I loved the story myself. The whole father and son angle of the picture was quite touching, and tied into the themes presented in STM.

Overall I liked it, was too big on the ending (the island) or the kid angle, but I could deal with it. I don't think a lot of people would question or be pissed about him being back or wondering where he was, they'd just be grateful he's back and fighting for truth, justice and the american way.

Besides I thought Routh did a really good job, I wondered at times if he'd been watching the originals with Reeves, there seemed to be some mannerisms that were in there. Luthor was protrayed much better this time around, though his scheme seemed a little lame, but Spacey did a good job.

I'll igonore your poll, because I don't agree with the being forced to categorize the other films based on how YOU feel about them.
As for Superman Returns....I'll give it a "good". I didn't connect with the characters as much as I would have liked and it felt a little drawn out...but it wasn't bad by any stretch of the imagination. It definitely wasn't as good as Superman: The movie..maybe not even as good as Superman II, but it was definitely good.

He definitely seemed to be playing Reeve's Supes to me. Some would complain he didn't invent his own take, I guess, but I don't think you could ever top Reeve's version anyway...
