What actor was Marvel's best recast?

That's right! A different actor as Pyro had a brief cameo in X-Men 1. I think he was goofing around in class in the scene where we first meet Bobby Drake, right?

To me, for a recast to count in this, it can't be a change of a cameo character to a more important role (Ellen Page as Kitty Pride for example) or between movie series' (Sally Field as Aunt May or Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy). Also, this should not include instances like Michael Fassbender as Magneto, because that film took place over 30 years before the original, essentially a prequel.

It has to be a recast within the same universe and timeline.

That being said, I would say the biggest differential from one performance to the next was Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth. Tyler Mane was poor, even in the terrible role that was written for him. Schreiber was the only redeeming quality from XMO:W.

Mark Ruffalo was great as Banner/Hulk, but not much better than Norton. Norton was also very good. Same goes for Terrance Howard/Don Cheadle.

Schreiber all the way.
I pretty much agree with everything but the boldface quotes are most on point.

It's been a while since I've seen it but was Punisher: War Zone considered a loose sequel or a soft reboot? Frank Castle was the only character in both movies if I'm not mistaken.

Oh, so he was in a similar boat as the two previous Kitty Pride before Ellen Page too over.

i can't give Fox any credit on this because of their awful first castings. they basically just slapped familiar names on to random characters; w/o any thought to future usage of said-character. anyone remember Sebastian Shaw from the first movie (talking head on the tv)? the lame Henry Peter Gyrich? why bother even using Trask's name for Bill Duke?

I don't know what I would consider War Zone in regards to The Punisher (2004). I would list it closer to a reboot than a sequel personally. They're completely different casts, stories, film styles, budgets, etc etc etc. It's more like "another attempt." :yay:

Sounds about right. Slightly off subject, I'd like to see Thomas Jane reprise this role as the Punisher on Agents of SHIELD especially since he already did it in the Dirty Laundry short.

Iron Man 3 solidified Cheadle for me; Ruffalo is a close second. I'd like to see what he does with his own flick.

Personally I think this thread should have included all recaps since the first X-Men and that includes the reboots.

If we were counting reboots my answer would be Andrew Garfield in a heartbeat, that guy is the Spider-Man I always wanted to see in live action.

But since we're not and this was tough but I have to say Michael Fassbender as Magneto. I know that film has a different cast but its still set in the same universe as the previous films.

Mark Ruffallo as Bruce Banner is a close second and just behind him is Liev Screiber as Sabretooth.

I'll agree with psylockolussus about Sabertooth, with ease
Does someone like Michael Fassbender count, or is that different because he's playing a younger version of the character?
Won't they both appear in days of Future past? Fassbender and McKellen?

Does Emma Stone count? Probably 10x better than the previous Gwen Stacy.
No reboots
