I was thinking about this earlier and just wondered what IF the history of the 4 first big films were different or reversed!?!?

What IF WB started with campy Batman with some dark edge in '89 that later basically became B&R?And from there get a bit darker with BF instead of Returns and then FINALLY go all dark&more serious in the late 1990's with Burton instead of'89&'92!

B'89/B&R-Being in the cheesy campy style&late 80's..I think there could have been a chance Steve Guttenberg or David Hasselhoff would have been Bruce/Batman,The villain would likely have been Joker and I think Robin Williams would have gotten the role,I think the film would have had a smaller budget than Burton's But still much bigger than 60's!!

Batman Returns/Forever-IF that first movie I described had happened&actually be successful..I think most of the cast&characters would return including Joker,IF they still wanted to go the Forever route then story could have been Joker breaking down Batman mentally&emotionally where he's about to quit..Pretty much like TDK But much less gritty/serious&cool!!

BF/Burton-In late 90's IF WB decided to go full dark&serious in a reboot and still go for Burton&IF he still had the same career success..I think the budget would have been almost B'89&BR combined,I doubt Burton would still have been interested in Keaton by that point and so we'd likely have Johnny Depp as Bruce/Batman!!

After that Batman Begins could very well have been the sequel or a third film for Burton,Instead of new origins we could have had Dark Knight Returns or something!!

All that could have changed how we got shaped up as fans,I was 3 or 4 yo when B'89 came out and I instantly became hooked on everything Batman and into comics when Returns came out,As a kid I loved watching reruns of the 60's show But IF B'89 had been B&R and Returns had been Forever..I'd be a fan But would not have checked out the comics until the Burton films,Although I loved Forever as a kid and still kinda enjoy it..It just wouldn't had been the same!!!!

Other stuff would have been different too,Keaton without the role could be having an even much worse career right now/Jack would still have a great career But would not be loved as Joker/The animated series would likely not have been as awesome:(But instead being more like"The Batman" !!

I've always said, if B&R didn't exist, we probably wouldn't have the Nolan films.

We didn't have Nolan films because of B&R or thanks to B&R but in spite of it.

What I mean is that if B&R weren't so bad, then Schumacher would have made another film. It's very possible they would have continued that same franchise. Hell if B&R pulled in good numbers and was at least the same level of BF we might still be getting Batman 8 from the Burton/Schumacher world in a James Bond type way instead of a new series.

Had B&R not bombed and been hated so much, it would have been followed up with Batman 5 (remember Schumacher wanted Harley and Scarecrow, etc)

Maybe not. The old franchise had to end eventually I don't think it would have gone on past 2000.

eh,don't count on that...before B & R opened,WB activelly pursued Schumacher to make Batman Triumphant, with Clooney back, Robin gone, Jeff Goldblum as the Scarecrow, Jenny McCarthy as Harley Quinn , and Jack Nicholson reprising his role as the Joker for some fear gas-enduced nightmares in Batman's mind...if successful, while i don't necessarily think Schumacher or Clooney would be back for a Batman 6 , i could definitely see WB going ahead with at least one more...they desperately wanted it to be a franchise that kept going....hell,even after B & R "bombed" - though "bombed is kind of NOT the way to put it,as it made $240 million on a $125 million budget - they still wanted Schumacher to go ahead with the 5th Batman for a little while, before abandoning all plans for it....so they weren't giving up this particular franchise/continuity easily...
