Iron Man What Didn't You Like?

Plenty I didn't Like:

Iron Man just really wasn't a great climatic movie. That will always doom it for me, no matter how many people thought it worked and said it "kicked ass".

The movie had way too many dumb moments. I loved how it started out, and his idea to build a suit out of the cave was great. He started throwing people against the walls and he looked like an unstoppable machine. The problem is, that was the highlight of the movie!

As soon as he started flame throwing people and took off to fly right away, i just looked at my friend and we started laughing. It was far too soon and too over the top to put into a "realistic" superhero movie. I admit I'm a Batman lover, but Batman Begins was also far from a perfect movie. But at least Begins sold me on Batman being in a real world setting.

Tony Stark had the potential to do the same thing, but his suit was too over the top from the beginning to take seriously. It really took me out of the movie. If they built it up to him getting more and more gadgets on it, I would have bought it a lot better.

The other scene that had great potential was when he was learning how to control his flying in the garage. Then he decides to fly up in the sky and freeze himself and almost kill himself in the process. That is the kinda stuff that doesn't need to happen in a superhero movie, the hero almost killing himself but lucks out because everything works for him at the last sec( like his suit coming back to life). But then you learn it all had a purpose, it was a big set up for the final scene where he tries to destroy the villain by freezing him.

That was one of the poorest decisions in superhero movie history in my mind. Why would you take a big fight scene and then have two guys flying next to each other trying to fly as high as possible, how anticlimatic can you get? Then there is no resolution, except for the girl bailing him out at the end. It just wasn't thrilling, it didn't make me want to say, you kickass Iron Man! It was such a lackluster ending. I just don't know how people could come away from this movie thinking it was awesome. It did the total opposite for me.

In comparison, I thought the 3rd act of Batman Begins was also poor: Much too big without any emotional element. However, the scene on the rooftop to end the movie with Gordon was exciting. It made you happy Batman movies were back and you couldn't wait to see what happens next. Iron Man never did that for me, very subpar in my mind.

And it's a shame, because I thought Robert Downey and Paltrow played off each other nicely, they have good chemistry. But whenever the movie tried to go big, it failed miserably.

like every one else tramsformation was rushed.

and i wanted more action, trailer made it seem like non-stop action.

EDIT: one other thing the chopper just comes out of nowhere to rescue stark?

IMO i think TDK will be much better, with lots of respect to Iron Man, i really liked it.

My only complaint is that they did the 'too powerful repulsor' joke twice in a row.

In reference to the above post. If TDK isn't far better than Iron Man, I'll be really disappointed. I trust Nolan though, he knows how to make a serious superhero flick.

I was disappointed in the final battle, it was all pretty much straight forward and didn't contain that much action imo. I also wasn't impressed with Iron Monger, physically appearance and capabilities yeah really good but Obidiah was just too cliche in his performance for my liking. That's one of the reasons why I'm looking forward to TIH's final battle, less talking more fighting :woot:.

Best Super Hero movie I've seen Thus far!

I would have liked to see a couple more scenes with the MkII.

Other than that,

-good acting
-great script
-believable plot (as far as superhero movies go)
-amazing special effects
-Gwyneth Paltrow's hottness!
-even a few humerous moments

Hats off to Jon Favreau for excellent directing!

And its over 2 hrs long, which, unlike most is always a bonus in my book.
I hate some of these movies that are only 89 mins.

Stuff that bugged me:

-Not totally convinced by Tony's epiphany & decision to change his ways after being in captivity. Felt rushed.

-Basically the thing that really cements the decision to become Iron Man in his mind is the news footage of the village destroyed by his bombs. Then he goes there and never really connects with the people he went there to help in any personal way. I would have liked to see more of that to give it some emotional depth.

-The Iron Monger fight at the end, no emotional weight or pay-off to that fight. Not that invested in that duel. It's that famous Shakespeare quote from Macbeth & the same problem I had with last year's 'Transformers' movie: 'Full of sound & fury, signifying nothing.'

-Much of the seemed derivative of other earlier Marvel films: i.e.:
The direct rip-off of the freezing/falling jet scene from Hulk '03.

-Iron Monger battle looks eerily similar to the scene from Hulk '08 teaser trailer--hope they don't repeat themselves again and Hulk gets the blame.

-Took too long to clearly define Stark's motivations and to give an explanation of what exactly he planned on doing with the suit once he built it. Not until he donned the Mark III and Tony watching the newscast about the village did we finally get to see what he was actually going to do with the suit to stop evil in the world.

