Weird News of the World Thread - Part 2

Ya but the loss of a child is very traumatic and my heart goes out to her. It could have been something like SIDS and she just couldn't cope. I couldn't imagine what losing my daughter would feel like

43 killed in Mexico shootout

I wasn't sure where else to put this. It isn't abuse of power, it is stupid but not for the right reasons. It definitely is weird though.

A three-hour shootout between Mexican security forces and unidentified gunmen Friday left 42 of the gunmen dead, as well as one federal police officer, officials said.

Three gunmen were arrested.

The lengthy firefight erupted in the town of Tanhuato, Michoacan state, when a joint force of federal and state security forces encountered the gunmen in the course of an investigation, Mexican National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido said at a news conference.

The gunmen belonged to a criminal organization operating in the neighboring state of Jalisco, Rubido said, though he didn't name the group.

The commissioner's description of the gunmen contradicts earlier reports that described them as "armed civilians." At least two news agencies, Reuters and AFP, reported that the confrontation was between security forces and civilians. They cited unnamed Mexican officials.

The governor or Michoacan, Salvador Jara, said in television interview that it is "very likely" that the shootout involved the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel.

Rubido told reporters that the confrontation was the result of an investigation that began the previous day. The investigation began Thursday after a property located in Tanhuato was taken over by a group of armed men.

On Friday, Rubido said, as the joint security forces drove toward the property in question, they came across a vehicle with armed men who started firing when they saw the officers.

A chase ensued where the security forces followed the gunmen into the property that had allegedly been invaded the day before, Rubido said.

According to the commissioner, at the property -- which he described as a 275-acre stretch of land with a main residence, a warehouse, and agricultural buildings -- additional gunmen entered the fray with "intensity."

Backup to aid the security officers arrived, including a federal police helicopter, at which point the gunmen spread throughout the property, Rubido said.

The confrontation stretched for hours because of the size of the property, Rubido said. There were at least three standoffs in different parts of the property, he said.

This was a slightly different version than what the mayor of Tanhuato said in an earlier interview. According to the mayor, there were two different shootouts in different locations.

The death toll was 42 gunmen and one federal police officer, who was shot while providing aid to an injured colleague, Rubido said.

The three gunmen who were arrested have been turned over to state prosecutors, he said.

In addition, the security forces seized eight vehicles, six were inside the warehouse and were burned when the structure caught on fire, the commissioner said.

A photo of the burned-out vehicles had been shared earlier on Twitter by a group of citizens who monitor violence in Michoacan.

Authorities also seized 36 long arms, two small arms, one grenade launcher and an undetermined number of ammunition, Rubido said.

Saw something about that on Bookface yesterday. Those are almost movie levels of casualties considering so many "bad guys" died and only one cop fell. That's some stormtrooper ish right there

Sounds like John Matrix from Commando cleaned up that place in Mexico.

Kim Jung Un seriously wants to be a comic book supervillain. He's like a real-life Victor von Doom, only more ridiculous.

For reference to how ridiculously overkill this is simply Google "anti-aircraft gun" and speculate on just how messy that was.

I can totally see him hysterically laughing in this high pitched laugh and clapping then asking if they can do it again.

Vulture Gang Attracted by "Foul Death" Smell Refuses to Leave Man's Home

1281353007570423912.png

Imagine it’s Saturday morning, and you’re about to enjoy a book and a cup of coffee on your back porch, and you’re greeted by four two-foot tall winged eaters of dead meat. They’re staring you down through the glass sliding door, as if to say Do you feel lucky, punk? Oh god, not the vultures again. Welcome to Rick Mize’s world.

For the past month, Mize’s property in Buncombe, Ill., has been infested by vultures. They walk on the roof; they stand around in little gangs, acting all tough; they poop on things that they oughtn’t be pooping on. Minze told local news outlet KPLC that he isn’t sure what brought the birds to his home, but that he thinks the “foul, death” smell he’s been smelling recently might have something to do with it.

“Ok your cat died in your house and you found it five days later after being on vacation,” Mize said to describe the smell surrounding his home. “And you walk into your house. That’s the stench, it’s just fowl, death.”

Mize said he thinks there is a large dead animal near his property. He’s since contacted the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to report the bird problem.

Who could forget that ol’ cat corpse smell? Which is probably even worse than the birds. It’s time to move out, Ricky. This is vulture country now.

