Simon West is in talks to direct Jason Statham in a reinvention of the 1972 Charles Bronson action classic The Mechanic, reports Production Weekly.

In the film, Bronson played Arthur Bishop, a mob hit man who operates in a world of his own an uncompromising world where conventional rules of morality don't apply and where one wrong move could cost him his life. He's always worked alone but, as age catches up with him, Bishop takes on a competent and ruthless apprentice (Jan-Michael Vincent) and teaches him everything he knows. Together they becomean unmatchable team of globetrotting killers until the pupil's ruthlessness puts him on a collision course with his teacher.

Michael Winner directed the original.

I liked the original, and though Ive got nothing against a remake Statham is no Bronson.

Playing a hitman/mob enforcer? Damn, will that ever be a stretch for him.

Wasn't there a remake with Dolph Lundgren already?

I quite like the original, and I quite like Jason Statham. But I just find this to be one of those unnecessary remakes. We'll see.

They do have a nice play with the posters:

No. It just had a similar name; The Mechanik.

Odd, too young to play the Bronson role, to old to play the Jean Vincent role.

I think I smell another team up with Stallone.

EDIT:

Holy crap, it's being directed by the Con Air guy! YES!

sounds fun but Statham plays the same roles over and over again.

So did Bronson, so it kind of evens out. Although you should check out Revolver, London and The Bank Job for some a-typical Statham performances.

You forgot Snatch and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.

Foster and Sutherland Join The Mechanic

Ben Foster and Donald Sutherland are set to co-star opposite Jason Statham in the remake of The Mechanic, reports Variety.

The film is being directed by Simon West and is set to go into production in the coming weeks in New Orleans.

In the film, Foster will play Steve McKenna, the young man who becomes an apprentice to a hitman played by Jason Statham. Sutherland will play the role of Foster's father and Statham's handler.

Surprisingly high quality casting.

Ben Foster! Nice.

New poster (well same as the first one, now with different text):

It's not working. I assume that's the old promo trailer that was going around. Sort of like that first Expendables one of thrown together footage before the film went to post.

Lets hope so, to just copy something that smart would be a waste, I'd like to see if they can come up with something just as good.

New trailer.

They've changed things up from the original to make the lead more human but it looks really cool, nice to see more of this kind of action film.

I love the novelty kills! As if you wouldn't see someone waiting for you at the bottom of your pool!

Kermode gave it a thumbs up but stated it wasn't as good as the Transporter movies.
Stathams pretty entertaining to watch on screen even if the movies he is in are junk, he deserves higher quility stuff imo.
