hey guys

i'm not too smart when it comes to web design and crap like that. i have a basic knowledge of html and little else.

you see, my family wants to make a website for our history, pics, genealogy and stuff, and guess who gets to make it? that's right, me.

can you guys recommend some good software/programs/etc to help me with this? preferably free, but if you know of any really great ones that cost some $$$, my uncle (the rich one), is thinking about buying it.

i'd really appreciate some input on this guys. thanks :)

Geocities Page Builder is great for being a free web based designer, real easy.

thanks for the suggestions guys.

is Dreamweaver easy to figure out?

someone at work suggested something called InDesign, anyone know anything about that program?

Adobe GoLive. Easier to learn than DreamWeaver. And it's designed to work with Photoshop (which is where you start to build pages when you get really serious).

thanks for the suggestion wiegabo, i'll check it out

I'm not sure about GoLive but Dreamweaver will take some time to get used to. The interface is not as friendly as Microsoft Frontpage. I used Frontpage during my school days (next to the primitive Netscape Composer), but later I found out that Frontpage has the tendency of changing the codes to pro-Microsoft products. If you're into web page design, I'll say go for Dreamweaver. Once you mastered it, you won't switch to other html editors.

I've looked on the Adobe website and, now that they've bought Dreamweaver, it looks like they don't have a new version of GoLive. So I'm wondering if they changed the way Dreamweaver worked to make it more like GoLive (because GoLive is just so easy to use).

bumping

i just got back from the family reunion, and everyone is psyched about the site's creation, so i need to get the ball rolling and get started.

a friend of mine has a copy of GoLive 6 and said i could have it if i wanted, should i go for it?

GoLive is definitely worth a try. Especially if you already have Photoshop.

And free is free.
