What Movie Taught Hollywood the Biggest Lesson in 2009

  • Avatar: You have to spend money to make money

  • District 9: Then again, you don't have to spend all of it to make an effective sci-fi action flick

  • The Hangover: R-rated comedy starring mostly unknown but truly funny actors can lead to great things

  • The Hurt Locker: Iraq-themed movies work and work best with a female director handling the reins

  • Ice Age 3: Don't underestimate the power of the non-U.S. box-office(it made almost 700 mill WW)

  • Inglourious Basterds: QT and Harvey Weinstein are a lethal duo

  • Paranormal Activity: Actually, you don't have to spend any money at all, really

  • Precious: Sundance can still generate buzz

  • Sherlock Holmes: Never underestimate star power, even in Victorian garb

  • Star Trek: Truly fresh reboots can reignite a franchise, pulling in new and old fans alike

  • Taken: Liam Neeson is a viable action star

  • The Twilight Saga: New Moon: Vampire fever is only beginning

  • Up: Pixar always for-the-win

  • Zombieland: Indie actors vs. the undead = Fanboy delight

The Hangover for the reason listed.

They should have stoped after 2. Third one is an awful, AWFUL movie.

Even Terminator Salvation is batter than Terminator 3. At least for that it was worth.
Yes.

Avatar: 3D can be more than just a cheap gimmick, and can pull in the big bucks.

I think (500) Days of summer should be on here

(500) Days of Summer: Your expectations never align with you reality.

District 9 and Moon:

When a producer doesn't go all Rothman on the brightest young directors, you get freakin' masterpeices.

Transformers 2. People expected something other then immature potty humor from Bay?

yeah but what lesson did hollywood learn from that lol...

if anything it proves that crotchmans films make money thanks to hollywood input on filmmakers.

D-9 however...

Obviously Transformers 2: People will put up with anything, absolutely anything, if it means giant robots beating the s**t out of each other.

Dragonball Z and GI Joe

The message? Taking core material that a large quantity of fanboys care about, and churning out an absolute steaming pile of *****e from that material will be suitably punished with people telling you that you can shove your crap film up your ar$e.

Its a message that has been drilled into them countless times before which they never seem to learn...

bay could beg to differ, although I agree with you.

TF2 though rode a fair wave of hype due to Bay coming up with an overrated (in my opinion) first film that was at least able to really strike a chord with its target demographic.

Sequals will sell if you do something BIG with the first which people get behind... that same hype helped inflate Dark Knight's figures a little as well (although that was a FAR better movie).

The real test will be how well a third TF film sells now that Bay's lost a lot of that acclaim with the second one (not that the first had critics drooling for reasons other than the tech).

Couple on here I agree with, especially the Avatar/ D9 ones.

quite enjoyed the first, the second was the worst movie I've ever seen, no way on this earth will I watch the third movie.

Same here, I kinda enjoyed the first one for what it was.

But the second one is probably THE most irritating movie I have ever seen. It was like Michael Bay had a wet dream about big robots fighting, big explosions, tacky sexual innuendo's and hot women acting like slags when he was in his teens, then finally got the chance to make it a reality.

some people say 'well, what were you expecting?' I was expecting more than that DROSS and that was with me going in with low expectations. even on a 'leave your brain at the door' level, the movie was poor.

I had the same dream. Chances are you did too.

Thing is... we grew out of it... (well... most of it...)

That said... his target demographic may be those who are yet to have grown out of it.

Once again: You'll never go broke selling to the lowest common denominator...

I can imagine the target audience...

Bro 1: "Yo bro did you see that ****! It was awesome!"

Bro 2: "Yea bro that explosion was so bad ass!"

Bro 3: "No bro's, the best part was the robot with the wrecking ball testicles! Was totally sweeeet!"

Me: "DIE YOU SCUM!!!!"

IMO the movie that thought hollywood the biggest lesson is Twilight : New Moon. However not for the vampire craze.

It should be
The Twilight Saga: New Moon: Chick flicks can open to blockbuster levels

Edit :
As for the poll
Avatar: You have to spend money to make money
Tell that to movies like Troy , Alexander , Speed Racer ..pretty much every blockbuster with a mega budget that either underperformed or bombed financially. It should be Avatar: You have to spend money wisely to make money

District 9: Then again, you don't have to spend all of it to make an effective sci-fi action flick
Effectiveness depends on how you market movies and how those movies perform at the BO. D9 success was part due to PJ's name and part due to a very effective marketing campaign.

The Hangover: R-rated comedy starring mostly unknown but truly funny actors can lead to great things
Even if Hangover had expensive comedy actors , it's the setting and the chemistry between the actors that made it such a success. Although it's pretty hard to find someone as Zach Galifianakis.

The Hurt Locker: Iraq-themed movies work and work best with a female director handling the reins
No.

Ice Age 3: Don't underestimate the power of the non-U.S. box-office(it made almost 700 mill WW)
Really ??!!?
Hmm i thought Hollywood would've learned it's lesson with Potter ( aside from Azkaban each Potter movie has made more then 600 million in foreign markets)

Inglourious Basterds: QT and Harvey Weinstein are a lethal duo
Grindhouse flopping anyone....

Paranormal Activity: Actually, you don't have to spend any money at all, really
I agree

Precious: Sundance can still generate buzz
C'mon. Regardless of sundance , precious would've found an audience.

Sherlock Holmes: Never underestimate star power, even in Victorian garb
I agree

Star Trek: Truly fresh reboots can reignite a franchise, pulling in new and old fans alike
It's the words "Truly fresh " that matter here. Hence why i think Tron Legacy could be big

Taken: Liam Neeson is a viable action star
And here's me waiting for Taken 2

Up: Pixar always for-the-win
Didn't we know this already.
