hey all,

for those of you who are more knowledgeable about Supes than me, I had a question......

What exactly fuels Superman's powers?

Is it just the energy from our Yellow Sun?

Can Superman absorb other forms of energy?

For example, in the comics, Supes often travels to distant planets or galaxies, where he doesn't have a yellow Sun to feed off of. How is Supes able to use his powers in those situations? Does he simply absorb other kinds of energy?

thanks.....

Well, Superman is like a battery powered by solar energy. However, Supes must be able to retain some of that power, as he can fly at night. Also, in many comics (as well as the cartoon and SR) Supes is shown using a suit when flying in outer space.

One thing I've believed if that, if Supes was close to another galaxy with a yellow sun, he'd have his powers as he does on Earth.

he wears a suit in space for oxygen purposes

ok....but can Supes absorb other forms of energy, besides solar energy?

Perhaps ambient cosmic energy?

Do you think his cells would "adapt" and absorb other forms of energy, if he were placed in a different environment?

He did have the "electrical" thing for a while and absorbed all forms of that, but I didn't read it (thank god :yay:) so I'm not sure how it was explained. All I saw of it was in Morrisons JLA.

Other than that I think he only absorbs solar energy and stores it like a battery so he can use it when it's dark or out in space.

Oh God, Superman Red and Superman Blue. The horror. :(

The sun.

"The big yellow one is the sun..."

kudos to anyone who gets that.

There's stars throughout space. I suppose as long as he's near a star younger than a red one, he'll absorb enough energy to stay powered.

ok, thanks guys and gals.....

now, if a villian caused an extended solar eclipse.......would that render Superman powerless, since it's blocking his power source?

Has that ever been done in the comics?

Do you think Superman's cells would learn to "adapt" and absorb other forms of energy, in the absence of sunlight?

thanks....

There has been a load of theories behind the source of Superman's powers. The most commonly used is the sun, that under kryptons red sun the kryptonians adapted to absorb as much of that energy so when supes come into contact with a younger sun he absorbs a hell of a lot of energy. If you blocked out the sun he would still be as powerful until he used up all that energy. Kinda like a giant battery. If his body really is solar powered then it's doubtful he could adapt to absorb another kind of energy atleast not very quickly.

There is another theory that attributes some of superman's powers to the sun and his ability to absorb it. The other is that krypton was under a heavy gravity, one almost a thousand times that of earths. So kryptonian physiology adapted to be able to move normally. So when supes comes to earth all his natural abilities are increased a thousand times.

And dont even ask about his flight lol there was a documentry on television here in the uk around the time of the Superman Returns movie and it detailed how Superman could exist today explained scientifically. I think it is available in the states though

If I am not mistaken, his strength is also partly reliant upon his molecular structure, too.

It did happen in the books.I beleave it was a cross over event called endless night and he did not adapt or absorb other kinds of energy. His powers returned some time later.

Logically, no. Superman has been storing solar energy for 25-30+ years so even if he wasn't getting his daily dose of solar radiation, he should be fine for quite awhile.

Possibly, I believe if he was in the presence of any type of electromagnetism, his body would absorb it. Now how is body will react is up for debate.

I know this doesn't relate that well but, How powerful is superman?

I was simply wondering because SBP killed E2 Superman, who in COIE was shown to have at least Silver Age Superman powers (when he was tossing asteroids at the AntiMonitor and such) and our Superman (who used to be E1 Superman if I followed COIE correctly) was able to knock out SBP.

Now, if SBP is powerfull enough to kill E2 Superman, and our Superman can knock him out, does that mean our Superman is back to the planet moving power levels?