-The leaps he makes in handling the suit seemed rather easy.

-The generic, dumb as a box-o-rocks, cookie-cutter terrorist villains who didn't know Tony wasn't really building their missile until it was too late, even though they were watching him the whole time on a video camera.

-The chest plate being pulled out making him weak? didn't understand that. Shouldn't removing that have killed him instantly, not made him weaker since the electro-magnet was keeping the schrapnel from entering his heart?

-The flight in the suit scenes sometimes not filmed so well. SR suffered the same fate.

-It wanted to straddle the line between camp and seriousness and I'm not sure it was entirely successful trying to walk that line. It came off as confused and schizophrenic at times to me.

-I think the movie is generally overrated, good but not great, IMO.

First off given how may suits iron man has, really how could the suit in the film be totally 100% ? I mean artist like the cheat with the suit as well.

Personally Iron man being chummy with the locals would have been corny. He doesnt need to befriend, just know that their safe for now.

I dont know about the freezing thing. I mean it was an exploited weakness of the suit. I mean just because they went all the way up doesnt seem cheap.

They way i saw it, Tony always planned to be Iron Man. But when he truely became aware of the situation(his stuff was being sold under the table), he had to up the timetable.

Iron Monger is a big guy and big guys can run just like everyone else. I dont what was wrong with the Iron Monger charging Iron Man. Cant suit bullets forever.

The terrorist are not scientist(because then they would have done it themselves). Stark also made the suit in components. Everything just seemed to be part of the missile. It wasnt put together til the end. Though remember it was also their suspicion that forced Stark to escape the next day.

The Chestplate keeps the metal pieces from damaging his heart further. The scientist dude made mention that Stark may have lasted a week without the device. So Tony has now been paralyzed and metal pieces may be moving further into his heart. But they arent just gonna move instantly. Since Stark was able to remove the device earlier without becoming weak(when pepper did the switch), I think it was just Tony being paralyzed that put him down.

Now i just didnt like having to wait till after the credits for the damn Fury scene. Serious its alright when you got it on dvd but sucks if you gotta get the hell outta the theater.

Just two things:

1. Rushed third act. Didn't really enjoy the final battle with Iron Monger.

2. Personally, I felt that the score (or lack thereof) wasn't memorable. I mean, yes the rock soundtrack does fit with Tony's personality, but every good superhero movie I've seen has always had a memorable theme. I felt Iron Man didn't really have its own.

Other than those two details, a fantastic film!:yay:

The only thing I didn't like about Iron Man was the score. John Powell or Favreau's preferred choice of John Debney would've been better selections.

I've expressed this exact same opinion...the score was weak...soundtrack selections were fine...but some of the best (action) moments could have been enhanced by a more dramatic score and instead it just sounded corny.

how the hell did Pepper Potts survive that humongous explosion at the end?

How come they didn't hire John Debney since he is Favearu's choice?

The only thing that I didn't like was the decision to have to Stark out himself at the end of the film. Other than that, Favreau hit the nail right on the head.

i wouldve liked more cowbell...but other than that, really well done.

Well in the comics Tony's identity as Iron Man is public knowledge. Also, its just another reason Iron Man sets itself apart from other super hero movies. At the end of other movies, the characters keep their identities a secret with one or two people finding out. I thought it was awesome how he just announced it to the world.

i wasn't too thrilled to see the same "too high altitude" scenario like they used in The Hulk. it's been done.

Would it be wrong for me to say I can't point out anything I dislike?

This is honestly the most balanced SH movie I think I've seen. The pacing is fantastic imo. It's certainly right up there with BB.

Word is Marvel Studios' CEO pushed hard for Hans Zimmer or one of his Media Ventures co-horts, and they eventually agreed on Ramin Djawadi.

LOL! Oh man, that was my chuckle of the day!

Anyway, really nothing that bad about it for me. I agree the action was weak, but I guess they wanted to focus more on the origins, being taken hostage and stuff as well as the construction of the suit. I'm hoping more action in the sequel! And oh my, Paltrow's acting during the battle was atrocious! The rest was fine though.

Terrence Howard's voice. He just sounded very soft.

They did go with the bodyguard cover story for 40 years in the comics. And while I think doing it did set it apart, and that is probably the reason they went with it, I wish they had waited until the end of the second film.

Favreau’s acting as Hogan….glad that his scenes were short, congrats to the director on that decision.:hehe:
