whats with Marvel's movie scores?

It just annoys me the way they change the score for every movie. There are few things that can get the pulse racing in the cinema than hearing that familiar music again when the opening credits start. It also annoys me in the X-Men movies but when DOFP used the X2 music again I was grinning like an idiot.

I still don't understand why Civil War changed the score for TWS as the latter had a great score and CW had the same directors.

The scores for Thor, IM1 and TIH are still great though.

To be fair though, i dont think this is a Marvel exclusive problem though. I bet if that guy who made that youtube video went around asking people to hum the Nolan Batman movie themes they wouldnt be able to either, or Pirates of The Carribean...or the Raimi Spiderman theme...etc. I think that movie composition has changed so much over the last two decades where iconic themes are just not made anymore.

I did several musical score trivia contests, I think I got stumped by the same score from Gladiator twice.

Actually, anyone who's inclined to notice/remember themes and watched the PotC movies through could probably do a pretty good job of it. The main theme doesn't change much at all through the trilogy (just little flourishes here and there) and it's plenty catchy enough to be considered 'iconic' under the right circumstances. It just isn't supported by a big enough franchise to really take root in everyone's minds (basically what would've become of Williams' Star wars score if TESB and ROTJ had killed most public interest in the franchise instead of encouraging it).

I think a big problem is that these movies don't have big, awesome opening credit sequences anymore with the theme music to set the tone for the movie. They put the opening titles essentially at the end now.

Still I don't agree with all these videos before I think there is some inspired music to be found in these films.

Those movies you mention kept the same main themes throughout out their movies though. I knew them straight away when the credits fir the sequels started. The MCU changes their main themes for nearly every movie.

I don't know if it's that he wasn't available or wasn't up for it...but I mean, why not get Alan Silvestri back for Age of Ultron? I mean I would say he did the best job out of any of the composers for Marvel Studios. He created some great music for Captain America and we got actual scores and motifs for those films and Avengers. Why not bring him back for Age of Ultron?

Instead of Age of Ultron felt like this quasi-score that never really got going.

Agreed

I honestly can't remember which music they used for the Dark Knight, but the BB music is definitely different from the DKR music.

Regardless, the problem with the Nolan and Raimi trilogies is not necessarily exposure so much as quality. The Batman themes were some of Zimmer's absolute worst work and they barely even have any recognizable melody for one to remember. The Spiderman theme felt more like an experiment on Elfman's part (trying to break out of his comfort zone), and it was not a successful experiment (and again, barely even has a recognizable melody).

I think Elfmans Spider-Man score is iconic for sure. Watch the final scene at the cemetery from the first film. Powerful stuff.

It definitely stands out more than most cbm scores.

I agree with this. Opening sequences build excitement for the film, much like the Bond films with their theme songs. The same happened with TV shows which used to all have opening themes instead of cold openings with credits playing over it.

But that Marvel Symphonic Universe video also mentions temp tracks. So basically what is happening is that the score is being composed by non composers but by film editors who have had a temp score stuck in their heads and playing with a certain scene for over a year. And then they give it to the composers and tell them to imitate that instead of letting an actual composer look at the footage and write something appropriate.

It's completely the opposite of what John Williams did with ET and how Steven Spielberg then re-edited the bicycle flying sequence to fit the music instead of having his own temp track and then telling Williams to go and compose something similar.

The only memorable tracks for me in all of the MCU are The Avengers theme by Alan Silvestri, and Into Eternity by Brian Tyler.

My favourite is easily "Star Spangled Man" from Silvestri's score to "The First Avenger". It's just so damn catchy and flashy.

Brian Tyler slept through that soundtrack, in fact, I think him and Marvel must have had a falling out since they had to bring Danny Elfman in to finish it.

What was frustrating about the AoU soundtrack was that there were moments where Tyler would call back to prior themes he used but would only tease it. For example when Ironman suits up in the Hulkbuster, you hear his IM3 theme gear up...and then deflate. Dont do that man! That moment should have been epic! Give us the full theme. The music really let that moment down, and the movie as a whole.

For me, the Civil War score was essentially more of the same of the Zimmerish TWS, just without any of the key noise or sounds of the original.

Here's a great response video by Dan Golding, only this time he addresses film music as a whole. He also points out Hans Zimmer's style of composing (who deserves some of the blame, for why so much film music is so samesy), and how it's had such a huge influence on film music as of recently

Marvel Music: The Thematic Continuity Issue

THIS IS IT.
I couldnt agree with the other videos cus THIS is the real issue, i love Driving with the Top Down and i would kill for it to be the theme throught all the Iron Man movies. Hopefully Marvel takes notice of this.

Did someone make another video! LOL! This is like an epidemic now.

Cap's has had two great themes

THE FIRST AVENGER

The Winter Soldier
