The Amazing Spider-Man What if Sony sells the film rights?

Suppose we do get Spider-Man in the Avengers series. What then? Then this is Spider-Man folks, not Peter Parker. That removes a good chunk of what makes the character great right there. You cannot adequately focus on the inner struggles of Parker and his heroics as Spider-Man in an ensemble film without it leading to complaints that this is more like 'Spider-Man 4' than 'The Avengers 2.'

Not to mention, and this is something I say on a purely personal level, Spider-Man works better isolated. In the comics, yeah, great, he's one of many magnificent heroes. That's great, but I prefer my Spider-Man to be the exception. There's nothing special about a kid getting super powers and taking justice into his own hands if there is so much precedent. Much like Batman, Spider-Man is far more compelling as the only one of his kind.

Who doesn't want that?

Not me. I love Spider-Man, but I'd rather not get character fatigue from his appearing that much across a wide variety of films.

No they sold the merchandising rights to boost their third quarter figures. Whomever bought the merchandising rights will have them until they no longer want them. I am sure Sony still has some say in the product line like for instance Marvel couldn't buy it and then make awful toys to bring down the movie.

Well, here's the answer...

Disney says:
Sony Pictures will release The Amazing Spiderman. We're excited about the film and expect it will drive significant benefits for Spiderman consumer products.

To that end, we recently completed a transaction with Sony Pictures to simplify our relationship. And then in the deal, we purchased Sony Pictures' participation in Spiderman merchandising, while at the same time, Sony Pictures purchased from us our participation in Spiderman films. This transaction will allow us to control and fully benefit from all Spiderman merchandising activity, while Sony will continue to produce and distribute Spiderman films. We won't be specific about the economics of this 2-way transaction, but we expect it will drive attractive returns for Disney.

Sony has the full rights now and always will. Marvel used to get a piece of the pie from ticket sales but it was a small piece.
Spider-Man is Sony forever it appears. Marvel sold their "participation" in the films for complete control of the film merchandising revenue. I'm hoping that "participation" means just the percentage of the box office they used to take and not their creative expertise. Sony always had final creative control but Marvel had a hand in developing how to use the character.

One thing is for sure, unless Amazing Spider-Man tanks and Sony looks to unload, Spider-Man will be at Sony forever and will NEVER appear in any Avengers film or cross-over movie.

At least Marvel/Disney has the animation rights to Spidey.

I hope Sony does sell back to disney, within the next 10 years.. they will have made enough on the franchise..

'Say, guys, let's be nice...I'm kinda sick of money, and those folks over at Disney sure could use another coat of wax on their sports cars...'

Yeah, count on it.

I don't think it's possible to make "enough" money. I doubt that if I had a billion dollar franchise I would say "Yeah, I've made enough money on this. I definitely don't want any more money, I think I'll sell this and let someone else make millions of dollars instead of me."

I wonder if the moment Marvel sold the rights to Spider-man they knew they'd never get the rights back.

Whoever wrote that contract for Marvel should've been shot.

If they hadn't done those film contracts with other studios they would have went bankrupt, and there sure as hell wouldn't be a Marvel Studios. It was a blessing for Marvel that film studios saw the bankability in their characters. It was something that had to be done in order to put Marvel in the position they are now with their own films.

So you're telling me they had to sell away the rights forever just to survive. They couldn't just sell those rights for 15 to 20 years and still have enough money to continue?

We don't know what the contracts state. We know that Sony and Fox have to keep making Marvel films to keep the license. So, that won't necessarily mean forever, or maybe it will? Who really knows? But, it doesn't matter. It was a great move in itself to contractually obligate film studios to make films of their characters. It's done so much for getting their characters out there in the mainstream and making Marvel money in the process to set themselves up in a great position. Marvel wasn't in a position to demand anything at that time. It was a decision in the short term that worked out great for them. To say it was a bad decision, you would have to forget that Marvel got themselves together as a company, formed their own movie studio, and were purchased by a big corporation like Disney which ensured security. So, you don't get some crossovers, big deal. What else it has allowed makes up for it, namely Marvel's very existence as a company.

What are some of you people talking about? The movie rights of spider-man go back to Disney in 2017. This was documented and made very clear about a year and a half ago or thereabouts.
It seems many of you are cynical about Marvel regaining what is rightfully theirs. Firstly, the whole point of the ironman, thor, hulk and cap movies were to serve as a vehicle for an avengers movie. If you don't like that, simples, don't watch them but just like a house is made for people to live in, these solo movies were leading up to tje avengers movie, so get over yourselves. Had we just got an avengers movie or solo movies of these characters with no central link to each other, you people would be complaining about the lack of development to link them together. Typical fanboys crying like bi**es about sh** they're still going to see.

Got a link to this story? Because I can't find anything.

Also, how can they go back to Disney when they never had them in the first place.

Edit: It's the game rights that go to 2017, not the movie rights: http://www.gamespot.com/news/activision-webs-up-spider-man-movie-rights-through--6140524

Disney own Marvel, therefore Disney run the show but yes you're right about the gaming business, had something to do with that Tim Rothwell fella. Argh, who cares? As long as the spidey movies are far better than Raimi's efforts then we should have fun times ahead.

i cant wait for this to happen...because it will. you cant like the old spiderman movies and call yourself a fan...when it came out i settled with it because i thought that i couldn't expect anything better...but know i see the movies marvel studios are making, they appreciate the already established story because it belongs to them and is still able to make the movie great for the people who don't know much about it...I want that for my #1 superhero...and i wont settle again...!!!!

disney owns the distributing rights to marvel...kevin feige made it clear many many times over that they have no hand in the actual production in the movie...they promote and distribute the movie when its done...they also shovel them money because they can do that...disney knows better than to disrupted the anal retentive fans needs and trust in marvel...

Disney owning Marvel is fantastic for several reasons. First and foremost, the Marvel brand will never ever ever die. Disney will keep creating a market for it and then pumping that market full of Marvel material to satisfy us fans. Secondly, it allows Marvel to broaden their horizons and will fully take advantage of Disney's massive worldwide appeal. They're also planning on adding a Marvel section to Disney World. All this happening, and Disney won't ever take creative control over anything at Marvel.

I remember when everyone was raging over Disney buying Marvel, I was glad and I still am.

To answer the original question:

Nothing would make me happier.

I don't like the hammy and hokey feel of Marvel Studio films, I never want them to have Spider-Man's film rights.

Yeah, we got enough of that in the Raimi films.

However I disagree with you on Incredible Hulk. That wasn't "hammy" at all.

Haven't seen TIH, I'll check it out. I have seen many clips from it, and have to agree with you. It is one that doesn't look hokey, but neither did the SM3 trailers, I'll take your word for it until I take a gander at it.

You haven't seen TIH yet? It's a pretty great movie. I thought it was better than most of the films in the MCU, which is why I was sad to see Edward Norton wasn't going to be in the Avengers. He was a really good Banner.