Godzilla finally gets citizenship in Japan

_83389036_godzilla_shinjuku.jpg

Most residents of Tokyo's pulsing Shinjuku ward, home to the busiest railway station in the world, are of the homo sapiens variety.
Shinjuku has a population density of about 17,000 people per square kilometre but undeterred by this it has granted citizenship to a new resident, who only goes by one name - Godzilla.

What can Godzilla do in Shinjuku?
While Godzilla's genus is uncertain (thought to be a cross between a gorilla and a whale) in Shinjuku he will find much to do and see. Apart from Tokyo's flagship station, it has the capital's city hall, a high concentration of skyscrapers, Tokyo's best known red light district as well as some quieter residential areas as his potential stomping ground. The city describes itself like this on its website: "A town of remarkable growth as a new downtown district, a town with many cultural assets and traditional events, a town where many people lead active lives together… This is Shinjuku!" It says urbanisation began a while back in 1636.
It's obviously a PR move by Japan and Shinjuku - but ever since Godzilla first appeared in Ishiro Honda's 1954 film and then a series of tokukatsu (live action) films in Japan, the character has remained important in Japanese pop culture and history.

Godzilla's job will be tourism ambassador
To mark the arrival of its newest resident, the Shinjuku City Office distributed 3,000 copies of Godzilla's certificate to delighted fans on Saturday. A replica of Japan's undisputed "King of Monsters" was also placed on top of the district's iconic Toho building. The Japanese film company will release a new Godzilla film in 2016, following the success of a 2014 Hollywood remake by British director Gareth Edwards.
Godzilla attended an awards ceremony in April, where he was presented with a sash from Shinjuku mayor, Kenichi Yoshizumi.

Michael Keaton confronts Andrew McCutchen heckler in Atlanta

pittsburgh-pirates-v-atlanta-braves-20150606-034455-667.jpg

Friday night was a pretty wild night at Turner Field in Atlanta.

Not only did the Pittsburgh Pirates walk away with a big 10-8 victory against the home standing Braves, one of their biggest fans, actor Michael Keaton, was on hand to lend his support and at one point even bothered to trash talk a heckler who has been on Andrew McCutchen's case all night long.

As the story goes, Keaton was seated near the Pirates dugout and was in good spirits, especially after receiving this autographed ball from Pirates right-hander A.J. Burnett.

Apparently, not far away was a Braves fan who was giving McCutchen the business to the point that McCutchen actually acknowledged the fan after hitting an RBI double in the eighth inning.

But things got a little more interesting when Michael Keaton wandered over and started heckling the heckler. He even did the sports fans equivalent of a mic drop by pointing at the scoreboard before taking his leave for the evening.

Of course, it sounds like this fan welcomed the attention. Though tensions may have been slightly high, it seems everybody took the exchanges in stride and remained mostly calm.

If only the video cameras were rolling though, we might have a better idea of what all went into that exchange. Keaton may have even had an extra scene for his next film.

As it turns out, he'll settle for the Pirates victory and a signed baseball while the fan got some batting gloves and a lesson in humility.

Advantage: Batman

Thousands of Escaped Piglets Are on the Run in Ohio

1288865813834622310.png

Alert, alert: forget about that escaped murderer—there’s a real prison break situation out of Ohio, where thousands of piglets are apparently roaming, free and proud, across Ohio’s fair highway shoulders and rest stops.

The squishy little piglets managed to escape the farm, so to speak, when the driver of a semi transporting them—to their death, it should be noted—crashed on U.S. Route 35.

Volunteers have joined the police in their search efforts, I would presume, by checking known pig hangouts like the market, home, and places where roast beef is sold.

Cops ask that residents who spot any rogue piglets call authorities immediately. For purely journalistic reasons, this is what they look like:

CHBRibHWcAA4_g9.jpg

It’s unclear if the fugitives have altered their appearance in any way, but in the interest of safety, we’ve also imagined a rain disguise.

It’s also important to remember that they may try to hide in plain sight, engaging in everyday activities like grocery shopping or, oh my god look at the look on his little face he loves that ice cream cone so much!!!!

Eating Human Brains Encouraged Evolution

The practice of ritualistic mortuary cannibalism used to be common amongst the Fore peoples of Papua New Guinea. When a member of the tribe died, the women in the village used to dismember and prepare the body, which was then eaten. They would often feed bits of the brain to the children and elderly.

