Rebecca Ferguson Takes the Lead in Sci-Fi Film Life

Nice to see it's getting good reviews, I only watched the first couple of trailer so am mostly spoiler free

WOW...

...after a marketing campaign that kept all the secrets, I just saw a TV spot showing [blackout]the alien crawling into Ryan Reynolds' mouth[/blackout]. That is one hell of a spoiler.

:down

At this point, I probably shouldn't be surprised about marketing departments over-tipping their hand, but... Yeah.

I quite enjoyed this movie.

Saw it today.

I was disappointed Calvin was just hungry. Hoped he would infect Reynolds as a host..

For writers of comedy, Wernick and Rhett has hit another home run with a screenplay that is nothing but entertaining. It's amazing to see them go from horror comedy to superhero comedy and now expand their range with a straight up horror that is not jump scare scary, visually terrifying. When people die, they die in the most gruesome way imaginable. Some are bloody, some are nightmarish, but all of them are frighteningly disturbing as hell. If gravity was the movie that didn’t convince you to not become an astronaut, Life is that nail in the coffin.

If you team Wernick and Rhett with Ryan Reynolds in a non-Deadpool movie, he’ll only be nothing but Deadpool to me. Everything that comes out of Reynold’s mouth in this isn’t something a Ryan Reynolds type would say, but something a Wade Wilson type would say. For a film like this, it’s nice to have Reynolds as the comic relief in a horrifying situation like this.

Based on the ending, if Sony really wanted to
they could retcon this into a Venom prequel

I saw it today, here's my ramblings...

This is a montage of a lot of these alien creature features. It's mostly part Alien, part the Thing, and part Europa Report (or Gravity) smashed together. It doesn't do anything new with the concept, but it's decent enough. Once you figure out the plot early on, you know exactly how it will turn out by the end. As for the actors they were as expected, so there's no one actor that outshines the rest. Overall, it's one of those movies you catch on tv during a Saturday afternoon and you're glad you saw it.
7/10

No they won't. And that's silly.

The creature is not a symbiote type of parasitic organism. After it grows, it's a fully-functioning carnivorous apex predator.

I give it a 6/10. Passable sci-fi creature feature with some decent acting and visuals. Writing and characters were a bit too flimsy and derivative for me.

I would say wait for Netflix or Redbox.

They wanted to make an Aunt May film at one point. Don't underestimate them on trying dumb things.

Yeah it's not gonna happen. I mean, they could have easily re-edit it to make it look like a [BLACKOUT]Vemon prequel[/BLACKOUT], but once you see [BLACKOUT]the actual organism[/BLACKOUT] you wouldn't think it's [BLACKOUT]a symbiote. [/BLACKOUT]

How about not everything out there is connected to comic book movies and comic book properties and maybe the Deadpool writers just pitched and sold an original sci-fi concept that has nothing to do with Venom or Marvel or Spider-Man? Trying to re-edit this into a Venom prequel at all is kind of silly.

This all started because the writers got asked a dumb question about it an interview and they laughed it off and were like, "Hahaha! Yeah, sure OK that's totally what it is."

You could arguably say this is is some sort Prometheus and Alien sequel if you really wanted. The creature is much closer to an Alien Xenomorph than it is a symbiote.

Well it is the trend now with 10 Cloverfield Lane and Split, it wouldn’t be above Sony to try to hop on that train. Once again it isn't the case with this movie, however that doesn't mean they weren't probably thinking about it.

Except 10 Cloverfield Lane has no connection to Cloverfield. It's a completely separate story. It's not a genuine sequel

I thought Abrams said that 10 Cloverfield Lane takes place in the same universe and on the same earth as the first Cloverfield film.

About this being a comic book prequel, isn't Sony only the distributor of this film? If so they can't do anything with this film except release it. They can't reedit it. They can't retcon it. And as it is it's not remotely a prequel for that comic book character. So this speculation about it becoming a prequel is just silly.

Yep Sony are only distributing this movie. They don't have a say on this. It's made by Skydance. Who also make Mission Impossible.

Just came back from this and loved it! I'll try to avoid spoilers but if I accidentally put any in, just let me know and I'll take those parts out.

It was a fairly derivative movie as far as the sci-fi horror genre tropes go, and a number of scenes did feel like they were practically out of the original Alien movie, but there hasn't been a sci-fi horror movie that's been done this well in a while.

It basically felt like an A-grade sci-fi horror movie with really well-done visual effects, top-quality sound editing & mixing (it was one of those movies that took full advantage of the movie theater's sound system), and solid acting. Although I wasn't really feeling the movie at first, once it went full "horror" with the alien creature it just became an intense thrill ride that didn't let up. Speaking of the alien creature, it was one of the most disgusting and vile alien lifeforms to have been put on film and still somehow had a sense of semi-believability to it and definitely left me wanting to know more about it. Once it fully emerged on screen, I couldn't help but be awed by it in a sense - serious kudos to whoever thought up the whole concept of its look and behavior. And if nothing else, this movie created an amazingly cool new alien lifeform that will go down in cinematic history, and I actually do hope to see it again in another movie because that would just be awesome.

It was obvious that a lot of effort went into the movie (especially liked all the details with respect to the zero gravity) and it definitely had high production values. I recommend seeing it on the biggest screen possible with the best sound system possible! And that ending, holy crap. Loved it, what a great way to end it. The most I can say without spoiling it is that I want a sequel stat!

And as a huge fan of sci-fi movies in general, this one is easily one of my modern favorites! Holy ***, I'm still reeling just thinking about it..... :)

It's pretty much a big budget B-movie, it felt like a modern day version of one of those sci-fi thrillers they would've made in the 50s or 60s. It was a fun ride, definitely. [
] Ryan Reynold's death though.....yeesh. Organs pulled out from the inside, bro....:csad:[

I lost the "what movie should we see?" battle and ended up seeing this this weekend. It was okay, definitely not as boring as I expected it to be. I give them props for that ballsy ending.

I really had a blast with this. Life was a solid, tense, well-acted, suspenseful even if somewhat by the books horror sci-fi thriller. It was nothing revolutionary by any means, but it didn't have to be. It was super fun time at the movies. I would give it a 7.5/10

"The Golden Globes are just like the Oscars, but without all that esteem. The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton, basically. A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker "

You can say for Life vs Alien.

5/10 because it's somekind of fast paced slasher movie in space. If you don't expect any smartness or depth you might have fun.

Really fun time with this one. Definitely had the 80s sci-fi horror genre. 8/10. Very nice pace too.

Saw this yesterday and really enjoyed it. Glad to see others did as well.

I saw this yesterday and enjoyed it for the most part, right up until that goofy, HIGHLY predictable ending (my friend and I both called it as soon as Gyllenhaal's character explained his plan). The overbearing music just made it more amusing. "Big budget B-movie" sounds about right. Still, it was well-acted and, as I said, mostly enjoyable.
