Child's Play (2019)

A hilarious and enjoyable update to a classic horror flick. They do a great job building up the story and being self aware about it helps a lot. The Andy in this movie is much older, but it works into their favor and the reason why he has Chucky makes sense. Aubrey Plaza does a great job playing the mom even though the resemblance between her and the kid who plays Andy is so far off. They do have an interesting mom-son relationship that does feel natural. Brian Tyree Henry was so great as always, they give him a lot to work with. I found Mark Hamill's voicework for Chucky a bit disappointing, but then again it's hard to be as great as Brad Dourif. As for the horror stuff, they know trying to be scary won't work in todays world, so they do make the kills playful and hilarious... and gory at the same time. Overall, while it's not as good as the original, this was a pretty solid update to the series.

Toy Story 4

They did it yet again. While the last film did a pretty damn good job tying a bow on a trilogy, this manages to go back to find a forgotten thread and tie it back to the grander story. Surprisingly, outside of Woody and Bo Peep, the original characters takes a literal backseat and what we is a more personal movie with new characters. There's probably no better example of an existential crisis than Tony Hale as Forky who is easily the crown jewel in this movie. Every time Forky is on screen, it's absolutely hysterical. The same also applies to Key & Peele as Ducky and Bunny who have a scene that steals the movie. Keanu Reeves was also a lot of fun when he shows up. The ending...while not as gut punching as Toy Story 3... does deliver a dramatic change to the series and it will be interesting to see what happens moving forward. Overall, it's damn near perfection.

Sexy. Fun. Cliche. Sexist. Violent. Bloody.

I glanced at the RT score and can't help but shake my head. It does not deserve that score. Of the recent female spy flicks like Atomic Blonde and Red Sparrow, I had a lot more fun watching this and this is the better movie as well. I felt like Atomic Blonde was ALMOST there, it never really hit John Wick levels or even surpassed that flick, but there was a sense of almost there. I feel like Luc Besson felt the same and made his own Atomic Blonde, and even if Atomic Blonde had better fights, this sure has a better story and actually made me care for the lead (Sasha Luss), even if her accent is awful, but I got use to her as it went along. . I sure as hell will rewatch this in a second over Atomic Blonde and RedSparrow.

I still am of the mindset of separating the art from the artist. This is not a bad movie at all. So it tells me that most critics just didn't want that on their heads, to each their own, but I do feel like them knives were already out for Besson, and they should be! But in the court of law. I can understand why most won't want to be neutral when it comes to that and that is their choice, just like it is mine to be unapologetic about enjoying the hell out of this.

Not really a spoiler, but there is also a kinda John Wick ''pencil'' moment, but with a different object.

I just wanted to add that this is the first time Cillian Murphy has made me laugh. I know he is a great actor and all that, but he just seems like he was having fun and it shows. That scene in the hotel! Lawd.

X-Men: First Class
(re-watch)

Carried by an all-around superb cast, stylish 60s setting and a story which delves into the characters' beliefs packaged as a political commentary. First Class truly is one of the great superhero movies because it never sidesteps drama and character development over spectacle. Fassbender, McAvoy, Lawrence and Hoult deliver terrific and moving performances. The political overtones did not feel contrived or served as mere lip service but was integral to the story and the character's arcs. Visually, Vaughn is successful presenting a 60s vibe fit for the film.

My only real gripe for this is Magneto's arc. While it is excellent, since his mother was murdered all he wanted was to kill Shaw. We never got to seem him feel for once that mutant and human coexisting is possible. Since this is an origin story that angle should have been tackled.