It was this custom of eating the brain of the deceased that is thought to have caused the epidemic in the 1950s of “human mad cow disease,” known as kuru, within the Fore peoples. Now, scientists have identified a genetic mutation that likely helped to protect the Fore against developing the illness, a type of prion disease caused by misfolded proteins. This specific mutation was also shown to protect against all other forms of prion disease, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD).

“This is a striking example of Darwinian evolution in humans, the epidemic of prion disease selecting a single genetic change that provided complete protection against an invariably fatal dementia,” John Collinge from University College London, who co-led the work, told Reuters.

The word ‘kuru’ is derived from the Fore language meaning “shaking death,” and the disease belongs to a class of progressive neurodegenerative diseases that includes the so-called “mad cow disease” bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). They are caused by a specific type of infectious protein called ‘prions.’ These are misshapen proteins that accumulate over time, forming clusters in the brain and irreparably disrupting it. Often this leads to lethal damage.

When exploration of Papua New Guinea intensified during the 1950s, an epidemic of kuru was found to be spreading through the population of the southern Fore peoples, infecting around 2% of the population. As soon as symptoms began, mainly identified through uncontrollable shaking, sufferers had around 6-12 months to live. The prion can, however, incubate within the body for up to 40 years.

Previous studies had identified that if a certain amino acid – codon 129 – in the prion-forming protein was swapped for another, then people were less susceptible to the disease. After studying the Fore peoples, Collinge found that they also have a another mutation, this one at codon 127. In this new study, published in Nature, he discovered that the replacement of the amino acid glycine with valine at codon 127 makes transgenic mice completely resistant to both kuru and CJD.

It’s thought to work by preventing the protein from folding, and thus causing the disease, and could have implications for how we treat not only CJD, but also other neurodegenerative diseases. When BSE infected beef in Britain in the 1990s, there were fears that tens of thousands of people would be infected. So far, only 177 people have died of the disease, though it’s thought that up to one in every 2,000 people might be incubating it.

“Thirty thousand people are silently carrying the disease and we don't know whether they will carry on carrying the disease without developing symptoms or go on to develop the disease,”

Someone pick up that phone because Hannibal called it!

Death is terrifying, so why not make it exhilarating instead? That’s the purpose of the “Euthanasia Coaster,” a giant big-dipper design aimed at taking its passengers through a series of extreme drops and loops that would create euphoria and then kill them by starving the brain of oxygen.

This macabre invention is the brainchild of Lithuanian engineer Julijonas Urbonas, who designed it in 2010 as a Ph.D. candidate in design interactions at the Royal College of Art in London. Urbonas, who developed a romance for amusement parks during the years he worked at one, saw this horror-movie scenario as an alternative death ritual propelling people to the afterlife, as he puts it, “humanely with elegance and euphoria.” No one’s actually built it yet, except as a scale model.

Here’s how the world’s oddest suicide method would work: First the rider would face a long, slow climb up to more than 500 meters, giving him or her a few minutes to think back on life and contemplate the decision. At the top, there would be time to say a prayer or blow a kiss to relatives (or bail) before pressing the “fall” button and plummeting into the long steep plunge followed by the first 360-degree loop. That’s where most riders would die. According to Urbonas, traveling at 100 meters per second, the person would experience a G-force-induced loss of consciousness due to cerebral hypoxia (lack of oxygen reaching the brain), which often causes a sense of euphoria. Just in case that first one didn’t do it, six more consecutive loops would finish the job. Building the structure would be a challenge. The Euthanasia Coaster would be more than three times the height of the world’s tallest roller coaster, the Kingda Ka, which took 18 months and $25 million to construct.

Of course this sounds like a nightmare for anyone without a death wish or who doesn’t enjoy white-knuckle thrills and vertigo. But for those who do, Urbonas argues his killer ride would provide a more “humane” death because not only would it be painless — even somewhat pleasant — it would also be more beautiful. “It would be a meaningful death: For the faller, it is a painless, whole-body engaging and ritualized death machine,” says Urbonas, who believes death has become “divorced” from the cultural life in Western society and could be made more significant by a ritual adapted to the contemporary world.

he idea sparked outrage among anti-euthanasia groups. “The life of a human being cannot ever be taken ‘humanely with elegance and euphoria,’” says Dr. Peter Saunders from Care Not Killing, “and with this method the last sensation would more probably be one of overwhelming vertigo and fright.”

