he made only one movie where he got attention. and i know that he was nominated for the cowboy movie. those are still 2 movies. in no way is he the actor of this deacade.

I Actually am gonna have to agree with you on that... Though he was beyond amazing as joker, your right that that's not enough to own the decade

I think some people need to see some of his "lesser" films if they don't think he was one of the best.

But I'd agree he didn't "Own" this decade because it took a while for him to break out and be a real marketable option.

That in no way reflects his high level of competence as an actor though.

TDK and Candy
Imaginarium and Brokeback Mountain
Ned Kelly, The Brothers Grimm and Casanova
The Patriot, I'm not Here... The Sin Eater

He never bombed in anything he was in and if you watch his newer stuff was his better stuff as he was improving. Candy was in around 2006, The Dark Knight last year...

I wouldn't say he "owned" this decade, but he was setting himself up nicely to "own" the next one just as Depp had in the 90s... That's what made his death so tragic.

Quality, not quantity!

Personally I didn't think so.

I thought it was actually pretty "run of the mill" forbidden romance kind of stuff only it featured homosexuality as the forbidden fruit and Hollywood lapped it up.

Didn't like Heath's accent in it either.

I'd very much recommend watching Candy if you can though, to see him doing some real good work.

Dan in Candy is the only thing I think he's done which could come close to being competitive with his Joker... and the Joker will always be more memorable...

His performance in Brokeback is my second fav of the decade after Day-Lewis in TWBB. It completely overshadows his Joker.

Ledger... because of Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight. ANd he was also great in Lords of Dogtown and Candy. Leo is second. And Depp is boring...

Matt Damon, Will smith, Johnny Depp, Leo Dicaprio, Christian Bale.

In that ordeh. LOL @ these Heath Ledger mentionss.

To each their own I guess.

Eric Bana's accent completely took me out of Hulk in what was an otherwise quality cerebral portrayal that would have been a front running character portrayal in a comic book film...

Accents can have a big effect on me.

Its why I take issue with how the Oscars give their Best Foreign Film award... Its voted on by people who have very little frame for reference. Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's main three characters are all meant to be from the same region yet due to the actors being from different regions and being more "mainstream" actors who didn't really attempt the regional accents its viewed very differently by those from outside to those who are actually from the region. Its essentially like grabbing Jeff Foxworthy, Tom Arnold and Liam Neeson having all three talk normally for a film set in New York...

I could understand how that could take a viewer out of the experience.

Gotta go with Bale.

The guy kicked off 2000 in a big way by playing Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, and if that didn't make him a household name, being cast as Batman sure the hell did. In addition to the Batman films ... movies like The Prestige, Rescue Dawn, 3:10 to Yuma, and Equilibrum are not too shabby either. I like the Machinist as well, and thought he was good as a villain-you-love-to-hate in Shaft. :D

Gah! I forgot about Lords of Dogtown!

Underrated performance... and not just because I forgot about it... :hehe:

Says the one that think Matt Damon, Will Smith, and Christian Bale are the best of the decade. :whatever:

In fairness if it comes down to catalogue, Matt Damon's is pretty impressive and fleshed out with a lot of quality well-grossing films.

I don't think he's been the best actor of the decade, but being the best actor and "owning" the decade aren't the same thing.

Let me guess. You're talking about box-office?

In a way I guess...

What I'm saying is that of those 3 guys only Christian Bale can I not see an argument for "owning" the decade.

If you look at it strictly from a box office perspective Will Smith could "own" the decade... personally, I think that's a pretty crap way of looking at it but its an argument.

If you look at it in terms of catalogue for the whole decade I think Damon at least has a shot... I mean The Bourne Identity wasn't exactly a huge thing the first time it was done, I don't think it was THAT big a chance because I know Greengrass is a damn good director so it would at least be watchable, but Damon didn't exactly go jumping at surefire hits either.

Bale meanwhile, whilst in my opinion being a better actor than the other two, is clearly not "the best" or front runner in any way shape or form. In terms of being an actor Daniel Day Lewis is better (much the same as Heath Ledger), in terms of being marketable he had a bit too late a start on the decade (also much the same as Heath Ledger)...

See the fantastic performances are a major factor in this, as is the total number, but what must go along with that is pulling the rest of the world with you. Hugo weaving is fanstastic, sneaks in all over the place but when he has a movie out you don't exactly see his face plastered everywhere you know?

Johnny Depp on the other hand make headlines when he so much as hints at a possible role, and most of his performances though i think they've gone down hill. I was actually dissapointed in his Dillinger.
