whats with Marvel's movie scores?

Same here! Though it was only used for 2 films (x2 and DOFp).

Maybe started with X2 but there were elements of it in the X3 theme as well

and which was the Winter Soldier theme?? I don't recall it

I actually think Jackman's score for 'The Winter Soldier' has been the best Marvel score in a while.

Totally agree. Jackman is the 2nd best film composer after Hans Zimmer, in my opinion, and his best work was X-Men : First Class.

Definitely. I'd put TWS first, followed by IM1/IM3, and The Avengers.

But for a single track, nothing in the entire MCU beats this.

I'm going to throw a raging temper tantrum if that theme isn't in Age of Ultron. It is to the Avengers what William's theme was for Superman, imo. Unforgettable.

If we are talking just Marvel studios, yeah Cap seems to be the only one with somewhat of a theme and it's kinda disappointing. Hopefully The Avengers theme is used again in AOU. I've liked the scores, but not on the same level I love Eflmans Spidey and Batman, or Williams Superman, X2 and DOFP are great largely because of how excited I got hearing the X2 theme again in DOFP. The First Avenger was great, and bits of Iron Man 3 really stuck with me. I need to re-listen to some of the scores again because I don't remember much of them.

I completely agree. I loved the theme in Avengers, and I'll never understand some people criticizing it as "too generic". I think it's right up there with Williams' Superman theme and Elfman's Batman theme. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't return in Age of Ultron. It does worry me that Brian Tyler is scoring it, since he replaced the previous themes in Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. To his credit, the new theme in Iron Man 3 was better than in the previous two films and the new theme in Thor: The Dark World was pretty good (though I prefer Patrick Doyle's theme from the first film). Worst case scenario, if he does come up with a new theme for Age of Ultron, it'll probably still sound good. It just won't be the same.

I've found all of the MCU scores to be pretty generic, tbh, Avengers included, though it worked well-enough for the movie. Captain America: TFA's was good and perfect for that period setting, IM3 had a decent theme, and TWS had a score well-suited to it's tone, but that's about it. None of them deserve to go down in history with the best superhero work of Williams, Elfman or Zimmer, imo.

Honestly, the only recent superhero score of the last 10 years outside of Zimmer's TDK trilogy that I found to be anything remotely special was Horner's TASM score. But thanks to the overall mixed and tepid reaction to the movie it belonged to, I guess it's just gonna have to be one of those overlooked/forgotten gems.

TBH, I don't think Marvel Studios puts a lot of importance on scores. They are a notoriously frugal company, and I think the score is one of those areas where they are perfectly fine with cutting financial corners. The biggest composer they've gotten was Alan Silvestri, who is a pretty big get, but come on, they could afford the biggest names in the business if they wanted to. Instead, they tend to go for these cheaper, synth-based guys from the video game world. Which is fine - they generally produce good, serviceable scores that work well with their films - they just aren't getting any instant classic scores out of them.

Top 10 Superhero Movie Musical Themes by WatchMojo.com

Looks a like a few MCU scores made the list.

10. Iron Man 3
8. Thor
5. The Avengers

Honorable Mention
Captain America:The Winter Soldier
Captain America:The First Avenger

Non-MCU Marvel scores that made the list.
4. X2
3. Spider-Man (2002)

While I agree that film themes in general aren't as frequent and iconic as the used to be (Batman '89, Superman, The Terminator, Predator, Star Wars, Robocop...Heck, pretty much ANY movie from the 80's) there are still plenty of recognizable and distinct modern scores. Danny Eflman's Spiderman theme, Hans Zimmer's Dark Knight and Man of Steel themes, Silverstri's Avengers theme, they absolutely do exist but they are not as frequent as they used to be in films.

They've been servicable but lacking. I actually really love the Avengers score though.

If we're talking about every movie based on Marvel's comic books (and not only MCU) then I suppose my favourite ones are original Spider-Man theme composed by Danny Elfman (guys, this track still gives me goosebumps when I'm listening to it) and Magneto theme from "X-Men: First Class" along with all its variations (like Frankenstein's Monster) - so fricking epic and thrilling!

That's the greatest piece of music in the MCU. Gosh darn goosebumps.

I'll be honest, I sort of did not like the Thor theme. I know I'm in the minority but for some reason it didn't do anything for me. I thought Cap had the best score out of all the phase 1 films, with Thor and the Hulk as my least favorite.

the new theme in Iron Man 3 was better than in the previous two films

I prefer driving with the top down.

Heck, the whole score fit Tony Stark to a T. I hated that they abandoned it in Iron Man 2. What a shame.

I agree completely. The only piece of music I would recognize is the Avengers theme, and that is the only good track on the Avengers album. The music in the MCU works, but it doesn't stand out at all.

The Iron Man 3 theme was pretty cool as well.

I actually liked a lot of the MCU's soundtracks, I gust recently bought the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack and I love it. But I also liked the Avengers and both of the Captain America's soundtracks too, especially the first one's. The first Captain America soundtrack reminded me a little bit of Indiana Jones soundtrack.

I wrote this in the spider-man score thread, but it applies here too
I think it's sad we'll never hear danny elfman's spider-man theme in the movies again, or Patrick Doyle's Thor theme, Silvestri's Cap theme (at least it seems as the consistent theme for cap), etc. (even Williams and Elfmans Bats and Supes themes in WB/DC). I think it would have been awesome to keep these going like James Bonds theme. Imagine if Bond movies had a new theme for the character every time we had a new actor? I love that they have kept it the same. Now with Marvel having everyone under their own roof they could do that and create these amazing iconic themes because every new film could stay in the same universe like Bond, but it seems like they don't care about that. Imagine if the new star wars ditched the old music?

For Thor I prefer the second one as it was a theme with more power behind it, better fitting the character and also the different tone of artistic design in the movie. If anything I would have liked that theme to be used more in the movie. I thought the first Thor had very good music as well, but it just doesn't fit as well for the visual changes made in TDW imo, and I think those changes were for the better.

I'm looking forward to see if Tyler expands upon it in AoU and Ragnarok, if he does the latter (seems plausible). He didn't have a ton of time to write the score for TDW as he replaced a previous composer.

I think most of the MCU scores have been good in particular The Avengers. But I really loved Brian Tylers Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 scores!!

I came up with a fan theme for Avengers: Age of Ultron inspired by Brian Tylers scores:

Let me know what you think :)

I'm quite fond of the scores for Iron Man 2, Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America Winter Soldier.

There are instances where the songs created with the same intended vibe sound almost identical to the temp music used. Over a long enough timeline – say, the last 20 years or so – it can result in rather dull movie scores that tend to feel like something you’ve already heard. Because you probably have.

People give Marvel a lot of slack for some lacklustre scores and say they aren't hum able but The Avengers Theme and the Iron Man 1 (Riding with the Top Down) and 3 (End Credits) are very hum able to me.
