Was Ivan Vanko really Whiplash? I know that's who Jon Favreau said he was, and how he's referred to in all the marketing and merchandise, and he does brandish a pair of electronic whips. However, Vanko was never referred to by that name in the movie, or even a joking passing reference made to that character (either by the public or by Stark).

In fact, although he was meant to be a combination of Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo, he was actually more Crimson Dynamo than Whiplash. Sure, he had a pair of whips, but that was only for one scene. It wasn't his signature weapon, and he didn't exactly use that in the final climactic battle against Iron Man and War Machine.

In fact, even though he had a whip, that proves nothing. Lots of armoured characters add all kinds of weaponry to their arsenal, borrowing bits from others. Iron Man is a case in point: Shellhead added Force's EMP dampening pulse to his new classic red and gold (after the Armor Wars) as well as the energy shield from the Raiders. Just because he had either of those "signature" weapons from those villains (adapted directly from them) doesn't automatically make Iron Man's name either Force or one of the Raiders. If IM added an electronic whip to his arsenal, he would still be Iron Man. In the same way, just because Vanko, if say he were the Dynamo, had an electronic whip, doesn't automatically make him Whiplash.

Although Favreau et al said Vanko was Whiplash, that seems to be just a token nod. Nothing about him within the movie's universe actually said he was. He was more like the Dynamo (not even crimson - probably so as not to compete with Iron Man's red) who once used a pair of electronic whips. If it weren't for those whips in that Monaco scene, would anyone actually identify him as Whiplash? There's nothing else to associate him with the character, not even the Marc Scarlotti name (or the fact that Scarlotti worked for the Maggia) but everything to associate him with the Dynamo.

He had whips and he lashed at people with them.

He was Whiplash.

Venom was never referred to as "Venom" in Spider-Man 3

...Was Eddie Brock really Venom? :|

He was either Whiplash or Stalingrad Jones.

But he was still Eddie Brock, and in the comics, Eddie Brock is Venom. He had the trademark appearance too.

In IM2, Mickey Rourke wasn't even named Marc Scarlotti, which is Whiplash's identity in the comics. He was named Ivan Vanko, who is apparently the son of Anton Vanko, who is the Crimson Dynamo. If Rourke were any character it would be the Dynamo, only that he wasn't crimson. Rourke didn't keep using the whips in IM2 but upgraded to almost completely different "powers" in the end when he suited up. Does one instance of using electronic whips for one scene make him Whiplash? He didn't even have any of Whiplash's trademark visual appearance. Even the "whips" weren't the same as Whiplash's, who usually wields ONE whip, not two attached to his arms, which is actually more like Constrictor in the way he used and wielded them.

Since he has nothing in common with the comic character, including the real identity, and he didn't continually use a whip as his signature weapon, then can he really be said to be Whiplash? He is more like "Dynamo with whips" in the same way that Shellhead in his new classic red and gold was "Iron Man with dampening force field" or "Iron Man with energy wrist shield" and not the characters "Force" or one of the Raiders.

He definitely did have whips and used them against Iron Man and War Machine in the final battle. In fact he commented that Tony's idea of upgrades worked. They were just whips built into his armor. He had both characters by the throat with them.

Favareu said that Whiplash was going to be a mix of the Dynamo and... Whiplash.

Early last year it was announced that Mickey Rourke's character in Iron Man 2 would be a combination of two comic villains, Whiplash and the Crimson Dynamo. When the first clips of the film were released, fans got to see Rourke sporting modernized Whiplash-esque technology and a Russian accent, but no red armor. Later on down the road, the film's director Jon Favreau told the media that he only used the Crimson Dynamo's surname, Vanko, and modified backstory for Rourke's character; which had fans wondering if the real Dynamo would actually grace the big screen.

Well, he did; though not the way it was expected. Those who have seen Iron Man 2 know that the villainous Whiplash dons a fully armored suit at the film's climax. That suit, though effective for the scene, was an independent design and not influenced by the character's comic counterpart.

Well, today I learned that someone actually cares about the comic's version of Whiplash.

Was that the 'double cycles' thing? lol

Although being a fan i have to say yes. Several things point to him being whiplash.

1.Whips

2.Working with Justin Hammer

3.Upgraded suit. So in theory the second suit, being being black and upgraded with HammerTech TM(lets hope he didnt take the ex-wife)can be considered the blacklash suit.

ps. I think Ivan should have sold the first suit to north korea.

He started as Whiplash, towards the end he became the Whipping Dynamo

Crimson dynamo or whiplash it was a hard character to pull off. But you gotta admit the plasma whips were a cool touch.
