The Best Horror of the Year - 2009 Vol. 1

Ugh, this is what passes for the best horror? I only liked two of the stories. Too bad my library only has both volumes of 2009.

American Vampire - Scott Snyder & Stephen King

Finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo yesterday morning. I think I'll read Into the Wild next.

Jeffrey Deaver - Carte Blanche (The new James Bond novel)
Peter David - Transformers Dark Of The Moon (novelization)

Changes by Jim Butcher. I refuse to buy the hardcovers so I'm a bit behind on the series. Really want to catch up on Side Jobs but have to wait.

Currently reading Pale Demon by Kim Harrison. I'm nearly done with it then it's onto Blackout by Rob Thurman.

Started and stopped reading Feed by Mira Grant.

I hate not finishing books, but I got sick of hearing about blogging on every other page.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson

If 'n Oof by Brian Chippendale

finally finished The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks tonight!

The Chronicles of the Last Emperor of Melnibone, Volume 2, Elric: To Rescue Tanelorn by Michael Moorcock.

Conan, eat your heart out.

Started on The Wolfman by Nicholas Pekearo again. It's a damn shame he was killed... this would've been one awesome series.

The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow.

Just finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I'm going to start up on the second book tomorrow.

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides

After reading his brilliant previous work, The Virgin Suicides, I didn't hesitant to read this and I'm glad that I did because this novel is nothing short of amazing. The novel is truly engrossing and beautifully written, it's quite simply a masterpiece.

Live and Let Die by Ian Fleming

Fleming further improved as an author with the second novel. With a tight story, great pacing together with Fleming's distinctive style makes this an enjoyable book.

Like several others, the last book I read was The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I loved the book's creepy atmosphere and found myself quite invested in the two protagonists. My only complaints about the book were that Larsson laid it on a little thick with the more lurid content ([blackout]I found myself asking, "Really? There's that much rape, incest and molestation in this small area we're looking at?[/blackout]), and that the part about [blackout]Wennerstrom[/blackout] near the end was a little long.

I also read True Grit recently, which is almost exactly like the Coen brothers film--meaning it's great.

The Hand of Chaos, volume 5 of the Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

The saga's villain-protagonist, Haplo, is tasked with visiting four of the Sundered Worlds. There he is to incite chaos, war, etcetera so that his master, Xar, can travel to each world and take over by ending the wars Haplo initiated.

During his travels he meets Alfred, one of his ancient enemies. After the Ancient World was destroyed, a group of powerful wizards known as the Sartan imprisoned the Patryns (like Haplo and Xar) in a realm called the Nexus. The Nexus unfortunately turned deadly, with dragons and other nasties springing up to threaten the imprisoned Patryns.

If you enjoyed the semi-twist to the Dark Tower saga, or magitek (we have the rune-magic utilized by the Patryn/Sartan, and mechanical magic used by many of the elves on the four worlds) worlds, you'll like this series.

If you enjoyed Dragonlance, I think you'll like this. If you were like me and was somewhat on the fence with Dragonlance, go ahead and give this one a try. I prefer it to Dragonlance thus far.
