what "great" critically acclaimed films have put you to sleep?

I will never understand the love this movie got.

J-Law, largely. Horrible actress.

As for some films:

The Dark Knight Rises
The LEGO Movie
2001: A Space Odyssey

I don't really watch films that I think will be boring, however those films I didn't expect to be so annoying.

The Martian.

I know for a certainty that I ain't sitting my ass through all four hours of Gone With the Wind.

What I'm curious about is what possessed them to make a four hour movie in an era where a two hour movie was probably considered too long.

I find Lord of the Rings to be really boring and tedious.

2001: A Space Oddyssey. Still cannot sit through it.

Quite the opposite. Back in those day,s going to the movies was an all day affair. Gone with the Wind was rolled out as a roadshow.

V was always the hero.

He fought a genocidal, bigoted and authoritarian government because they tortured and victimized not only himself but countless others.

If you see him as the villain then I can see why you disliked the movie.

Anonymous is inconsistent because it has no centralized authority. And just because they challenge authority doesn't mean they're a terrible group. Sometimes authority needs to be challenged.

Having said that there's no proof groups like anonymous would cease to exist without the Guy Fawkes mask.

Notice in my post I said that the movie is not the reason why those groups exist but the film is the most prominent display of their philosophies in popular culture.

The film certainly does treat V as a heroic figure. That's exactly what I'm pointing out. That's the thematic disconnect with the source material.

I... I honestly don't think you understood a single part of my post.

Thor
The English Patient
Bridesmaids (I hated this one)
Cinderella live action (overacting and Cinderella was an idiot)

Watched Silver Linings Playbook the other night and just couldn't get into it. Googled it afterwards and was surprised to see it labeled as a romantic comedy...I didn't laugh at all.

It was considered that epic films had to be long. The book was already big, so they wanted to make an "event film". If you look at previous epics, you can see that 3-4 hours was considered normal. Just look at Birth of a Nation, which held the title of highest grossing film before Gone with the wind.

I'm sure to many people at the time, length might have also helped people feel like they were getting their money's worth.

Plays and operas have intermissions for a reason. Being that film evolved that well...

When films were starting they were short, no sound or very little. So when something big came along --an event like mentioned above -- everybody would go out to see it since the producers sunk a lot of money into it. It was considered special and the like.

I very, very rarely fall asleep during movies, the few times it does happen is almost always with a film I’ve already seen. If a film bores me I’ll just turn it off or stick through it. I only fall asleep if I’m abysmally tired. The only recent films in the theater I’ve fallen asleep to are Spring Breakers and Assassin’s Creed. Both were because I’d been up for near 24 hours and just couldn’t stay awake. Spring Breakers I still really enjoyed but I missed a good 20+ minutes of the second act, but Assassin’s Creed was pure garbage and the few minutes I missed didn’t make any difference.

Now, popular films that bored me are numerous. Any film by David O. Russell, Tom Hooper or Innaritu. Most Sophia Coppola films. Most of Spielberg’s recent output (as well as A.I.). Gone With The Wind. The Grifters. American Honey. I’ll concur with The Martian. All of the recent live-action Disney cartoon remakes. La La Land. Rogue One.

Not afraid to be in the minority and say I thought this was insufferable.

John Wick. Missed the entire 3rd act. Not because it was boring I guess I was really tired. Bought the movie on blu ray and I can't wait for the sequel.

I think there is confusion between references to the movie and the original graphic novel its based upon. In the movie he is treated as a hero who fought against the government for the oppressed. In the original graphic novel he was just a terrorist out for revenge who didn't care about anyone else.

"Arrival" knocked me out. It felt like nothing was really happening, for some reason.

I woke up when they got to the big twist.
