Now that 3D movies has shown to be great (if you've seen Avatar in 3D), if James Cameron were to come out with his next movie, what kind of technological breakthrough do you think he will try to accomplish?

I'm crossing my fingers for smellivision. :oldrazz:

i think there is nothin more to add to the cinema. the sound is now for years in 3D. now its the video.

smellivision wouldnt work IMO.

I think the point where CGI/reality is absolutely, 100% indiscernible, in a heavily cgi-fied film would be the next "milestone". I know some films over the past decade have captured some truly awe-inspiring shots, and Avatar is probably the closest project to accomplishing this. But there are still "flaws" to be found.

I don't think it has been perfected yet.

PHOTOREAL CG humans . Even to this day that still remains the holy grail. Movies in the past have used CG humans for shots that would just be impossible to film ( like the stuff in spider-man movies) . However even to this day the quality ranges from obvious CG ( again spider-man) to near photorealism ( Dr Manhatten even thoigh he's blue and glowing and Col. Quaritch in Avatar during his final battle).

The next step would be just like with the Na'Vi , a fully realistic digital character that moves , talks and looks like a human

really?
neytiri holding jake in her arms, the human jake was one of the best CGI on this planet. to date. 100% photorealistic.

i am sorry but we will never know how a glowing forest looks like. never.

You know what would be cool.If that scene turned out to be a full CG shot.
Everybody would be like this -> :wow:

Cameron himself said that combining his version of mo-cap with live action shooting is tricky. It can be done but it's so complicated that they used it only on a couple of shots in Avatar . That's one of the things he's pondering on how to improve it because Batte Angel will be filmed that way.

Cameron said that there were some shots with humans and na'vi together and that they were the hardest to do. one of them is Quaritch and Jake in the final battle. you know the close up of them together.so i think
Neytiri and Jake (human)
is not a full CGI shot.

if it is then its over. i was shooooooooocked how good it looked.

That scene as well as the final scene had me chuckling a bit. I mean pretty much the whole movie you see the Na'vi interacting with each other so you don't get to see just how big they are.
But when Neytiri holds Jake close to her
all i kept thinking was "Man that's one big ass-head " :hehe:

Anyway going back to the original topic.
Guys like Cameron are no different then directors like Zemeckis , the wachowski's or even George Lucas in that they have a very specific vision of how their movies should be hence why they prefer to shoot their recent movies in their own way .
Control is what they all want and i think that's what is causing Cameron some difficulties with Battle Angel.
Combining mo-cap with live action shooting can be done. Look at what ILM did with POTC 2/3 , Iron Man etc. However the problem still remains that your shooting people on a set which means that you don't have total freedom with your camera. That is why Cameron had spent shooting nearly 15 months of mo-cap. By doing that he could instantly see how shot would look when he would change the camera angle.

Home 3D. They're already working on that tech now and its closer than you'd think...

As for the cinema... probably just making things sharper picture quality for the time being. Maybe even more work on 3D equipment, tighten that up, despite how big a leap forward Avatar has been...

I'm not really referring to the environments. I'm talking about the seamless blend between environments, characters, and objects...both real and fake. I don't think we're there yet.

Again, I haven't seen Avatar. But I've seen enough footage to see that while it's the most impressive to date, it is not perfected. Even the Na'vi themselves are a bit off-balance in some shots. Ney'tiri flexing her bow and arrow is incredibly realistic, and in others not so much. But this is to be expected when production runs for over 2 years. Some shots will just look better as a result of refined methods over the course of post-production. Cameron even noted how he wanted to re-do some shots but there just wasn't enough time.

i thought you meant that no shot is super realistic.

if you have the money and if you want to watch this move in 3D then do it. doesnt have to be IMAX. digital 3D will still be good enough. and belive me there are 3 shots in this movie where its just f.... up.

i dont know how sharper the avatar movie could be. it was IMO HD quality. it was 100% clean.

i think higher frame rate for theaters. a lot of people dont know this .but with a higher frame rate you also get a more sharper image. there are some people who think that with a higher frame rate you wouldnt need so big resolution for video quality. and its also good for fast moving action scenes. IMO there were some low rate artifacts in Avatar. but i think 90% will not notice them.

Virtual reality visors would probably be the next step. Then, when they perfect holographic technology we will have holographic films (this will be amazing...I hope Im alive when they make it)

I'd just scrolled down from the top of the page and type 'Full holographic movies' when I saw ^^^^.

I think we'll see that in the next 10-15 years.

I wont be happy until they can insert the viewer into the film. Once you can BE Batman and drive the Tumbler over to the set of your favorite porn, the desire for illegal drugs will disappear

A movie with a legitimate plot, good dialogue and solid acting.

CG Characters breaking past the uncanny valley effect is neat and possible but I dobut James Cameron would consider that a big challenge as a director.

I remember James Cameron saying that he didn't want the theatres to play 2nd fiddle to HD TV's and Home Theatre systems which is why he developed this stereoscoping 3D movie. To give audiences something they literally cannot get at home.

I think James Cameron would try to cook up a movie that would break another milestone in cinematic experience.

Again, I'm hoping for smellivision :P

^They have those at amusement park rides. They're...bleh. Nothing special. Holographs is where its at imo

Its sad that you dont know what technological means. :o

It's sad that some *****ebags can't take a joke.

Especially for raunchy comedies that use toilet humor such as farts, wouldn't you like to be able to smell Jack Black's odorous farts too?

"I think deep down people want to smell each other's farts." - Eddie Murphy

It's been done by John Waters. It was called "Polyester".
