this has probably been discussed, but what was that thing, that superman crashed into earth, at the beginning of the film???

LOL, that actually is a good question. IF Jor-El was so concerned about his son's safety, he could have at least provided his transportation with landing gear.

i think the cut scenes will probably explain that Kryptonite around the remains of Krypton would weaken supes. He was probably exhausted by the end of trip... resulting in a crash.

I also think the theatrical cut of the film would have flowed better, if we had seen Supes grow the ship. It would tie everything together.
