Florida Otter Adorably Kills and Eats Alligator

lvzqr3pqactaspk2nvlj.jpg

A snake eating a crocodile? That's so earlier this week. Now it's all about otters that eat alligators.

Not to be outdone by Australia in the animals-devouring-animals department, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service posted photos of the cuddliest little interspecies murder ever on Facebook Tuesday.

This all went down at Florida's Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge—is this the first appearance of Florida Otter?—in 2011. Photographer Geoff Walsh could tell the alligator was being eaten by the "crunching noises" as it sunk from view.

Aww, how cute! It's chomping on the bones of its prey!

Although it's unusual for an otter to go after a gator, it's not unheard of. They normally eat less dangerous things like fish and crustaceans, but they've been known to dine on reptiles and amphibians from time to time.

Murder never looked so cute

Florida Fish Strikes Jet, Forces Aborted Takeoff

gk3judivjc1ekotwzvt8.jpg

So tell me, "Sully" Sullenberger: How do you handle this one?

If you're flying out of anywhere in Tampa Bay, for God's sake, watch out for the fish. Via the AP:

According to MacDill Air Force Base officials, a jet flown by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration pilot was struck by a 9-inch sheepshead during takeoff in September.

"We were nearing the point in the takeoff where we needed to rotate, or raise the nose of the airplane off the ground, when an osprey with something in its claws flew in front of our aircraft," said Lt. Cmdr. Nick Toth, the NOAA pilot.

The crew of the Gulfstream GIV heard a thud and aborted takeoff, assuming they had hit the bird. The jet was not damaged, and none of the crew was injured.

Instead of bird remains on the runway, though, inspectors found the sheepshead, a silvery fish with black stripes on its sides.
Government researchers being government researchers, they sent the fish and samples from the aircraft's impacted areas off to a Smithsonian lab and confirmed that the fish caused the crater.

"At first, we didn't believe the test results," the pilot told AP. "There was no way we hit a fish during takeoff. I mean, how does something like that even happen?"

The osprey apparently couldn't be reached for comment. He likely would have either laughed maniacally or replied: "Hey, where's my freaking fish?"

I love when my home base of Tampa Bay makes the news. FL is also full of awesome wildlife, not just crazy people!

Florida Walmart Sells Family Steak Laced With LSD

This week in Florida Walmart: one in Tampa sold a steak tainted with LSD to a family four, all of whom ended up in the hospital after becoming ill and suffering hallucinations. That included a mother of two who was nine months pregnant with her third child.

That baby was born Thursday after doctors induced labor on the woman after the family arrived at the hospital. According to the hospital, both the child and mother are healthy and were released home.

The Walmart says that it has no idea how it ended up selling a piece of steak infused with a psychedelic drug. The store maintains that all of its meat comes prepackaged and that this is an isolated incident. That said, considering how maniacal Walmart is about its profit margins, it may want to consider that there may actually be a market for selling foods laced with LSD.

What I wanna know is were they got this and why would you waste on steak? It's hard to find good LSD these days

Orgasm Machine Now Ready to Solve All World's Problems

In the latest case of life-imitates-porn-cliché, a surgeon claims he's invented a machine that allows women to give themselves instant, remote-controlled orgasms. As long as they're cool with having electrodes implanted on their spines, anyway.

Stuart Meloy, a surgeon at Piedmont Anaesthesia and Pain Consultants in Winston-Salem, N.C., says he accidentally stumbled upon the idea while treating a patient.

"I was placing the electrodes and suddenly the woman started exclaiming emphatically," he told New Scientist. "I asked her what was up and she said, "You're going to have to teach my husband to do that."'

Meloy says he hasn't tested his device on men, but he has no reason to imagine it wouldn't work. A Minneapolis-based company called Medtronic has signed on to conduct tests of the orgasm machine.

The device is only meant to be used for serious cases of orgasmic dysfunction—a condition where some women's brains read arousal as a fear response, making it difficult for them to have orgasm—although it obviously has non-medical applications.

The procedure is as invasive as installing a pacemaker—it requires implanting electrodes on the spine and a signal generator just below the buttocks, all while the patient is awake—but one expert told New Scientist he assumes teens will eventually get the surgery for fun.

