Superman Returns What could have made Superman Returns better

Make Jason the Eradicator and have him try to turn the earth into New Krypton. That would have been a good ending for the movie superman fighting his son now a cold unfeeling alien that wants to bring back a dead world. Have the FOS start to grow covering more and more land and maybe even have Crystals start to grow out of the other parts of the world. Make it a race for superman to stop, hell you could even have superman rip the FOS out of the earth and throw it into space.

I love the film. But for starters a new suit could have made the reception a bit more positive.

Removing the ugly filter and condensing the overly long conversations and situation plays in between action scenes could help SR a long way.

I love this movie! I got goosebumps watching it the other day.

I just don't understand why the same posters waste their time complaining about this movie 5 years later.

Growing up in the late 70 early 80s Superman was really my first superhero. While I enjoy STM and the other films in that series I was looking forward to a new reboot with state of the art effects and a Superman that would be a lot closer to the one I enjoyed reading in the comics. I was very disappointed with the way he was portrayed in SR. In many ways it’s similar to the Hulk. I was exposed early to that character form the TV show, and I was very disappointed with the first Hulk movie. Thankfully they hired some actors and a director that understood and respected the character and made a quick reboot. It looks like the same is finally happening to Superman.

I thought that Superman was well portrayed in Superman Returns. At first I didn't really like the whole sick kid being Superman's son and I still sort of lean to a humming about that. But I firmly think they handled it the best they could and I absolutely adored the way Clark was put in. Maybe they could've done more with the Clark character.

To be honest, I'm sick and tired of all these reboots. I'm completely done with them. I just read about they're doing a Spiderman reboot. What the...?

Hmmm...
Superman not leaving Earth for such an idiotic reason
A better actress to play Lois
Not telling Brandon to mimic Christopher, but instead let him be his own actor and play his own Superman.

What's so idiotic about Superman going back to find if there's anything left from his home world? I think it was a legimit reason. He's the only one left of a civilisation that died with his sending to earth. I can understand the need to find out where you're coming from.

I agree that Kate Bosworth wasn't the best choice for Lois. True, I have a personal vendetta against her, but after seeing the movie (a couple of times, because I like to watch movies more than once, because the first time you miss certain things that happen), I thought she did a good enough job. I'm not sure who I would've liked to have seen as Lois. But certainly not Amy Adams (in the upcoming Man of Steel movie)!!

I thought Brandon Routh DID make the role his own. Sure, the makers of the movie wanted a wink back to Christopher Reeve's Superman in the 70s and 80s movies, with the curl and all, but I think Routh did a good job and he made Superman very likeable and human.

The problem is he was specifically told by his father that the planet is dead! Why be so stupid as to take the word of a bunch of random scientists who are millions of light years away. Leaving Earth (which he claimed to never do again at the end of SII) off of a hunch from a bunch of scientists and not taking the time to do your own research, go back to the FOS and do some extra-terrestrial research and ask daddy wth is going on is downright stupid. What's even more stupid is coming back and being upset that your girlfriend didn't wait for you when you never even told her you were leaving.
As for Brandon he was playing Christopher Reeves as Superman and especially Clark; he took his mannerisms, even his jokes, and quite honestly sucked the life out of them. Again I don't blame Brandon, I blame Brian Singer for wanting to redo Superman 1978.

Well, his father died before the world was destroyed and when he 'recorded' the message the world wasn't gone yet. So technically he couldn't have known if the planet was actually gone. So I think it still justifies what Superman did. But still, he was a jerk for not saying goodbye.

My impression was, in the movie, that he wasn't sulking about Lois having another man, but more that she had turned against him, winning a Pulitzer for the article she wrote, why the world doesn't need him.

superman returns would have been better if the film had started with the new krypton scene i mean it was a total waste of money by not showing that scene in the theatrical version and kate bosworth was a awful lois lane she had no heart or soul in the role margot kidder and erica durance are much better as lois lane then bosworth was in this film. and i think james marsden was just cast because he had worked with singer before and the film should not have been about superman returning i think singer could have thought of a little bit better story then he ended up making.

Superman holds a press conference, he announces that he is leaving to investigate if any survivors of Krypton are left. He explains that he picked up some signals from there.
He says his goodbyes to Lois.

Replace the mansion scene of Lex and the old lady with the RTK scene. Show that Lex is responsible for tricking superman into leaving.

