This is a thread about actors. I will probably start a seperate thread for Actresses, or if someone else wants to they can go on right ahead.

What actor, if any near definitively owned this decade in the manner of holding the spot light, awards, grossings, and quality?

I'm going to have agree with Entertainment Weekly (something i don't commonly do) and go with Johnny Depp

His films for better or for worse have made insane amounts of money, drew critical aclaim and garnere award nominations and wins. Jack Sparrow is one of the most memorable and widely recognized characters of this decade

Di Caprio must be mentioned due to the steady stream of quality stuff hes put out with Scorcese. I also really enjoyed catch me if you can.

After Lord of the Rings, which as we know all of them made insane cash, and many awards, Viggo Mortenson did a lot of lower profile but high quality roles. (on a random side note, he stared in what is recognized as the last major film released on vhs, just something i find interesting)

who else might you consider?

DiCaprio for me. He established himself as more than just a pretty boy and delivered some excellent performances.

I'd say Depp.
the guys a class act...while other celebrities are banging models and cheating on each other, doing drugs getting drunk whatever...he's dressing up as Jack Sparrow for sick children, donating a million dollars to a hospital being there for the fans.

Depp really sticks to his guns for his art.

Depp? Id definately go with dicaprio. Leo has redefined and redefined himself over and over again. Not to say Depp has't, but Leos work is normally more grounded and overall serious which is much harder to pull off then some of Depp's more zany antics. Obviously most of this has to do with marty, but especially considering Leo has two huge films and roles coming next year I am prolly gna have to go with him.So jacked for Shutter Island and Inception. Also Daniel Day has made some ridiculously riveting films when he gets out to do them. But honestly the only other male actor that I can consider is PS Hoffman. The man is a ****ing genious. As far as females go, that is a much tougher decision.

And yah Viggo is also just ****ing fantastic. He came out of no where and hasn't had a bad film or role since the LOTR. Eastern Promises is so ****ing insane. Also what about mister Josh Brolin, the man also reappeared out of thin air and hasnt stopped giving heartbreaking performances. Also gotta mention Clooney, he hasnt had a bad film since batman and robin. This is just getting too difficult.

As far as actresses go only one name really springs to mind. Kate Winslet, hands down.

I don’t know about quality, and I wouldn’t say he’s owned this decade, but someone whose name might deserve a mention, as he’s made quite a name for himself in the last decade, is Hugh Jackman.

In terms of celebrity I'd go with Johnny Depp or Will Smith. You never hear anything bad said about them. They're legit nice guys IMHO.

In terms of acting then Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon.

But I have to give a special mention to Jason Statham, he's gonna be the last old school hollywood legitimately tough guy we're gonna see for a while. He's just unlucky he's around in the time of Paul W.S. Anderson, Michael Bay and McG rather than the days of Sergio Leone, Peckinpah or even recent times of John McTiernan and (regularly working) James Cameron.

Personally Im a bit dissapointed of Depp's performances this decade. I loved him in the first Pirates movie. He was great as Jack Sparrow. Other than that, he hasnt been fantastic. His performances in the 90's were better imo.

I think it is between DiCaprio, Ledger, and Day-Lewis. The difference here is that the latter 2 have each 2 absolutely brilliant performances, while DiCaprio has a whole bunch of great ones but none on that level. I guess I'll pick...Ledger, for making 2 of my fav performances of the decade.

Leo..... The Departed, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, Catch Me if You Can. That's three Scorsese and one Speilberg flicks right there.

Daniel Day-Lewis is the best actor this decade but he doesn't have the catalogue or the quantity of movies that would see any award show give it to him.

That said, he's quite comfortably been the best actor this decade...

I'll mention Pitt too since nobody else here has, but I don't think he is the best of the decade... I just think he should get a mention if Bale and DiCaprio have...

Robert Downey Jr IMO

he's such an awesome actor

closely followed by Ewan McGregor

He is an awesome actor, and if there was a "Best Comeback" award he may well have managed to pinch it from Mickey Rourke, but I still say DDL is better.

I'm kind of suprised that no one has mentioned Daniel Radcliffe, Ian McKellen or Hugo Weaving. You can make whatever excuses you want, but the unknown Weaving has appeared in all three Matrix films, LOTR, Happy Feet, and both Transformers. Johnny Depp owes most of his star power to one franchise, and so does Radcliffe, and Radcliffe's franchise has made more money. The difference is that Radcliffe isnt also starring in movies that dont do as well since he's focused on films that dominate the box office.

Christian Bale leaps to mind immediately. He was goddamn brilliant in The Prestige and American Psycho. And I believe that he also played a famous superhero twice.
