So, we always seem to hear about what life is like for the crew aboard starships and such. But what is life like for civilians in the 24th century era Star Trek?

This is something I think needs to be explored in future movies or series. We sort of get a glimpse of a few clubs on Earth in STID and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, but overall it's generally a mystery.

Is it? I seem to remember a number of episodes (of TNG at least) where they stopped at a planet and we saw normal people. And wasn't DS9 mostly populated with civilians?

Well, we can make educated guesses.
There's no money, people do a job that they want to do and the object is to be better at what you do. There are no wars (although every movie is about one...), people have attained a higher consciousness (Picard is ok with being bald - which speaking of, they can cure cancer but not baldness...). Earth and Vulcan have basically created the Federation - although there's only one Vulcan per spaceship. People easily live over 100 years. I could extrapolate a lot more but, too lazy to go view all the movies.