Lex still breaks into the FOS to steal the crystals, but it would have been to make weapons and new tech. No mention of real estate would have been heard.

In superman's absence, Lex creates all kinds of new inventions and weapons. He sells them off to the highest bidders. Lex gets extremely wealthy and forms Lex-Corp.

Lex grows paranoid. He fears superman will return at anytime, so he creates a bodyguard that can go toe to toe with Supes, Metallo.
Lex also forms intergang and outfits them with hightech weapons. No police force on earth has the firepower that they possess.

Most of the people in Metropolis embraced lex as their new hero at first, but now they fear him. Lex uses intergang to confront any opposition to him, they kill with no mercy. He also uses them to control the drug flow into the east coast and to control big business. Lex gets richer while his rivals disappear.

Lex's paranoia grows. He orders more assassinations. The police are powerless to stop him, as is the military. Metallo crushes any attempts made.

A true police state in Metropolis starts to form. Things get desperate for normal civilians. hardly no food, no money.
Posters of Lex are up everywhere in Metropolis as he sets his sites on the whitehouse. Lex sends in metallo. The military falls first, then the goverment.

Lex walks into the whitehouse and sits in the oval office. He leans back and smiles. The country is his.

Russia, china, france, and britian demand that Lex step down or face the consequences. A massive fleet of ships from the different countries are inbound. War is on the Horizon.

At this point Superman returns, and its to a world that desperately needs him.

Completely agree with all of this, Bosworth wasnt that bad, despite being mis-cast, and Routh, while paying homage to Reeve, also brought his own little nuances to the role and it was different enough to feel fresh for me.

Also, about the bolded part, can I ask why?

Yes you can, you already have. ;)

The thing I have against her is not really explainable. I've seen some movies she stars in and she really doesn't do a bad job. But it's just her vibe, her being, for a lack of a better word her aura. She just rubs me the wrong way. I've seen her in interviews and she just seems snobbish enough for me to not like her.

True, it started out when I was a bit younger, sort of still in my 'teen obsession' phase (and I was already in my 20s! How sad is that!) when she was dating Orlando Bloom, and I was sort of obsessed with him. And then that passed and I kept disliking her for the reasons above.

Whenever I see her it's just a feeling of 'blah, I really don't like her!'

Well, that's my story.

^Ha ha fair enough, as a teen I hated Di Caprio, but now love him in movies, think he is a great actor, but I am 29 so well beyond my teens.

Yeah, I'm well beyond my teens as well. Just the dislike for her does not go away... hehehe...

Ha ha fair enough, she actually seems a decent person to me in real life judging from interviews, etc.

Yeah, well, you know what it is. Most actors/singers etc. aren't as bad as the press makes us believe they are.

Anyway, back to topic. What could've made Superman Returns better?

Another thing that I just thought of; I'm pretty sure that Clark and Lois had a much closer (partner) relationship than just; "Hey welcome back" and the awkward kiss. Just a little bit more depth and screen time together would've been nice.

How about a better producer is the same producer that kept saying thank God for Bryan Singer God bless him bla bla bla. He is the main producer tight he as all the say on who and how a superman movie gets made I think hes the one who should get dropped. How can you say you love this movie and how great a job and the perfect direction their taking and then go ah maybe not but I have my own theory about that oh yeah and why does this guy not get any flap they blame the writers director and actors how about this guy

 (on the bolded part)

watch the behind the scenes to SR you'll see this guy say how great the movie is and Singer at a primer

No kid
No fiance
No Bosworth
No land related plan for Lex Luthor
No pathetic sidekicks for Lex
No christ like imagery
No repetition of the line 'The son becomes the father, the father the son'
No copy catting of the feel of the 70s film

More lines for Clark and Superman, and less pensive staring
More respect between Lois and Clark
A more threatening Lex Luthor
More idea of what the public were feeling

Just to say, after all that negativity. I liked Brandon Routh, felt he had a very Supermanly vibe to him. I loved the scene were he's beaten by Luthor and then saved by Lois. Like the visuals on the plane scene and the getting shot in the eye.

I agree with everything you said but liking the scene where Luthor beats Superman. It was cheesy, and the fact that Luthor stabs Sups and actually penetrates his suit and body with Kryptonite was all that more ridiculous.

BTW, I seen you say you did not care that much for Reeve as Sups, but that you liked Routh. Just wondering which one you prefer in the roll? I do find it a bit odd that you say this as Routh was basically mimicing Reeve's portrayal.

:)