"If young women of 15 or so are having painful operations to enlarge their breasts when they don't have to, are you kidding? Of course it'll be used," said Concordia University neurobiologist Jim Pfaus.

I heard about this a few days ago, before they announced it was a mummified body and had been there for six years.

Michigan woman's auto-payments hid her death for six years

For years, the payments went out of the woman's bank account.

Nobody batted an eyelid. Bills were paid. And life went on as normal in the quiet neighborhood of Pontiac, Michigan.

Neighbors didn't notice anything unusual. The woman traveled a lot, they said, and kept to herself. One of them mowed her grass to keep things looking tidy.
Woman found dead years later in garage

At some point, her bank account ran dry. The bills stopped being paid.

After its warnings went unanswered, the bank holding the mortgage foreclosed on the house, a common occurrence in a region hit hard by economic woes.

Still, nobody noticed what had happened inside the house. Nobody wondered out loud what had become of the owner.

Not until this week, when a worker sent by the bank to repair a hole in the roof made a grisly discovery.

The woman's mummified body was sitting in the back seat of her car, parked in the garage. The key was halfway in the ignition.

Authorities say they believe the woman died at least six years ago. They're still trying to figure out what happened.

"I've been doing this 37 years. Never seen anything like this before," said Undersheriff Mike McCabe of Oakland County, just outside Detroit.

Rarely heard from

The woman, who the sheriff's office believes to be Pia Farrenkopf, paid her bills from her bank account through auto-pay, according to McCabe. If she were still alive, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said, Farrenkopf would be 49 years old.

Neighbors said they didn't know much about the woman, describing her as of German descent.

"She really kept to herself. We never really heard anything from her," neighbor Caitlyn Talbot told CNN affiliate WXYZ.

Talbot said she wasn't aware of anyone having seen the woman, who traveled a lot, in about six years.

"She was probably there for a couple of days, then she'd leave for a week, then she'd come back. Then she'd leave for a month and come back," Talbot said.

McCabe says neighbors chalked up the woman's absences to her returning to Germany for long periods of time.

According to the sheriff, Farrenkopf's employer last saw her in September 2008.

Despite years without a living owner, the house was never broken into, Talbot said. And McCabe said one of the neighbors cut the grass for years.

Authorities told WXYZ that the house appears to have black mold inside, and that detectives entered the building Thursday wearing hazardous material suits.

Bouchard, the county sheriff, said Friday that there were few outward signs of anything awry. Her mail didn't pile up, since the post office was collecting it. And nothing inside in her home or car pointed to a cause of death.

"Nothing remarkable (was) found in the home," the sheriff said.

Cause of death undetermined

Police were dispatched to the house for a welfare check in 2007 after a neighbor reported not having seen the owner in a while. After seeing no signs of anything amiss, police went on their way, McCabe said.

While authorities believe the body is that of Farrenkopf, they will rely on dental records to positively identify her. Farrenkopf's estranged sister has been contacted, according to the undersheriff.

Authorities are awaiting for a toxicology report, which will take four to six weeks, before determining the cause of death. The medical examiner found no signs of trauma to the body, McCabe said.

Dr. Bernardino Pacris, the county deputy medical examiner who conducted the autopsy, told the Detroit Free Press that the woman's skin was still intact, but that the internal organs had decomposed.

Bouchard, the country sheriff, noted that her body was inside a closed vehicle inside a closed garage -- and, thus, not exposed to outside air or other factors that might contribute to decomposition.

Pacris told the newspaper that during the mummification process, skin develops a parchment-like consistency and leathery texture. Finding a body in such a condition is unusual, he said, but "once in a while, we see this."

Ex-Seattle DEA Agent Planned Stripper Meth Ring

Mitchell Wright, a nine-year veteran of the Seattle police force who spent three of those working with the DEA, had big dreams. He wasn't satisfied with taking drugs off the streets — in fact, it was the opposite. He was going to become a drug kingpin, and strippers were going to help him.

