I cant remember a film to this scale get this much praise and popularity. Cant remember at all, maybe Spider-man 2, or The Lord of the Rings trilogy but I think this may beat it. Can you remember of a mainstream film like this get this much praise?

Wall-E. Can't find many people who didn't like it.

I remember a woman and her teenage daughter actually walked out of WALL-E because they dubbed it "boring." I guess they saw just the first half-hour of the film, but it was their loss.

And as for a film that got so much praise (and B.O. revenue) -- why isn't Titanic mentioned? Even though it wasn't as highly praised as the more recent blockbuster offerings, it had incredible word-of-mouth. I mean, for a film that grossed $600 million domestically... I doubt bad word-of-mouth would helped it.

Batman 89 got a lot of hype and praise when it came out. I remember long lines for that one but not as crazy as this...

same. and i saw that 42 times. it never really left the theater until October.

That was some of the best stuff in the movie.

A lot of folks didn't like Titanic, right off the bat. Then the backlash swelled the more the little girls swooned.

Even though there was a gay backlash against it, I think Silence of the Lambs was this kind of phenomenon, where it wasn't just a blockbuster but really entered the culture.

Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I wouldn't even bring up Spider-man 2 as praise worthy. It got recognition but the hype and praise for it were nothing like TDK has been receiving. Screw what you see on RT, I hear TDK everywhere. Spider-man 2 I heard from fans mainly.

Oh and Mama Mia was the worst piece of garbage I have ever seen in a movie it was THAT bad. Only Colin Firth was worth a damn....I was so wanting it to be better as I am a big ABBA fan...ugh

Back on topic (have to always utter my hatred for Mama Mia) LotR, King Kong, and oddly Brokeback Mountain were some of the few films in this decade to receive such praise.

not LOR. critics thought it was a spectacle and it was in terms of visuals. but the script was not original, and where it differed from the original work it was usually worse. IMO Fellowship was actually the best of the trilogy and the awards ROTK got were essentially for cumulative work rather than the groundbreaking impact of ROTK

honestly it's the Matrix. that flick is practically the movie that singlehanded built AICN.com and the reviewers were BLOWN away not only by the visual style but the message and technical aspects of the movie. people LOVED that movie and had never seen anything like it

for anyone under 25 the Matrix reference goes over your head but the thing about TDK is it's genre-breaking like the matrix. it's not just a comic book movie or an action movie but something that's just a great movie and something beyond anything you've seen before

Wall-e. got good reviews but is it even the best Pixar movie ever? Is it better than Nemo or the Incredibles even?

Iron Man was a good summer flick but it was good based on low expectations. no one expected it to be any good after Ghost Rider, FF2 and that crap. It's not a great movie, just something the studio expertly timed to release at a good slot on the calendar and something that turned out better than the crap that people were expecting. it was funnier than expected, looked better than expected, and it blew up arabs and terrorists... it basically delivered what people wanted for a summer flick so props for that but it isn't a movie people are going to look back at in 10 years and think it shaped the genre

I don't know, The Departed?

Spider-man 2 is up there

The Matrix was great but its not ranking in the money or the popularity this has, plus the Matrix was just another Original SciFi Movie like Blade Runner, this is a far superior written Sequel that lived up to the hype it formed.

I swore I already commented in this thread.

RETURN OF THE KING.

And on what planet was The Phantom Menace praised? It was universally hated by fans and critics alike.
