When spoofs were good...

I enjoy the first 2 Scary Movies

so far apart from the scary movies the ones people have mentioned have all rocked yes that included men in tights and baseketball. men in tights lacked something due to when it was released there is no way brooks could have got away with the stuff he used to, sadly its the same for Dracula dead and loving it

i mean nelson+brooks was sure fire to win, but sadly censors and such put a stop to it. i mean there is no way in hell you'd get blazing saddles out today

Shoot 'Em Up was basically an action genre spoof, one of the best movies of last year.

Airplane
Spaceballs
Blazing Saddles
Naked Gun
Hot Hots
Scary Movie 1 and 2

Those to me are excellent spoof movies. The ones that we have today are horrible and made for the kiddies with ADD.

Its all about the talent behind the films.

They sell them as "From 2 of the writers from Scary Movie" and not "From Mel Brooks".

Are you actually comparing Robin Hood: Men In Tights, to the classics like The Naked Gun and Young Frankenstein?

Robin Hood: Men In Tights is as bad as the spoofs of today. Equally unfunny. Mel Brooks had lost it before Spaceballs.

definitely have to disagree with you there. the spoof movies of today suck immensely in comparison with robin hood men in tights imo.

true.

men in tights is a classic compared to the horror that is the scary movie franchise. mmm... young cary elwes. what went wrong? :csad:

Fair enough. Robin Hood: MIT is better than the crap of today, but it still can't be compared to the classics like The Naked Gun or Young Frankenstein. That was really the point of my post.

Mel Brooks had a nice run, with The Producers, Young Frankenstein, and to a degree Blazing Sadles, but Spaceballs, Robin Hood, Dracula, were just tired semi-funny films.

all in all it's your opinion. although robin hood didn't live up to a few other spoofs, i just don't feel that it could ever be compared to the likes of, let's say date movie. :(

idk if BASEketball would really count as a spoof movie

though, speaking of sport comedies, would the Major League movies count as spoofs ?

Wasn't it great back in the day when "parody" meant more than "introduce a well-known movie or tv show and crap and/or vomit on it?"

Loaded Weapon. Emilio Estevez AND Samual L Jackson!? Freakin' awesome!

The Lethal Weapon spoof? It was alright.

The problem with todays spoof movies isthat they are based on taking the soure material and making it look stupid. While the spoofs of yesterday were more of roasts than insults.

Plus...spoofs back then had a plot.

Holy Grail, Life of Brian, Meaning of Life:o

Holy Grail and Life of Brain are two of the funniest movies ever made but somehow I never think of them as being spoofs like Airplane or Hot Shots.

Robin Hood: Men In Tights was a fantastic Spoof Film - as are just about all of Brooks material.

As someone rightfully mentioned - Shoot 'Em Up was an incredible spoof of today's action "Shoot 'Em Up" movies. One of my favorites.

The Naked Gun series was all genius - I need to buy those sometime soon I feel.

I want to have decent hopes for the Superhero Spoof film.

Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead are 2 of the best spoofs in recent history

hot fuzz i think was the last one to come that i enjoyed

Too true.

And to be fair, Young Frankenstein owes its success and status as much to Gene Wilder as to Mel Brooks, if not more. The whole "Puttin' On The Ritz" sequence, for example, was completely Wilder's idea; Brooks was actually against putting that in, but at least he later had the good sense to admit he was wrong.

That, plus IMO it easily has the best cast of any Brooks movie.

Leslie Neilsen FTW

The Naked Gun films are pure gold

Spoofs today aren't really a whole lot worse than some of the older ones. The difference lies in timing and quality. Spoofs today deal a lot more with gross-out moments back-to-back with thrown-in, pop culture and quick visual gags for laughs. I think the closest to a really good spoof movie was the first Scary Movie, which was a lot bit more subtle (well, relatively speaking) than the recent spoofs we have been getting now and what a lot of the older movies tended to do.