Wright was arrested last summer after an investigation discovered oxycodone and other drugs in his apartment that he had stolen from police custody. According to the cops, the street value of the drugs ranged from about $36,000 to $52,000. After he was arrested and fired from the King County PD, local officers spotted Wright at the home of a suspected drug dealer.

A subsequent undercover investigation revealed Wright's plan: he was providing strippers with meth and heroin as a means to coerce them into becoming dealers for him. Eventually, Wright planned to control the North Seattle drug trade.

He was not successful: Wright was arrested again on Feb. 11 of this year after he sold drugs to undercover officers in a number of sting operations. According to court filings, Wright boasted to a police informant that he "could never be caught or arrested, as he knew all of the tricks that police use to investigate drug dealers."

Funnily enough, the man who thought he was going to take over Seattle with a crew of dope dealing strippers was wrong.

High Protein Diets Make You Look Good, Kill You

Americans do not remember anything from chemistry or biology class, but they will damn sure buy anything that contains "protein," because I think it gives you muscles? Sadly, it appears that high protein diets may also cause you to die.

Yes, it is true that we may be "simplifying" the science here. But it is also true that you, the consumer, will tell your friends that you are eating a "healthy" high protein diet even though you are exclusively consuming "South Beach" candy bars. So who is the real villain here?

Back to the point we were making before we were so rudely interrupted: sure, cutting carbs is a great way to get "ripped" (assuming you are also exercising, which you are not). But it does have some drawbacks. The Wall Street Journal reports:

But will you live longer on a high-protein, low-carb diet? Two studies in the current edition of the scientific journal Cell Metabolism suggest the opposite. One involved an experiment conducted on mice, the other an 18-year study of humans who had divulged their dietary habits. Both studies found a strong association between longevity and a low-protein, high-carbohydrate diet, although the human study bore a twist: Beyond age 65, higher protein levels appeared to promote longevity.
I am shocked, shocked I tell you, to hear that an eating plan such as "The Atkins Diet" which condones eating nothing but steak and bacon for every meal may not be the most optimal choice for your long term health. (Here I am ignoring the interests of the elderly, as is the policy of the media.) This presents the average American with the following calculation, when it comes to eating lots of protein:

1. Look good, but

2. Die young.

"I'ma look good and die young!" exclaims the average American almost immediately, tipping over their Mtn Dew Code Red™ beverage as they spring from their reclining chair in delight. Sadly, the average American does not look good. You can see why this is such a thorny issue.

Man Calls 911 After "Hostile" 22-Pound Cat Traps Family in Bedroom

gu1uzja4ix1bqt1ga1lz.jpg

Sunday night, a man called 911 after his 22-pound cat attacked his baby and trapped his family—including their dog—inside a bedroom.

"[The cat] trying to attack us — he's very hostile. He's at our door; he's charging us," Lee Palmer told the 911 dispatcher. "When I leave this room to let the police in, I'm going to have to fight this cat."

The cat can be heard meowing throughout the call, according to the Oregonian.

Earlier in the evening, Palmer said the giant cat—a Himalayan—attacked his seven-month-old son, leaving him with scratches. Palmer chased the cat away, but that only made things worse.

"I kicked the cat in the rear, and it has gone over the edge," he told the dispatcher.

The family then barricaded themselves inside a bedroom and tried to call animal services. When that didn't work, they dialed 911. Portland police arrived not long after and trapped the cat with a snare. Everyone escaped unharmed.

"We are debating what to do," Palmer told the Oregonian the next day. "We definitely want to keep (the cat) away from the baby and keep an eye on his behavior. I swear I have never seen anything like it."

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2014/03/aggravated_cat_is_subdued_by_p.html

I always knew those pesky cats were trouble. You can hear the 911 call at the link, it's pretty funny. Did this guy not own anything he could just smack this cat upside the head with?

That's awesome. When my cats attacked me as a kid I just put a laundry hamper on them for a minute until they calmed down. I was six and they were mean suckers. :p

Black-Market Beautician Charged After Fatally Botched Butt-Lift

A New Jersey beautician has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a client who suffered a fatal reaction to a black-market silicone butt enhancement.