The concept of mixing death and fun is even too far-fetched for providers of end-of-life care working with the terminally ill and for defenders of euthanasia. “Such a machine has nothing to do with true euthanasia,” says Derek Humphry, president of the Euthanasia Research & Guidance Organization. “A good death is at home, with family, and a doctor present to relieve pain.”

No surprise the idea’s attracted no commercial interest, though perhaps it will end up being featured in some futuristic, scary movie. The debate around the right to die is already contentious enough without trying to turn it into a show. Yet Urbonas insists that, as an artist, he never meant for his creation to encourage or discourage people from assisted suicide, but simply to offer “food for thought.” That said, if the unlikely day comes when society is ready to embrace his idea of a monumental death ride, he says he’d happily hand the design over to the public.

Admittedly that would be a great way to go. I'd hate to have to clean it up after though.

Also, anyone else have an urge to play Roller Coaster Tycoon now? :D

Researchers Discover Sharks Living In An Active Underwater Volcano

1333366312247882052.gif

Scientists filming unexplored depths of the South Pacific have observed a surprising range of animals—including sharks, rays, and jellyfish—living inside Kavachi, a highly active undersea volcano near the Soloman Islands, a remote archipelago east of Papau New Guinea. The animals seem unruffled by what were presumed inhospitable temperatures and acidity.

[YT]0e3t18rrjOA[/YT]

“The idea of there being large animals, like sharks, hanging out and living inside the caldera of this volcano conflicts with what we know about Kavachi, which is that it erupts,” says ocean engineer (!) Brennan Phillips, who led a team of researchers to the Soloman Islands in search of hydrothermal activity, in the video above. “But when it erupts, there’s no way anything could live in there. And so, to see large animals like this that are living, and potentially they could die at any moment, it brings up lots of questions: Do they leave? Do they have some sort of sign that it’s about to erupt? Do they blow up sky high, in little bits?”

Police: Cannibalism suspected in Russian 'Granny Ripper' case

We need to bump this thread and what better story than a cannibal grandmother?

St. Petersburg, Russia
Police in the Russian city of St. Petersburg say they are investigating cannibalism and occult sacrifice as motives in the suspected slayings of at least 11 people by a pensioner dubbed the "Granny Ripper."

The suspect, 68-year-old Tamara Samsonova, a former hotel worker, was arrested July 28 after security video footage emerged of her taking several large plastic bags out of the apartment block in the middle of the night.

Police said the bags contained the body parts of another pensioner, Valentina Ulanova, 79, with whom the suspect temporarily lived as a carer.

After her arrest, Samsonova was pictured blowing kisses to reporters in court, and she was videoed celebrating when the judge informed her she would be held in custody.

"I'm haunted by a maniac upstairs who forced me to kill," she told reporters through the bars of her courtroom cage.

"I have nowhere else to live. I am a very old person, and I put the whole matter to rest deliberately. I have thought 77 times about it and then decided that I must be in prison. I will die there and the state will probably bury me," Samsonova said.

Police said they have evidence linking the suspect to at least 11 deaths. Police have not revealed evidence to directly support allegations of cannibalism, but they said she kept a detailed diary of her crimes. It is believed the diary has references to cannibalism and the occult that have prompted police to investigate those as possible motives. Police said she has confessed to them in at least two killings.

Investigators said they suspect victims include other neighbors, former tenants and Samsonova's husband, whom she reported missing 10 years ago.

Outside the apartment where police said the latest killing took place, in a grimy suburb on the outskirts of St. Petersburg, residents have placed flowers at the door in memory of the victim, described by neighbors as a kind old veteran who had temporarily taken in Samsonova on the advice of social workers.

Neighbors said they are shocked at what happened, but not altogether surprised.

"That Tamara Samsonova is a very strange women, tricky and suspicious," said Natalia Fedatovskaya, an old friend of the victim.

"When I confronted her about my missing friend, she begged me not to call the police, and grabbed my arm. The police told me later I was lucky to escape," she said.

Police said they are scouring records of unsolved deaths to see just how many people Russia's "Granny Ripper" may have killed.
