I was talking in terms of the risks they took with the changes to updating the origins. It's not the same thing really. Stuff like that came out of an out and out reboot of the mainstream universe, this is a separate universe that'll run while the main universe goes, based on this hypothetical idea of what if these characters were literally created today. It's pretty much a copy and paste of what Marvel did with the Ultimate Universe concept.
Okay, but it's still not the same deal. What DC did with their origin stories in the 80s was the then definitive origins for the mainstream characters. Ultimate and Earth One are alternate versions of the character that run side by side. What DC did with those books you mentioned where in an entirely different league than the whole Ultimate/Earth One concept. It'd be more comparable if DC keep the main books going with the same continuity post-Crisis, but still had 'New Earth' going on the side with MOS and Year One being the origins for that world's version of Superman and Batman
Wheter or not it's the same deal, this is the comic equivalent of Superman Returns. Failson every level for me and wont sustain. It has a chance however because itseasier to redeem with good follow up stories but I'm skeptical.
Superman Earth One was a dreadfull emo version of the 'Lois & Clark' pilot. Didn't like the writing or the art. I'm not a Birthright fan but even that was better than Secret Origins and this garbage. Somewhat flawed MOS still remains the best. Season 1 of 'Lois & Clark' probably is still the best origin overall for Superman.
All executed badly making it extremely boring, just like Singerman. The mopiness of Clark also reminded me of that film too. Deffo the comic equivalent in how it has polarised opinion amongst the fans. Only time will tell on this one like it did with SR.Afraid not, he actaully has a worthwhile conflict in this, he hits something, kryptonite is no where in sight, neither is luthor, it's a nice change of pace even offering some fresh ideas such as those surrounding kryptonian tech. It's not a boring rehash of what's come before with little to no action. Nothing like Superman Returns.
Gotta agree with you on all of these. What this book did was made Superman more human (in a matter of speaking). I mean honestly if you had the powers of Superman it would be very hard not to use them for your own personal gain or to help out the family. The struggles he went through in that book is 9 out 10 the same struggles anyone of us would go through if we had his powers. I think it is a great book and look forward to the next volume as well as Batman: Earth One. I just wish they switched up the format though and made the origin a graphic novel then did the rest of the series monthly. I hate having to wait another year or two for a sequel.I got Earth One yesterday and read it immediately. I thought it was pretty damn good actually. I didn't find Clark to be emo at all, just understandably confused on where to go with these amazing powers in such a large city. The reasons for that are, IMO, extremely good ones too:
-Promising Johnathan that he would always take care of Martha before he died in his arms.-Having the option to take ANY job that could pay him millions (scientist, pro athlete, etc)Also, Metropolis wasn't exactly the most inspiring cities in this adaption.
Also, I may be in the minority from the reviews I've read, but I actually likedthe way Krypton was destroyed. It was different so I give that to JMS
Superman Earth One Sequel in the works. Not really a fan that JMS is delaying his Wonder Woman and monthly Superman arcs simply because of this, but hey business is business. I really can't wait to read this 2nd volume, since this should be *the* Man of Steel volume, not "Superman Begins".Here's hoping for Brainiac/Zod, i'd really like if they can kinda keep Lex Luthor and even more importantly: Plot Device Kryptonite as far as away from this.
From The Source:DC Comics has officially announced a sequel to the best-selling "Superman: Earth One" from the original's creative team of writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis in a move that will see the writer step back from his ongoing monthly comics work for the publisher.
Rich Johnston said:It cannot have escaped peoples notice that the Superman Earth One graphic novel has done rather well. Mass media attention, instant sell out, instant second print. And probably more prints to come.
The result of which, as I understand it, is that Babylon 5 creator Joe Michael Straczynski, the writer of Superman Earth One and both the Superman and Wonder Woman monthly books has decided that this is the future. And will conclude writing monthly titles for DC in favour of going the original graphic novel route for his future work for the company.
Isnt that a pip?
DC didnt choose to comment.
Just as long as pretty much no one else at DC agrees with him that OGNs are "the future." I take my comics in monthly periodical format, thankyouverymuch.![]()
you kidding? much as many, myself included, may hate it, ogn's ARE the future. just compare the crowd at your lcs to the crowd of kids standing around the manga/gn section of your book store.Just as long as pretty much no one else at DC agrees with him that OGNs are "the future." I take my comics in monthly periodical format, thankyouverymuch.![]()