Tamira Mobley, 28, was seen on video checking into a pay-by-the-hour hotel in the Meatpacking District with her alleged client, 22-year-old mom and part-time college student Tamara Blaine. Two hours later, Mobley later returned to the front desk and told a hotel clerk to call 911.

Blaine was found with traces of silicone in her bloodstream and puncture marks in her buttocks, the New York Post reported. The official cause of her death was "a systemic silicone emboly due to a cosmetic silicone injection of the buttocks."

Blaine's mother, Lola, searched for her daughter for weeks before finally learning of her death when she got a bill from the morgue, she told the New York Daily News.

Mobley admitted to having been with Blaine that day, and the hotel room was paid for with Mobley's credit card, but she denied performing the injection.

The beautician has a student's license in cosmetology and hair styling, according to New Jersey records, and she told police she sells illegal cosmetics.

This is far from the first butt implant procedure gone wrong (although it's probably the most tragic). A fake doctor in Florida pled guilty to injecting "cement, 'Fix a Flat,' mineral oil, and superglue" into her patients, with horrifying results.

It's not just the unlicensed butt-lifts, either. Even common complications from legal butt implants can turn disastrous.

http://nypost.com/2014/03/11/beautician-killed-client-with-silicon-butt-injection-cops/

It amazes me that people will let people who probably didn't even graduate high school inject things into them.

This is problematic. I see a lot of reports about people injured, disfigured or die due to amateur cosmetics.

Miracle Vodka Saves Puppy From Poisoning

Charlie the Maltese nearly died of kidney failure after licking up antifreeze he found in the garage. Luckily, he was saved by the timely administration of a bottle of vodka.

Despite what your sophomore year in college might lead you to believe, the vodka was not used as an emetic. Apparently, liquor changes the chemistry of antifreeze and makes it easier to flush from the body, making it the antidote of choice in Australia. Back in January, another Aussie pup was saved with the same trick.

"He was stumbling around, I'd go to pat him and he'd push me away like a normal drunk person, he was vomiting a little, whining like a drunk," owner Jacinta Rosewarne told Australia's Herald Sun. "For the whole weekend, Charlie had a huge party with us in the Pet ICU," reports the blog for the local Animal A&E. Wait 'til Charlie gets a load of tequila!

Good to know for all you dog owners that have cars

So would you be arrested for giving a dog Vodka if it saves his life? Would that excuse work on people?

"I drink vodka to save myself from my crippling addiction to anti-freeze."

'Officer, it's not my fault I'm drunk. Those Anti-freeze and Vodka bottles look so similar I have to keep drinking both to stay alive!'

Origami Master Makes a Life-Size Elephant From a Single Sheet of Paper

n0kichzpsw9dz64xyd24.jpg

Origami artist Sipho Mabona just pulled off an incredible feat of paper folding, turning a single 50 foot by 50 foot sheet of paper into a life-size paper elephant standing more than 10 feet tall. It was no doubt a painstaking process, but watching the artist and his team in process is strangely soothing.

[YT]BXFTTidzVF8[/YT]

While this video by Shiso Productions doesn't take us all the way to the elephant's completion, it gives an interesting peek at the process—the entirety of which was live-streamed as part of the project. At points, Mabona needed up to 10 assistants to help fold giant swaths of the gargantuan sheet of paper.

The really fun part is seeing Mabona translate motions from the tiny sheet of paper in his hand, to the small-scale elephant model, to the 50-foot square of paper at his feet. It's about as close as we can get to peeking inside Mabona's mind, watching him figure out how to accomplish the next fold.

Mabona's project started out as an Indiegogo project, and is now on display at KKLB in Switzerland.

That is astonishing

I refuse to believe thats one sheet of paper. I don't care what the world says.

Pole Dancing Robots Are a Real Thing

f9ggl9yxwtmnygikug4v.gif

A slightly uncomfortable and awkward thing—are those security cameras as heads, for christ's sake?—but they're real thing nonetheless. Behold, German pole dancing robots. They cost $40,000 each.

Earlier versions of the robots were modified to have more color and to have bigger breasts, ultimately turning them into the robots you see above. I'm sure the nature of these improvements for early pole dancing robots sound very surprising to most of you.

There is one very weird fella out there right now who just got way too happy by this news
