What is with Americas Fear of Sex

The issue of sex in America is a subject of some distress to me. It is often portrayed as naughty for people to talk about, or when it does show up it is portrayed as mainly ****ish. Women are portrayed as ****ty sex symbols but children (hell, even some adults) are not being taught about sex the way they should be.

Abstinence is a popular teaching method but not enough people are informed about protection methods. Shying away from the subject only makes young people want to experiment more. Unfortunately, since they are afraid of talking to their parents, they don't understand basic things involving safe sex, oral sex, etc.

Even on this site I am disturbed by things such as "the pull-out method always works for me!". I think education is the key to making sex a non-tabboo subject. For those mature and informed, sex can be a wonderful thing, it shouldn't always be portrayed as scandalous.

It does! :cmad:

I'm with you. Abstinence-only sex education is beyond stupid.

I think the main problem is that parents don't want to think about their children doing such things. Just as muc has someone doesn't want to think about their own parents doing it. Or our brothers and sisters. Or other family members.

Unless they're on to that kind of stuff

Key fact

I just did a study and it had something to do with AIDS sprinkled with Religion and @#$% Maybe if violence had long repercussions like childre:whatever:

I agree with this. It's completely ridiculous how abstinence is actually taught as a serious way of living life since how many people actually live this way?

More people claim to be molested than really are. Those that are usually don't report it.

What exactly are you trying to say, that there are just as many people who are molested that don't report it then those who do report it? You do realize that those who aren't molested and report it, make up a very small percentage, I believe less than %10, I think it's even less than %5...

Well, I guess the point is supposed to be that it's the ultimate form of birth control. However, abstinence is definitely a choice made by few. That's great for them, but people who do not choose it need to be fully educated on pregnancy and STD risks.

I'll even throw in a personal example: Before I became sexually active, I decided I wanted to go on birth control. I asked my parents about it and they said "maybe later" or something of the sort. Basically brushed me off. So, once I became sexually active I knew I couldn't just sit around waiting for them. I went on my own and got put on the pill and then informed my parents that I had started it and would like to please be covered by insurance for my prescription. My dad was most unhappy and basically called me a ho. My mother was more understanding. Regardless, I made my point.

Here's why I brought up that story: not many girls would have taken it upon themselves to get put on the pill after their parents said no. I do not believe that condoms are effective enough, so how many people out there are getting pregnant because of stubborn parents?! Scary stuff.

My best friend dump his girlfriend because she got on the pill and it made her crazy, month later they got back together when she got off the pill... True story...

Speaking as someone who has quite a few friends that are preggers, I think I can understand the parents' concern. :whatever:

She has many other options besides the pill, she should try the shot or the Nuavaring. Lots of people don't do well on the pill, too many side effects for some.

I'm saying that those statistics don't sound right. You're saying one in six men are molesters?

That's there buesiness, though it would be hysterical if I broke into a list of suggestions of birth control means when she was around :D

because parents are afraid that you're going to make the same mistake that they did and have a child.
and everyone knows that children ruin lives.:o

Saddly yes... I talk to a lot of different people and how many men brag about there sexual crusades, I know guys who just obsess about sex, it's not a big enough stetch for them to go too far in there crusade.

He a ***** is what he is :) Nah it really had more to do with college and what not, and I think he used that as an excuse.

but if she's on the pill that means he could totally get some :o
