because their partners "just weren't feeling it anymore"

Wonka's worldwide box office has passed 500 million (it's close to 510), so it's officially the highest-grossing Willy Wonka film to date. The budget was 25 million less than 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory too so through and through a massive success.

Well 19 years of inflation keep in mind lol

but yes, I’m surprised how successful it is considering the terrible trailers.

I really enjoyed this to my surprise. Timothy cut the right mix of zany inventor/magician and wide eyed noob.

The cast is stacked with British actors from numerous films and TV shows. Patterson Joseph's slugworth was a highlight.

I’d planned to see this in cinemas but not sure I’m going to have time with how busy Dec and Jan were. Hopefully can catch up soon after if not, shame as I was definitely up for it.

Over by me the weather's been keeping me away from theaters so that by the time I finally get around to going it'll probably be on VOD already. I really would like to because I'm not going to go out to the movies again until Dune Part Two.

This movie definitely deserves all its success and then some. I enjoyed it quite a bit and its the perfect Holiday family movie for all ages and hopefully after this and Dune: Part 2 Timothée Chalamet becomes a HUGE star.

I hope he taps into some more drama that isn't so grandiose like I'm imagining the Dylan biopic will be. Also want him to go weird as well. Maybe lead a Wes film at some point, or get in contact w the Asters and Eggers out there. His work w Guadagnino is the most eye-catching for me.
