  • I prefer shorter chapters, but I can read longer ones if there are enough page breaks.

I'm writing a story that I'm hoping to get published one day, and I want some feedback.

I can't give you a word count but I can't stand really long chapters. I would say 10-15 pages max because when you get to the 20+ page length to me it's like mowing a large field with a push mower and busting your butt just to look up and see you've gotten very little done. But at the same time I'm not a big fan of short chapters either. The Suicide Squad novelization has multiple chapters that are around 4-6 pages and it kinda feels like there is no rhythm to the book I guess you could say. I have to be honest and say that I'm not much of a reader. My goal for a few years now has been to read one book a month. The best I've done so far is 6 books in one year. I don't count comics/ trade paper backs or magazines. I hope this was of some help and good luck with your story.

I didn't vote as I'm not sure about what would be the best answer for me.

Thanks for your response.

Yeah, I guess page count is a better question. I edited my post.

Small chapters are great for people who can only read snippets at a time, so they can take frequent breaks. I think it depends on who your target audience is. It wouldn't surprise me to find younger readers like the quick, while older people like the long. :)

I generally like chapters to be no more than 20 pages long. This is enough to allow for a good amount of story development without becoming too bogged down in details. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, and I have occasionally enjoyed chapters that are slightly longer. However, I find that anything over 30 pages starts to feel excessive. Once a chapter gets too long, it becomes difficult to maintain focus and interest. As a result, I generally prefer shorter chapters that can be read in one sitting.

I think 20 pages per chapter is a good number, give or take.
